I was just talking to another fan about Goodbye Lullaby and he told me that "Not Enough" was originally going to be the lead single from the album before she was sent back to the studio to record pop songs. I always thought "Push" was meant to be the lead single, but after what he told me I'm really doubtful. I'm sure someone here will help me out clearing this rumor or confirming it.

I'd find Not Enough to be a really odd lead single choice honestly. I'd think Push or even Everybody Hurts wouldve been more obvious choices. Although I do remember reading way back then that Avril wanted to release Black Star as a single. Her reasoning was that it had "the same effect on my friends as Girlfriend did". So I guess if Black Star had a chance at being a single then truly any song did.

I do remember that same rumor being thrown around before. Push was supposed to be the second single. They let fans vote in a poll between Push and Smile as the 2nd single and Smile won. To my knowledge Everybody Hurts was never considered as a single, at least not for the lead single. There is probably no way of knowing what the original singles were meant to be unless Avril herself or producers involved with that album came out and said so. But I do believe Not Enough was at least one of the songs being considered as the lead single originally. It may not have been THE choice for lead single, but I have heard before that it was definitely considered, if not the original choice for the lead single. But again, these are all just rumors that I have heard circulated before. I don't think anyone really knows for sure.
Edit: I just looked back at my facts sheets to see if I could find anything about this. A member on the old site named Il'ya was the one who told me about it. It says:

I've got an ignorant question: Why do they release singles? What's the big deal, music bizz wise?

Push would've been awful purely because her voice sounds horrific in the chorus. Everybody hurts maybe but it's a little boring. I actually think Not Enough would've been quite good, it's more "her". Dunno why black star is even on the album let alone considered for release - let's not let her girl pals have any input in future please Avril

I've got an ignorant question: Why do they release singles? What's the big deal, music bizz wise? They send them to radio for air play and have done so for literally decades. It basically gives them a way to promote the album by playing a few of the best songs so that people will want to buy the whole album. Push would've been awful purely because her voice sounds horrific in the chorus. Everybody hurts maybe but it's a little boring. I actually think Not Enough would've been quite good, it's more "her". Dunno why black star is even on the album let alone considered for release - let's not let her girl pals have any input in future please Avril I agree. I think both songs would have flopped as singles because neither are very radio friendly or commercial sounding. Not Enough is actually one of the better written songs IMO and has more modern sounding production. It could have done alright on the charts maybe but honestly GL had nothing hit or single worthy on it. I think any song they picked would have failed but at least it also would have represented the album better.

I actually heard "Not Enough" a few times in the background of some German tv shows. That's quite something - since after TBDT Avril is hardly known here anymore, yet this one non-single is used in tv shows. Anyway, I don't know if "Not Enough" was originally really supposed to be GL's lead single, but I would have loved it to. It's one of the most interesting songs on GL, with that wonderful piano. The lyrics are quite good as well and the drums are probably the best of all GL's songs. Plus it's the most radio-friendly song among those that represent GL best. About Black Star: I think I remember Avril describing it as some kind of intro. Back then she was the only artist I'd really listen to, so I'd never heard an other intro song before. By now, however, I've heard some real intro songs. They're supposed to introduce you to the album (obvs.) . I can't really see how "Black Star" does that. It doesn't even really have a theme. I'm not even sure what or if it actually has anything to do with GL... (Don't get me wrong, I still think it's kinda cute and although I hardly ever listen to it I'm kinda glad we do have it on GL )

Yep she's not super relevant in America anymore either but a few years ago they used YASNY in the background of a contestant's audition on American Idol, which was super surprising.
I think Black Star works as an intro to GL if WTH didn't follow immediately after it. I do think Black Star sets up the general theme and sound of GL, since it sounds very much like a lullaby and is soft, like the rest of the album is. But the vibe it sets up is instantly ruined as soon as WTH comes on. That's the only problem with it IMO.

I've read that NE should be the lead because she discribed the original lead skngle and it sounded like NE. I don't think BS would've been a single I mean when does she have a full lenght song of it?

Technically, Alice was the start of it. But the lead prior to WTH was going to be Black Star which she turned into a full song apparently.

Well singles were to drive up record sales plan and simple. Before this internet we would hear songs played on the radio and then buy the single song. So one group at one time i liked i had 3 singles and the album that had the same songs on it. Like i said drive up sales, singles were out before the album, then you end up with a album of songs you don't listen too. Some people like all the songs from someone and i am not like that. I also like how some come out with a album of the same songs but done different, like electric versus acoustic guitar or a song that had a certain beat is speed up and such. Its called ballooning sales.

I've been to GL album launch showcase, the song list was in order with What The Hell, Girlfriend, Wish You Were Here, Push and Smile. she probably wanted to highlight those songs by performing in the debut show. So they could possibly be the singles order and choices... But anything before the list, I dunno... And I've never heard anything about the song mentioned, even in the commentary video...
However, NE does soun like a single to me, its more pop driven than the other songs with consistant concept. WYWH sounds obvious too when I first listen. Others except WTH and Smile... No...

NE was for sure a single contender. Love that song.
