Not a question: If those Japanese kids can't speak English then I'm surprised they can sing it. 🤔 I'm a Malaysian and English is my second language. I can speak English fluently, IF, there's a text for me to read. To speak spontaneously, I will struggle a lil bit with the grammar.

lol at Avril struggling with German but while listening to the various versions of Girlfriend it seems like she was struggling with every single language. You have to have at least some minimal knowledge of a language if you want to sound at least understandable while singing. You can have the words written down how they are read but that still won't help you if you can't pronounce the German "ch" or the Italian rolled "r". She did sing in those languages but she didn't pronounce most of the words right. In some songs you can't even hear Taka's accent, but that because his English is pretty decent, while Avril at that time didn't know any of those languages. If she had to record the French version now, it would sounds like French and not gibberish.

I've watched a couple of interviews in English of Taka, and his English is pretty good... I don't know about the other band members, but he's good!

Exactly my point. Why didn't Taka speak english in the interview with Avril? (Statement, not a question). He might have been nervous and shy... If I were in the same room with Avril, and I had to interview her, I'd probably mumble some incoherent words, even if my first language is English ahah Besides, I think that show was a Japanese one, therefore the viewers were all Japanese, and there was a translator for her. I think they all understood her (maybe not everything she said), but they might have felt safer with a translator.

I still give her a lot of credit for doing it though. Of course she isn't going to sound as good as people who speak it natively. It was just something she wanted to do for her international fans, as a way of giving back. I think it's great she wanted to do that.

When I was about ten years old, I used to wonder if Avril had actually sung that German part in the German version of GF herself. I thought they might have used a singer who could speak German and changed her voice to sound like Avril's. Anyway, it's really great that Avril recorded GF in various languages. And I think Avril's pronounciation in the German version is surprisingly good for someone who doesn't speak German at all. The spanish version of Girlfriend makes me want to laugh. Her pronunciation is so bad 😶 really? I had Spanish in school for several years, and I just listened to the Spanish version of GF and I think her pronounciation is pretty good. But maybe we just didn't learn it properly in school, just like English (many of my English teachers were really )...

Moderators note: Let's keep this thread to talk about "Listen". For languages in Avrils vocabulary or any version of Girlfriend - please either make a new thread or continue in the Random Avril Discussion thread.

It's a nice song. Maybe I'm biased but it definitely sounds weird without Avril. Why they didn't release the same goddamn version internationally, I don't know. I *cough* downloaded the audio from YouTube and I can listen to the Avril version whenever I want, but the question remains. Are we to deduce that One OK Rock are a bigger deal than Avril internationally?

Are we to deduce that One OK Rock are a bigger deal than Avril internationally? I think their collaboration was never planned like the one with 5SOS, which are released in both versions. She wanted to sing on one of their songs, because she had heard them live, and she really liked them, but I guess the album was already done at the moment, so they added her on the Japanese version only, which helped them in terms of sales, since their new sound is pretty far from their original one... I think they never thought it could have such a great success, it can happen. I don't think they've ever foreseen the great success of "Complicated" nor of "Girlfriend". I don't think they're a bigger deal internationally. They relied on 5Sos and the other guy from All Time Low I guess, as support for their international album, but none of those two collaborations have received such a great support and success like their collaboration with Avril. 5Sos are pretty big among teens, so it should have been Huge, but it didn't happen... I guess Avril's collaboration was so successful because we haven't heard of a new song in ages, and with her new album announcement and the collaboration, it all built up the hype again, even from some nostalgic fans, making it a great success... and they didn't/couldn't see it coming

I'll never understand why it was a Japan exclusive either. The only reason I can think of is that sometimes artists can't release songs with other artists due to contracts. The label that ONE OK ROCK uses in the US is Fueled by Ramen. We don't know what Avril's label situation is, but it seems she may still be with Sony, regardless of whatever the label issue is. I believe her music in Japan is distributed through Sony Japan. Maybe there was some kind of contractual breach with her labels in the US that prohibited her from being able to release the song in the US market.

It could be... even though 5SOS are signed to Capitol Records, and All Time Low are signed to Hopeless Records (which is an independent label), and One Ok Rock aren't signed to Sony Japan, they're signed to a Japanese record label, and Avril appears on the album via Epic, because when she recorded it, she was still signed to them... I don't know.

It's all about the distribution rights, right?
(Not a question) 👌🏼
