We all discuss popular artists with each other, all of which have varying degrees of popularity. Although I feel as though there's never much discussion on more obscure artists which I guess would make sense since most haven't heard of them. So I'm interested in hearing what unknown singers you listen to and how you heard of them. Feel free to post a song or two of theirs as well! The most obscure singer I listen to is probably Annette Ducharme, also known as Anet. She's a pop-rock singer that has released five solid albums between the years of 1989-2003, my favorite being 2003's Talented Girl. Although after 2003, she practically disappeared completely. I read on some site that she's now an opera singer in Canada which was pretty surprising to me. I first heard of her when her song Nicotine was played in the 2003 film Thirteen. The song stuck out to me and I decided to listen to the rest of her work which I was very pleasantly surprised by. Here's the song Nicotine:

Do bands count, genre notwithstanding? Because I listen to so many "obscure" bands, at least by Bandaids standards. Ever heard of Strapping Young Lad, Superjoint Ritual and Dying Fetus? Nope didn't think so. Part of me now regrets deleting my Metal thread, even if it was the same three people talking to themselves.

Ah, Dying Fetus, i'm not a fan of them, but i do know them. But indeed, for Bandaids standards it sure is an obscure band. But that's logical, since it's not really a metal community here. My most obscure artist is probably Swans, although they're not really that obscure from a "popularity" point of view. Within their music genre they're one of the bigger players. But it's mostly the sound that makes them obscure i think, because it's just such a massive wall of noise sometimes. They recently had a show in the Netherlands, and the venue they played at urged people to bring ear protection, because their shows are mostly just below the pain level. . The lead singer, Micheal Gira, was (at the beginning of their career at least) also notorious for spitting at the audience, and kicking on the hands of anyone who laid theirs on the edge of the stage.

When I was younger, there was an Estonian girlband around, Vanilla Ninja. To this day I still love some of their songs, but they're not really releasing music anymore. I'm a country fan and I grew up listening to Little Big Town as well, who were not that known until Girl Crush happened and Lzzy Hale covered it. Then there is a bunch of 80s hair metal bands which weren't played much, and which aren't really known about know, like Thunder, Dokken... many hairbands had hits like Def Leppard or Bon Jovi but Thunder were never appreciated enough. Tesla had hits but people didn't even know they were Tesla. But yeah, I do think that of all the bands I listened to in my life, Vanilla Ninja are the most "obscure".

I'm not sure any of the "obscure" artists I like can really be considered so because of how they became known, but I guess you could say they are lesser known or less mainstream. I listen to many many artists from shows like American Idol and The Voice. So they essentially became known through a mainstream TV show but unless you watch the show, you probably would have still never heard of them. And many of the artists who go on shows like this were working musicians before that released albums long before they went on the show, so I guess that kind of makes them "obscure" in the sense they were working as a musician and releasing music before becoming famous. Some lesser known artists I like are: Jack & White, a folk duo featuring American Idol season 7 alum Brooke White. They release everything on an independent label. If you enjoy '60s and '70s inspired pop and rock music, check them out. Midas Whale, another folk duo featuring American Idol season 3 alum Jon Peter Lewis. The duo came together specifically to audition for season 4 of The Voice US in 2013. They advanced as far as the knockout rounds and never made it to the live shows, but they have released an album through Kickstarter. Again, if you like '60s and '70s inspired pop, folk, rock music, I recommend checking them out. As mentioned above, Jon Peter Lewis. He's released all of his music on his own label. He is a pretty basic pop/rock singer, like AC kind of stuff I guess. Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. - I think I discovered them because one of their songs was the iTunes free single of the week, in fact that's how I've discovered quite a few songs that I have in my playlist. I can best describe them as alternative or alternative pop. AURA - Discovered her because a few of her songs were featured in an unauthorized documentary about Avril (I think it was the Skater Girl one). I just have 1 CD of hers but I really only like a few songs on it. Il Volo - An Italian operatic pop trio made up of 3 teen (now young adult) singers who originally auditioned for some Italian TV show. Similar to One Direction, some producer took the 3 men and put them together in a group. I discovered them because they were the guest singers on a results episode of Idol back in 2011. They do all opera or operatic pop and classical music, like O Sole Mio and opera takes on mainstream songs like "Beautiful Day" by U2 and "I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing" by Aerosmith. They are incredibly talented singers, especially for being so young. Even if you aren't super into opera or classical music (hell, I'm not) I recommend checking them out, especially one of their live performances. Just absolutely incredible vocalists, they are flawless, pitch perfect singers. Last one I would say I guess is Dalton Rapattoni, who I'm sure you guys have heard me mention before He came in third this year on the final season of Idol, but he was an independent musician before that. He released 3 EPs with his band Fly Away Hero independently before he went on Idol. He was briefly in a Disney boyband but the band was never signed or released an album. Then he did Idol and is now recording a debut album that he will release independently next year. He reminds me of a male Avril, pop/rock/alternative, but his newer stuff I would say is more alternative or alternative pop. In general though, like I said, I don't think any of the stuff I listen to can truly be considered "obscure." I'm not one of those people who really goes seeking out that kind of thing or is like "Yeah I liked this before it was cool."

I listen to a band called Lake Street Dive - they're a soul, jazz and indie pop band They're incredibly talented and I love them, they did a tour in the UK and I could of gone for my 18th birthday actually Not many people know them which is a shame, they're very much a hidden gem Their lead singer- Rachel Price, has amazing vocals.

My most love obscure artist is Omar Rodríguez-López, a really brilliant musician, who I mostly know from the bands he was part of: The Mars Volta, At The Drive In, Antemasque.

I'm listening to some artists that aren't as famous as the main pop, rock and pop-rock acts. But obscure is the wrong word for them.
I totally love Krystal Meyers. She makes Christian pop-rock, pop, rock and pop-punk and some dance like songs.

@harvey, why you deleted your thread? I'm with BogoGog24, not "obscure" but lesser known or less mainstream. Some groups i discovered from youtube recomendations or reviews in blogs and i still listen to. The Lisps (indie rock, ny), Metric (indie rock, canada), Eternal dream (metal, spain). But i think all the groups i listen can be known by someone. Even more thinking of music lovers like us. So i can't list really obscure artists only known by me.

There's a german band making covers of popular rock/metal/pop hits called Mandowar. Thanks to Spotify i've discovered some of their covers a few months ago. They have really fun covers to listen tbh.

I knew there was a reason for coming back to check on BA! Quite a strange thread on an Avril forum, I could name a lot of bands like @harvey mentioned (Strapping Young Lad etc) and like @mercedes said Thunder etc but they're not "obscure" if you're into that kind of thing. Well I'll try for a few that people here might not know: Sister Irene O'Connor (basically an old nun from the 70's (ish?) who got her hands on a drum machine and a keyboard and made music) I listen to a few avante-garde artists like Dimanada Galas (she did an album with John Paul Jones of Led Zep so she's probably not that obscure, again if you're into that kind of thing) Klaus Nomi? Bitter Ruin (relatively unknown duo from England but easily one of my fave bands ever) Zaz (I don't know how well known she is in France, but am guessing she probably more obscure in English speaking countries) .....I could go on for ages Oh, I'm also a huge fan of both Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart who are kind of obscure giants in music? If you research modern music you'll be bound to stumble into them at some point being referenced by someone but they're very rarely on radio/MTV (or whatever the kids are listening to these days). Zappa was one of the people who helped get the "explicit lyric" sticker on albums so they wouldn't be banned/edited, he actually got an explicit lyric sticker on one of his instrumental albums lol)

Gjan isn't the most obscure artist ever but she definitely isn't extremely popular outside Lithuania, she has about 8 songs out now and I can't fault any of them, they're all great
