Lavigne's new album exceeds expectations
Natalie Dowdy
Avril Lavigne recently released her sixth album “Head Above Water” after a gap of almost six years since her previous album.
“Head Above Water” contains twelve relatively short tracks and it’s named after one of the most popular songs on the album “Head Above Water,” which came out prior to the release. This song has a music video and has gained much popularity since the release in September.
“Head Above Water” is a refreshingly nostalgic comeback for the artist. The album cover shows Avril holding an acoustic guitar, which directly correlates to the songs “It Was Me,” “Souvenir,” “Goddess” and “Warrior,” which are the slower acoustic tracks of the album.
One of the best songs on the album in my opinion is “Tell me It’s Over.” This is a classic breakup song displaying lyrics such as “Tell me it’s over / if it’s really over / ‘Cause it don’t feel like it’s over whenever you’re closing the door.” This song also has a music video which fits well with the song lyrics because it’s a video about a classic breakup.
In contrast, the song “Crush” is about love and having a crush. Lavigne sings cliché love song lyrics such as, “It's just the way you are / the way that you walk / the way that you talk, the way that you read me, baby.” Although the lyrics are cliché, it’s a catchy beat and provides a playful vibe.
Another song worth mentioning is “Bigger Wow,” which is more of an upbeat feel-good song and deserves more attention than it’s receiving. Lavigne sings the high energy lyrics “I just want a bigger wow / I'm not complaining / If you throw me up, I won't come down.” Although most of the songs on the album are slower paced, they all do a good job of showing her vocal range.
“Love Me Insane” and “I Fell in Love With the Devil” are two of the songs on the album that show the wide vocal range Lavigne is capable of, as well as containing catchy melodies.
However, the song “Dumb Blonde,” featuring Nicki Minaj, completely disagrees with the theme and sound of the other songs. It’s safe to say I was disappointed in this track. Lavigne sings cringey lyrics like “I ain't no dumb blonde / I ain't no stupid Barbie doll / I got my game on, watch me prove you wrong.” This might be the worst song I’ve heard from her since “Hello Kitty.”
In addition to this, Nicki Minaj's rap towards the end of the song seems out of place and makes it look like Lavigne is trying to be something she’s not. The simplistic message behind the song is revealed when Lavigne writes in a series of Instagram posts, “We wrote ‘Dumb Blonde’ as an anthem for anyone who has been stereotyped or talked down to. Keep your confidence and don't let anyone tell you how to be.” Although this message is good, I would’ve liked to see Lavigne stick to her original sound.
I would’ve also liked to see more upbeat feel-good songs on the album but enjoyed the acoustic style songs too. Lavigne's new album exceeds expectations and has a good sound.
The views expressed are those of the writer and not necessarily those of The Torch.
