Since my first language isn't English, I know my bad. Something I usually struggle different phrases, especially I still don't get the concept of using up/down/in/on/away/out. By putting a verb in front of them which turns out a totally different mean, some even not relavent to their nature of meaning. Can someone recommend me a way of learning those like website, books and stuffs. Thanks a lot

Well, you just have to learn them by heart. If I were you, I would study the most common phrasal verbs in our language. I'm sure you can find them on Cambridge's English Phrasal Verbs in Use.

Since my first language isn't English either, I would recommend to "learn" by using everything you can. That helped me a lot. I actually mean reading, watching movies (sub or not), listening to music (r eal listening) and of course writing in forums/internet! No one ever made fun of me because I mistyped a work or used a totally wrong word. Eg on here, people rather help you than blame you for something you simply can't know. Those "tricks" worked really fine for me so far, that's why I felt I should tell you

Hats off to you all

Hats off to you all American global geopolitical victory in the 90s caused a massive wave of American culture hitting the rest of the world, and us kids got to drink it all up like Kool-aid (check origin of this phrase if you don't know it yet, horrific!). For example here in former Yugoslavia, TV rolled a heckin' ton of American stuff - endless made-for-TV dramas, shows like Ricky Lake, Jerry Springer, Oprah, and for cartoons we had Cartoon Network and later on Nickelodeon, those things didn't even have subtitles! In schools though, we still learn Ye Good Olde Bri'ish English, so as a consequence, we're exposed to English variants from both sides of the pond. I myself am the biggest fan of more southern American accents, they flow so nicely, and they have some interesting phrases, like " y'all just hop on in!", which is a relevant artefact for this thread speaking of these word combinations .

I went and stayed with a German family when I was 18 in about 1997 and went to school with them to English class and their English was better than mine.
