Complicated 10/10 Girlfriend 10/10 Don’t Tell Me 9/10 What The Hell 9/10 Bite Me 8/10 Head Above Water 8/10 HTNGU 5/10
It's fun that my 1st single rankings someway follow also how much I liked their eras.
AL5 era was the one I disliked the most, too dark for me, too delays between 1st single and album, first time she didn't tour in Europe.. I didn't like Chad, her friendship with Manson, I don't like the cover.. the whole era was a bit too dark for me - and I like dark things in a sense, just I don't know, there are awesome gems in the album but also the songs I like a lot for example "Give you with You like" and "Hello Heartache" give me dark vibes when I hear them, don't know why
AL6 HAW was very good, just I honestly didn't like the record too much, I mean I love the first part but from souvenir to warrior it's all pretty forgettable to me.

I would say that besides GF, Complicated, Bite Me and HAW being 10/10 for me I would put Don't Tell Me at 9/10. HTNGU and WTH at like 7 or so even though I enjoyed them at the time.

I think Rock & Roll should have been the lead single for Self-titled album as its better than HTNGU. Can u guys imagine if Avril was allowed to re-record her masters and give WTH, HTNGU, RNR the electric guitars and live drums treatment that it deserve? haha Also, whatever happen to It Was In Me to be release as a single from HAW?

I kinda love GYWYL. Sort of expanded her discography with new genres. I am waiting for an album where Avril gets to do more of that sort of folk pop thing

Followed the same path of Dumb Blonde, or even worse, for Dumb Blonde they had filmed a video with Hannah Lux Davis, for It Was in Me not even that. Just scrapped- She had announced it as next single in a radio interview, then we didn't know anything else.

The whole Dumb Blonde/It Was In Me which-should-be-a-single is such a mess and its no wonder she gave up on the era halfway since her HAW tour was cancelled due to pandemic. Dumb Blonde is basically a sonic oddity in her HAW album. HAW is suppose to be her mature dark album and all it took was just one song to spoil the whole mood of the album. Urgh

Yeah I think a lot of her discography would have turned out different if she didn't have label interference and those songs could have been so much better! I always thought the live version of 17 was miles better than the one we got on the album.
I also like the GYWYL sound and it suited her voice. It is a pity about Dumb Blonde could've been a hit. It Was In Me could've been nostalgic had it been given single treatment.

But then again, she was under aBMG records at that time and I got a feeling the label ain't pumping money to make a music video without a single release.

ok, if you started the trend, here i go:
1. Head Above Water - 10/10 (very powerful comeback song, meaningful lyrics, great instrumentation, just epic)
2. Girlfriend - 9/10 (i know a lot of ppl hate it BUT looking back in time it was just epic, funny, memorable and overall a great impact in the industry)
3. Don't Tell Me - 8.5/10 (another underrated track. sure MHE was better for a lead, but the song is amazing imo, as a lead is a bit weak yes)
4. What The Hell - 8.5/10 (i know a lot of ppl hate this one too, it's one of her most poppy songs, but it's very catchy imo with a great chorus)
5. Complicated - 8/10 (it's iconic yes, but to me it's a bit overrated in terms of musical quality)
6. Bite Me - 7/10 (i have a really hard time connecting to this one, i just think it's because it doesn't have anything "special", it's just a good track)
7. HTNGU - 7/10 (it was't as bad, you could hear some LG influences in this one and it's overall catchy, just not her best work)

Oh I like this trend. I'll judge them as singles and not how much I particularly like them. The grades will be arbitrary tho, but not the order.
Girlfriend 10/10. It's not even my favorite song on the album, and I've been tired of it since 2007, but it was lightning in a bottle. Such an incredible beginning to that album.
HAW 9.5/10. Again, not even on my top 3 of that album, I'm not a believer, but wow was it incredible beginning to the era and the album. One of the best songs she has ever done. I wish she would have just go order with the rest if the singles tho, Birdie and IWIM could have been key singles.
Complicated 9/10. Iconic for sure, but I think Sk8er Boi would have worked just as fine as first single for LG, although Complicated represents it better.
Bite Me 8/10. Amazing reminder of Avril sound. One of the best punkier-upbeat songs she has done. In a month we will know if it was the best option as first single.
Don't Tell Me 7.5/10. I love this song, I understand why it was chosen as first single but... MHE and TMA I think are more powerful to showcase that album.
HTNGU 7/10. I like what she tried to do and the callback to LG/Complicated. The production of the song tho... if they aimed to modernize her old sound they failed to both be modern an to her old sound. That production... Also, I prefer RnR and 17, so this one doesn't add anything new once you hear the rest of the album. LMG, both HH, GYWYL, Bad Girl and even 17 were the songs I would have chosen to represent the album.
WTH 6/10. It's not a bad song, I actually would like it in a powerpop/synth album. I would even say its one of the most "profesional" songs in GL. However, it was a terrible choice for that album. And she torpedoed it to the ground with all the "this song does not represent the album, I've been forced". I expent more time waiting for the true songs of GL than enjoying that one. Not Enough was the option in my opinion, with Push, SST and EH as contenders. It wouldn't have made the album succesful, but at least it would hace stayed true to itself.

The singles for the HAW era shouldve been: Head Above Water - Birdie - It Was In Me - Warrior (Covid-19 charity single).
Just think what a slay videos for Birdie and It Was In Me would've been...
