Bite Me is being played quite often at my local radio station which only plays the hits. The last time I heard an Avril song being played there was HTNGU so it is pretty big deal. Seems like everyone is starting to recognise her "comeback"!!!

For me nothing will ever beat Complicated and Girlfriend as her best singles, but I think Bite Me is also a good effort and return to form after so many years of forced pop hits and then trying a more mature sound with HAW. I like HAW for its message and her trying to be more adult with her sound, but it's not a song I go back to as often. I think you have to be in a certain mood for it. Don't Tell Me is good but MHE would have made a better single. I like HTNGU and WTH but the forced pop sound doesn't really work for her and what she wanted to do for those albums.

1. What The Hell (It's a banger from start to finish - I know it wasn't "Right" for GL but it's still an absolute bop) 2. Bite Me (Lots of news outlets are saying this is 'Classic' Avril but to me this sounds more like a Paramore (Riot! era) song - not that I'm complaining coz I love it!) 3. Girlfriend (Did someone say Bop? - For me it was the music video that solidified this as a certified tune) 4. Complicated (When this song first came out I wasn't really into it, as 9 year old me had only known Britney style pop up until then... But its a classic... but Sk8er Boi was better) 5. Head Above Water (Was the perfect comeback single after all Avril had been through... Just wish it was slightly rockier) 6. Don't Tell Me (Too much time has passed so I can't remember my initial thoughts on this song... I don't often come back to this tune. I don't hate it but I don't love it either... My Happy Ending was better) 7. Here's To Never Growing Up (Why so many lyrics in the chorus?! Also the lazy production is unforgivable... AL5 had so many better 1st single choices...)

Well, I don’t know if I can properly answer you but clearly different elements played the game. First of all the timing. It had more time before Christmas arrived to climb charts. Bite me was released 2-3 weeks before Mariah Carey and company started stealing all the streams and chart positions. Bite Me was “sponsored” with TV performances for a month only basically (mid-Nov to mid-Dec, then pause and Dick Clark) and during that month wasn’t bad. Also the debut of Bite Me as Spotify streaming was better than HAW. I strongly believe Bite Me had to be released in August or September because it’s a song which needed more time, time which was given to HAW and not to Bite me. Most Avril fans will say that timing is the main reason why Bite Me didn't chart and just didn't stick. She released the single in the midst of Taylor Swift (Red TV), Adele (30), Ed Sheeran (=), Bruno Mars (Smokin Out The Window), as well as a bunch of country music artists. And all of this on the eve of the Christmas freeze. There was no way she could compete with all that. But personally, I think there are only two REAL reasons behind Bite Me's lack of impact. The first reason is the indisputable fact that Avril is a non-factor in the pop music world. Absolutely no one among the general public (particularly those in her casual fanbase) has been checking for her. When people think 'Avril Lavigne', they'll associate her with her classics from the 00's. They're more than likely not interested in the current stuff that she's up to. In fact, back in 2019, no one even knew that HAW (both the song and the album) even existed. And nowadays, no one is even aware that Avril is releasing new material. Avril is a pop star, and she has no chance of getting a chart hit unless pop radio plays her songs. And pop radio just won't support a pop star who hasn't been relevant since 2007 or so. The second reason is the inconspicuous fact that Bite Me isn't a full-on pop song. It certainly isn't radio-friendly, especially by current standards. The song has a very piercing, hard-hitting tone that pop radio won't touch. Moreover, the song undoubtedly sounds like it could've been released in 2007. Despite its so-called resurgence, pop-punk has yet to be embraced by the pop music audience as a whole. The genre is still only has a niche type of popularity in the pop market. And before anyone says anything, the rise of Olivia Rodrigo is NOT evidence that pop-punk or 'girl rawk' is mainstream. To be honest, good 4 u isn’t at all a pop-punk song, a ‘rawk’ song, or even an ‘alt’ song. It’s essentially a messy song with Lorde-ish verses and Disney-ized Paramore rip-off choruses. On the flip side, Bite Me is 100% pure pop-punk, and not tailor-made for mainstream radio. After all, it’s charting on alternative for a reason. Sorry for the rant. But I think there’s some truth to what I just said.

I agree Good 4 U isn't as pop-punk as people make it out to be. I like it though. I would prefer Avril make good music than manufactured nonsense she is not into so I am glad Bite Me is charting on alternative. I do however disagree on the release timing. Even for people not interested in Adele or Taylor their releases dominated every single thing to do with music and music related news so would drown out any and all other 'minor' releases. For eg just a casual listener on Youtube or whatever would just see Taylor and Adele ads and content, even I did all the time and wasn't remotely interested in their releases.

Whilst MHE is clearly the better song, I actually think DTM was a wise choice for first single. It’s still a good song but also had a really good message behind it for her predominantly young female fanbase at the time. UMS was make or break for people taking her seriously as an artist, and I really think the pretty mature message in DTM, rather than just putting out another breakup/boy bashing song really helped with that.

I think MFP is right but also Taylor and Adele their individual songs charted (I only checked Spotify tho) leaving all the other songs struggling to keep their placement on the charts. Timing was also a strong factor plus lack of promo.
