If you're reading this, you probably don't need us to remind you how impactful Avril Lavigne’s debut single “Complicated” and its accompanying album Let Go were in the early aughts.

A time when Lavigne's image as a pop-punk princess image ruled. When things were simple and wearing ties with tank tops was a major thing. A time when blink-182 dominated the radio, not Kardashian-related headlines, and when professional skateboarders were considered celebs (remember, like seriously, who didn’t have a major crush on Ryan Sheckler?).
Now two decades later, it is officially 20th anniversary as a recording artist. While her debut album dropped on June of 2002, Avril officially arrived on the scene exactly 20 years ago today — March 11, 2002 — with the release of her debut single, “Complicated," which she now calls "the most important song" of her career.
"It's so extremely special, and as the years have gone on, it's become even more meaningful to me, just with that being my first single," Avril admitted to ABC Audio. "I wrote it when I was 16 with Lauren Christy. I put it out when I was 17.”
"It was my first song and it was the first video. It was on the radio, it was a huge hit and, like, launched my career," Avril added. "So it's, like, in a way...the most important song, too.”
Listing off a few accolades and accomplishments — after its release "Complicated" reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned Avril two GRAMMY nominations. The track additionally earned the pop-punk princess a Juno Award and and title of Best New Artist in a Video at the MTV VMAs. And when Rolling Stone ran a poll asking readers to pick the top singles of the 2000s,

Breaking down the story behind the Song to Glamour, Avril said; “When we were writing ‘Complicated,’ I thought, ‘this is totally a song that could be on the radio.’ I remember thinking that in my little brain, being like, ‘I can totally hear this.’ I felt really good about it. I loved it right away."
Avril also revealed the inspiration for the track “came from how it really bothered me when my male and female friends would be in the world putting on a face and not being true to themselves, but I didn't have anyone in particular in mind when I wrote it. I was a teenager, so it's more about what people are like in general. The same with ‘Sk8er Boi’—high school experiences, different groups and cliques, and stuff like that.”
Reflecting back on that time, Avril shared, “this was the first song I went around and played for all these radio stations. I had to work very hard. It was a total whirlwind, and it happened super quick. My life was a never-ending promo tour. So when I think of the song, I think about how, as a new artist, I was in two to three cities a day, flying at 6 AM, waking up at 4 AM to get to the airport. It taught me so much about hard work and how that pays off. I love performing the song even to this day because it has so much meaning behind it.”
“Now when I'm up onstage singing it, I think of all my tours and how long I've been singing the song. I look back on it fondly. The song that changed my life completely—I owe a lot to it.”
Throughout her career, Avril has remained faithful to her roots, and though at times she's lightly switched up her sound and image by dying her hair pink, or wearing less black, her point of view hasn't ever really changed — and unlike her hit single, it’s not that complicated.
Her latest album Love Sux keeps on with the punk princess tradition and as before Avril looked to her friends for inspiration, admitting, "I kind of just got together with my friends and made a really fun record.” Adding, “I didn't want it to be serious or anything… I just wanted it to be a good time and write songs for the live show.”
Speaking of, its safe to say Avril will most definitely be singing “Complicated,” as well as tracks of her new album on her upcoming tour. And though U.S. dates have yet to be released, Avril assures they're coming.
