I found this video on Youtube, where Terry McBride, CEO of Nettwerk and former manager of Avril, explains how Nettwerk discovered Avril. He mentions that they had offered her a demo deal and that they had sent her to NYC to work with some producers. They had to rip the deal off, once LA Reid wanted to sign her. Has anyone ever heard about this?

I mean it coincides with what I've heard before, in that Avril went down to NYC at 15 years old to work with Peter Zizzo, LA came to hear her sing, and signed her. The original plan was to make a demo tape which is why she was working with Zizzo.

Labels usually offer demo deals to new singers, in order to know the direction and the sound of the artist. Nettwerk is not only a management company, it is also a label which supports many Canadian artists and also international ones... so, if Avril worked with Peter Zizzo, and maybe even went to LA, had her demos done, and Nettwerk liked her demos, maybe they could've signed her, right? I find incredible that, the label that once discovered her and sent her to NYC to develop her talent, even though she signed for a major American label, it ended up being her management team, which turned up to be the best decision IMO (from her backing band choice, which fit completely her image in 2002; to how to deal with the label and let her be, without putting any pressure on her)

She never completed a demo. According to this interview, the guy said they heard Avril through a VHS tape and decided to give her a demo deal. At this time Avril had sent VHS tapes to different labels and this was also when she was being managed by Cliff Fabri. Nettwerk heard the tape and gave her a demo deal and arranged for her to work with Peter. They wrote a few songs together including Why. LA heard she was there and came to hear her sing and since he signed her to an actual record deal there was no need to complete the demo. After this Avril had a falling out with Cliff because she and her family were duped into believing he didn't have her best interests at heart. Which is why she was then looking for new management and went back with Nettwerk.
