I started to listen her old albums, to kill the pain since we are waiting for AL6 and this album was the first one I copy-pasted to my iPhone just the way it is.

I think this is what is happening to all of us! I'm currently listening non-stop TBDT after listening to UMS for a few days. I'm moving to GL in a couple of days maybe

Agree! When I was younger like 10 years ago I didnt feel the lyrics in for example in Together or Forgotten. Now I am old as heck and gone through a lot I love them! I was listening especially Together.

Am I the only one who think My Happy Ending proved her writing skill lyrically and melody? Or most of the job come from Butch Walker??

Just listened to the complete album. It's been my favorite album because of songs like My Happy Ending, He Wasn't, Fall to Pieces, Who Knows. I like that the whole album has that theme of angst and post break up feeling and still has some empowering lyrics like in DTM. It is very emotional yet has songs like Freak Out, IAGWIW, HW to not make you depressed either. Like you can vent, cry, and still have fun listening to this album. I think that is also why I enjoy the performances of these songs as well.

Is always about personal tastes and opinions, but for me this album is the perfection. When it came out I was about 20 years old, and I consumed the cd. Remains my favorite because the production is excellent, the lyrics are mature and deep.

This is truly her worst album. The lyrics are just plain bad and childish. Every track sounds the same and she showed no artistic growth compared to the previous record. It sold so much based on Let Go and the expectations people had for this album. It spawned no classics and it currently has the lowest recurrent streams and sales from all of her album. It would have ruined her career if the follow-up album wasn't TBDT, that God for that.

And Nobody’s Home is a fan favorite. Don’t Tell Me wasn’t that commercially successful but I think is still a recognizable song of hers.

I understand why it has less streams because it's very much of its time. that slightly heavier sound isn't one people listen back on that much. LG and TBDT are more accessible because they have more pop elements and are more fun.
I will agree the lyrics are mostly bad and very bland (my most major problem with the album) and her delivery is largely emotionless (the songs had much more personality to them when she performed them on the bonez tour, especially Slipped Away) but I wouldn't say it's her worst. It works as a cohesive body of work. She had a clear idea of what she wanted sound and tone wise and executed it pretty well. It was very fitting at the time when heavier music had become very mainstream and was right for her fans who wanted an angstier, heavier album at the time. It felt like a natural progression from LG.

I’d say it showed some artistic growth in that it was clear most, if not all, of LG was written for her whereas she wrote a lot more on this album. Yes the lyrics were worse but that was always going to happen when you have a 19 year old having more input when before it was a team of experienced songwriters. At least she tried lol. Still think it’s a solid album for a teenager and definitely one of my favourites.

I think it's because a lot of her fans are partial to rock music and that's the closest thing she's made to a rock album. I think that fans are also more partial to her music that is dark or serious. While nobody ever mentions this, I personally think a lot of people's attachment to this album is more to do with the memories they have listening to it in their childhoods. That's a large reason why I love LG. This is my all-time favorite Avril album because of everything you said. At heart I'm a rock/alternative guy so when it dropped I fell in love with it. The album's very serious and emotional tone definitely affected me. Even though I was 22/23 when it was released, it brought back a lot of stuff from my childhood. I think that's why Nobody's Home, especially the acoustic version, is my all-time favorite Avril song. I had the opportunity to hear her play it live in 2005 where I was no more than twenty feet from her, it really moved me. I think whenever you have an album that takes on real-life issues such as the death of a loved one, a broken home, heartbreak, female specific pressures and questioning your place in the world, people are going to create an emotional attachment to it. I'd be curious to see how many fans who were able to experience UMS and LG in real time, list at least one of them as one of their favorite albums. I think that would be an interesting statistic to look at. It was nice to have Who Knows and Freak Out included. Not the deepest lyrics by any stretch but they did bring some light to all the heaviness. I Always Get What I Want always kinda seemed out of place for this album. But I think they needed to have at least one more "positive" track. All in all though I can honestly say I never get tired of listening to UMS. So anyway, that's my two cents on my all-time favorite Avril Album.
