GL used to be my favourite of her records. Then, for quite a long while, I considered it only okay - maybe a little bit better than TBDT, but no way better than UMS and LG. But now I just listened to it again for the first time in months and I realized that it's actually pretty good.
Sure, it has quite some weaknesses: the production is meh, the drums sound fake and are pretty boring most of the time, the lyrics aren't that good, every single song follows the same melodical pattern, and WTH and Smile are kinda unfitting (though I do like them, especially WTH).
But then there's Avril's voice - she's got such a vocal range! It might sound a little high-pitched sometimes (because of the mediocre production?), but I personally can ignore that. And I think that despite the rather weak lyrics you can really feel the emotion in a lot of the songs; listening to songs like "Goodbye", "Everybody Hurts" and "Not Enough" almost makes me cry because I can totally feel how much that divorce from Deryck must have hurt her. And then there's "Darlin", my absolute favourite off this record. Listening to Avril singing "I wish you could be happy instead. There's nothing else I can do but love you the best that I can" makes me cry my eyes out.
All in all, I think it's a very good album; I definitely like it more than TBDT and especially AL. It could have been better, though (e.g. decent drums and production), but oh well... shoulda coulda would xD

I'm always confused when people say one of GL's problems was the lyrics being weak but then say UMS is better. I mean, if we're talking poor lyrics... The thing that has always pulled UMS down for me was the lyrics, not on every song but on the majority. GL would be the opposite for me. Some weak but not terrible patches but overall very honest lyrics which are thought out and paint a picture, suiting the style of the song they're in.

Frankly I think both albums are weak in their lyrical quality but yes. I think her best lyrics are on LG and TBDT and some songs on AL like GYWYL, Hello Heartache, etc.

I do like the simplicity of a few of GL's lyrics, but a lot of them are just too simple imo. "I told you everything, you know my feelings" might just be some of the weakest lyrics Avril ever wrote. But I agree with what you wrote about UMS: a lot of those songs have pretty weak lyrics too, maybe even weaker than GL's lyrics. LG has the best lyrics and TBDT's are pretty good too (even though I don't like many of the songs' topics - they're so unrelatable).

I heared Push a few days ago and it blew my mind. I think this song & Bitchin' Summer are the most LG sounding songs since LG. I wish we had the unreleased songs from it.

As of right now, I think GL has to be my favorite era. While WTH and Smile feel out of place, I do genuinely love those songs. Also, her style this era was the best I think she's had. Also, the clothes that came out of Abbey Dawn at this time were much better and seemed more mature that the first few lines and the more recent stuff. Just her style, energy, everything about this era (besides the lack of promo) was pretty much perfect. That being said, her live performances on tour did introduce the infamous "accent" that she has started using. The soundcheck sessions tho were absolutely beautiful. Hearing her sing the background melody of the bridge on WYWH is still one of my favorites. WTH.TV was a nice look into some of the behind the scenes of her promoting the album. Overall, I think she killed it this era, despite lack of proper promo.

I didn't know Avril before TBDT era, so I have no idea what LG era and UMS era were like. But among the three eras that I experienced, GL was my favourite too.
Avril seemed so happy and full of life during that era. She was very active on YouTube (and Twitter too, I think ... not so sure anymore). And I think her performances were great. I never noticed that weird accent, and I still don't. Maybe I just haven't seen those performances...
I also finally got some AD clothes. I really liked the designs during that time, and I still like most of them a lot.
But most important of all to me: I finally got to see Avril live! My first concert ever. Even after 6 years it still feels like a dream.

This is by far the most dedicated and heart-felt album. The vocal remains raw (although there is still autotune), keeps the short distance between listener and her, and allow to be known of how she feels through her voice. Really reach the effect of connection. And I can feel how she is so frustrated between let go and keep holding on since there are sweet and bitter tone in different songs, which I absolutely understand and she emotes it completely. Although there are still lot left to mastering but I accept the fact this album maybe rushed bc of dramas. I have not yet found any songs can be replaced from past album or recent album, proves how special is the mixture and picture

While I can appreciate Avril's effort in producing some songs and believe it's quite close to be a perfect album in terms of thematic-then...WTH and Smile...-I found it boring from the beginning and I still do. I do love some tracks off of it, specially Everybody Hurts and Not Enough, but I couldn't listen to it in tis entirety due to the lack of upbeat songs. Maybe I would if the instrumentation wasn't so minimalistic and would create some contrast between songs.

Where she shined with her acapella with the whole theme of being a 10. Where are them instrumentals? Where are them contrast?

UMS is and will always be my favourite record but I don't think I've listened to any record more than GL, Push probably being one of the songs I've listened most, ever. I just never skip it, it is that good. Plus I have two versions of it on my iPod and love both. Everybody Hurts is a masterpiece. Remember When has simple lyrics but the melody is incredible. I'm a huge Beatles/John Lennon fan and it reminds me a lot of "Imagine", not sure why, probably the piano. Smile, I learned to love with time. It was just okay back in 2011 but ever since I learned to play it on electric guitar I completely adore it. 4 Real is also a very solid track, I love the fact she did it completely by herself. All in all, GL is 10 out of 10 for me.

I dont nderstand how people can say this is not her best work. I mean I LOVE this album, except Black Star cringle. Hate that. But I love from the beginning to the end.
My holy trinity is UMS, TBDT, GL
