I'm gonna say something blasphemous, so you guys should get your pitchforks ready. If I hadn't heard Avril sing the lyrics to a lot of her songs like "My Happy Ending," "Complicated," and "I Can Do Better," I would have thought that the songs were cringey and not worth listening to. The lyrics by themselves come across as super cringey, but her vocals make them compelling. For example, when I first read, "All this time you were pretending, so much for my happy ending" I cringed a little, but Avril's voice and the way she sings it makes it so good to listen to.

Rhyming dead with dead in the first verse of MHE is a personal fave

Supposedly Butch wrote the first verse of MHE and Avril came up with the chorus and rest of the verses so we can forgive her lol

Technically she rhymes Dead with Said and then rhymes Dead with Thread. But yeah, the better parts of MHE were apparently written by her

I really like Bigger Wow but I have felt since the album came out that it could have been better. I realize that it’s not Avril’s fault due to Lyme, but I thought her voice sounded extra nasally on that song. Her vocals sound like she has a cold or allergies. I feel like if they just had re-recorded her vocals on a different day then they could have sounded a lot better, especially since her vocals on the other songs on HAW don’t sound nasally. It bums me out a bit because otherwise it’s one of my favorites on the album.

The piano is too good and the lyrics are empowering. I think songs like Alice, Birdie, Push are the cringyest to listen to (vocal wise). The vocals are just too high pitched, strained, and almost yelling. It sucks because they are good songs.

But it's true, Alice is a gorgeous song but too much yelling.

^ Yes, I like Alice but she could have figured out a better way to sing that part.

I don't think Alice it's too "shouty". They are just normal belts. But i think the problem is the chorus is too basic. The melody is not variyng too much and it looks like she's screaming just one note instead of singing a melody. if that's makes sense. I alaways thought the chorus of Alice was the weakest part of the song since it came out (and the second verse and bridge the best).
it feels blant and monotonous, i think that's why it feels so "shouty". The moment you put some variaty or runs or even different high notes i think it will get way better.
By the way, so dissapointed she changed the name to Alice. "Undergroud" was so much better (even "Alice Underground")

If I were Avril and cared about my popularity, I would stick to her old style of "rock" music forever, because I don't think there's anything new she can offer. She is not as ambitious and dedicated as she was before GL, she never puts her money where her mouth is, she is getting old and is losing her teen appeal as a result, but her peak was when she made guitar-driven songs with catchy melodies. That's it, that's Avril. HAW is a mature record, but if she wants to be mature she needs to blend the maturity with what made her Avril. The Avril Lavigne brand has pop rock instrumental with catchy melodies, and to rise above this image she would need to be a big success again, to which she doesn't put any effort, so why to try to be modern? Avril has a good chunk of fans, and they are people she conquered with her work from the first five years of her career. Yeah, lots of them don't listen to her anymore because their tastes have evolved and that's natural, but lots would stay faithfull and you know what? If you do a research you will see that the young teenagers that are getting into her nowadays are into her early music, because that's different from things that's playing on radio, and trying to abide to the typical style will only make her like the other pop acts. Interesting post

Sometimes I feel like Avril (or her team) kind of forced herself to write her own songs just because she (or her team) wanted to look like a "real" musician, especially when she was younger. I'll have to say that some of her lyrics are quite lame, but some songs are tolerable because the music is enjoyable/catchy. I think it's okay when a singer can only sing and not write their own music because some people can only sing, some can only write, and some can do both. Even there's some case when someone can do both but wasn't born or attractive enough to be a performer/entertainer/star. But I think she really grew as a songwriter.

i agree with you. in the past i used to think an artist wasn't a real artist if he/she didn't write the lyrics. But years ago i discovered the amazing world of vocalists and siging masters. I thought to myself: they're teelling the story through their singing, it's their voices and their hard work and vocal technique that they've worked for years or decades that make them artists so i changed my mind.
The thing with Avril is that...she has just a few self-written songs and those in particular aren't even than bad, some of them really good actually. Most of her songs are co-written, maybe 4-5 or 8 writters and still, the lyrics are bad...I always wondered how a writting lyrics session looks like 'cause man... I get the TBDT lyrics (somehow), they were meant to be funny or stupid but a lot of them are like that. Some others in her career are just cringey.
So idk if it's her fault 100% of not being able to write good lyrics or just that she (and her team/writters) always take the easy way and write easy lyrics, meaningless and just catchy, just to fit the ryme because they're lazy and don't care about the song or maybe the song doesn't have a clear message or purpose (bigger wow i'm looking at you)
