Hello everyone I'm sure and I hope I'm not the only Harry Potter fan here. I've grown up with the movies and got myself into the books as well. It is such a wonderful and magical story, not only about the eternal war of good vs evil, but it is also about friendship, family, love and so much more. I have created this thread because I'd love to discuss about the books and movies with whoever would love to talk about it Who has never wanted to be one of them? Who is your favourite character? What's your favourite book? What's your favourite movie? Books or Movies? What would you have liked to see in the movies that wasn't included? There's so much to talk about, but I'd like to start with that questions

I LOVE Harry Potter! It's one of my biggest passions. I grew up with it. I watched the first movie when I was 6 or 7 years old, afterwards I started reading the books. But I was an extremely slow reader back then so the only book I ended up reading before its movie was released was Deathly Hallows (maybe also Half-Blood Prince, but I'm not sure about that, it's so long ago).
My favourite character is probably Harry. The older I get the more I see myself in him. He seems to be a rather quiet and thoughtful person. At the same time he can be kinda oblivious (e.g. that awful date with Cho in Order of the Phoenix; I personally would've reacted exactly the same way as Harry did, though). But he's also very chaotic and always procrastinates (just see Goblet of Fire). When he's in the mood he can be hilariously sassy. And I admire the fact that despite everything he had to go through his will to live has always been much stronger than the idea of giving up. Oh, and he's very humble. I like that too.
My favourite book is Order of the Phoenix. I think you get to know Harry more than ever. All these typical feelings you have as a teenager; this "no one understands me" and this inexplicable anger and frustration that Harry feels... it's so well written. The entire book is extremely well written. Very detailed, I love that. Then there's that whole riddle about the weapon and the Department of Mysteries. And Umbridge, of course. She's so awesome; I love to hate her. And every chapter ends with something that makes you want to keep reading.
My favourite movie is Chamber of Secrets. I can't really say why, I just like it the most, I guess. Philosopher's Stone is really good, too, though.
I definitely prefer the books. Some of the movies are horrible. Movies 4 and 6 are almost unbearable, especially the latter. Movies 3, 7.1, and 5 are okay. Movie 7.2 could have been good if it wasn't for that awful ending that just ruins everything imo.
There are many things I would've loved to see in the movies. Here are a few: Peeves; the memories about Gaunt and Hepzibah Smith; more of the Department of Mysteries; Lockhart and Neville's parents at St. Mungo's; that battle at the end of book 6.

I was literally just thinking about this earlier today lol Well I only just recently got into Harry Potter, to be honest. All the kids in my class always loved it but I never cared about it. I watched part of the first movie in the 5th grade in school and sometimes in high school orchestra class we played music from the movies, but that was my only exposure to it. I had never read the books or watched the movies. But recently I had been wanting to try reading the books and someone at my work recommended them to me since I am a fan of fantasy. So I read the first book some months ago and I LOVED it!!! I quickly sought out the next books and bought the 8-film DVD collection. I've been reading one book at a time and then watching its film to see how they compare. I am currently reading through Goblet of Fire. I think I relatively know the story but please no major spoilers! As for your questions: Who is your favourite character? Harry is an obvious choice, but aside from him, I love Hermoine. I relate to her so much, as I am also a bookworm and a perfectionist. I take my schoolwork very seriously too. I also appreciate that J.K. Rowling wrote a female character that is smart and often the brains behind everything, rather than just being there to act dumb or look pretty. What's your favourite book? So far it's The Prisoner of Azkaban. I just love the whole story. What's your favourite movie? So far again, it's Prisoner of Azkaban. I feel gross saying this because Daniel Radcliffe was like 15 at the time of making that movie (and in the movie itself, Harry is only 13) but that's when he started getting cute lol I noticed they omitted some of the details from the book, but overall I like the movie a lot. Books or Movies? Definitely the books. The movies so far are pretty good as well and it's nice to see the wizarding world come to life. But definitely the books. What would you have liked to see in the movies that wasn't included? To be honest, I don't know, as I have only made it up to the first 3 books and movies. The first 2 movies I found to be pretty accurate representations of the books. The third was where I noticed they cut out some stuff. For now I don't have an answer for this.

Thank you for replying I have noticed I haven't answered to my questions myself I have grown up with the movies (I was 7/8 when the first film was released), every year there was the usual appointment at the cinema to watch the new one and my friends and I would often play at Harry Potter - just to make you understand how obsessed my friends and I were I have recently got into the books tho, and I'm starting to read " The Goblet of Fire" now.... tho I have already read the last book, because when " The Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 1" was released, I couldn't wait another year to know how it was going to end As for my questions: Who is your favourite character? My favourite character is Hermione Granger. I have always loved how smart she is. The guys would be lost without her. I really like that JK Rowling, as Bogo said, created a female heroine, outside of standards... she's a bookworm, but she isn't shy, on the contrary she's quite bossy, but she also has a big heart and doesn't wear glasses like the stereotype, she's a normal girl, and I see myself into her a lot What's your favourite book?" The Prisoner of Azkaban" is my favourite so far. I know the books will get darker from now on. I think JK Rowling is a great writer, the books have been really amazing so far (I am reading them in English, so I can learn a bit as well haha), really easy to read and understand, funny, deep and really great at describing things and feelings. What I love the most is that it's not only a story about good vs evil, but it is also a story about friendship coping with pain and loss of a loved one. The romantic side is not the main point, hence why Hermione and Ron end up together only at the end I think (sorry, I went a bit off topic here haha) What's your favourite movie?I love " The Prisoner of Azkaban", I have no idea how many times I've watched it and " The Deathly Hallows Part 1" because it's mainly focused on the trio and you can see how great actors Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson are in my opinion Books or Movies?Books But I have to say, obviously they couldn't put everything there is in the books inside a movie, but I think they did their best What would you have liked to see in the movies that wasn't included?Even tho I've already watched all the movies, as I said before, I'm starting the 4th book now, so as for the comparison I can only talk about the first 3 movies. I would have loved to see Hermione's challenge as well, when they have to go through different obstacles to get to the Philosopher's stone, each obstacle highlighting their skills. And I would have loved to see Hermione again going with Harry, when he runs after Sirius, instead of staying with Ron (as you can see in the movie).

Another huge HP fan here I remember having the books read to me as a child and when the first few films came out I had them on VHS and absolutely loved them. But it wasn't until I was about 13 that I started to become a proper fan of HP and I have been completely enamoured with it ever since. Who is your favourite character?Okay, it is damn near impossible for me to pick just one so I'll name a few. Remus Lupin has always been a favourite of mine. I can relate to his bookishness and the fact that he was probably the most reserved and cautious of the Marauders. His backstory is pretty interesting too, I like how his having to hide away a lot and the transformation that he goes through because of his condition can be applied to so many different real life situations that people go through. I also like that he is often a calm voice of reason, he doesn't tend to fly off the handle and does what is right. Sirius Black is also one of my favourites, strangely, because he is almost the antithesis of Lupin. They are both good people, but approach it in different ways. Sirius is much more of a joker and a bit of a firecracker, starting arguments etc. But I adore his wit and the genuine affection that he has for his friends and for Harry. Then there is Dumbledore. I love that although Dumbledore is a really wise and caring character, he is a deeply flawed one also. I loved reading about his past and what happened with his sister. Also, he is an immensely quotable character haha. Hermione. I really relate to Hermione. She is another bookish character that does her own thing, not caring about what anyone else is doing. Plus let's be honest, if it wasn't for Hermione saving their ass on multiple occasions, Harry and Ron wouldn't even have made it to the end of the first book. McGonagall. She's just brilliant. So stern and severe but with a wicked sense of humour and a genuine care for her students. What's your favourite book?Again, this is really difficult because I love them all for so many different reasons. But I suppose if you were to force an answer out of me it would probably be the Prisoner of Azkaban. I think there is a clear shift in tone between the Prisoner of Azkaban compared to the first two books. It seems a bit darker, a bit more adult, and yet it retains a lot of the childish charm that were in the earlier ones. It has a definite sense that they are all on the cusp of something. Also, it is the book where two of my favourite characters are introduced - Sirius and Lupin. I also feel like this is the book where the wizarding world becomes that much richer - obviously, the HP universe is incredibly detailed and intricate in the first two, but this is the one that introduces us to so many new aspects all at once. There are the Dementor's, ministry interference, new animals such as Buckbeak, the patronus, and of course this is where they first visit Hogsmeade too. In many ways I think this book defines much of what HP means to me. What's your favourite movie?
I really don't want to be a bore and say Prisoner of Azkaban again but it probably is my favourite film too - I'll spare you the repitition though, as I've listed many of the reasons in the paragraph above. But it's always the one that I find myself going back to time and time again. I've watched it so many times I've lost count. It's just a great adaptation. I also really like the look of the film. I don't like that in the later films they made every scene look really dark. I get that it's supposed to reflect what is going on in the wizarding world, but I feel like Prisoner of Azkaban had that and didn't take it too far like the others. They got it just right. Books or movies?Books, obviously there is nothing better than curling up and losing yourself inside the books. I do really like the films and I think they done a good job on most of them (the Half-Blood Prince film was a let down - such a great book and a very mediocre film) but reading the books gives you better insight into the wizarding world and a more intimate view of the characters. Also, so many of the best parts of the series weren't included in the films. What would you like to see in the movies that wasn't included? So many things. I would have liked to have seen Peeves. I did hear somewhere that they filmed scenes for Peeves for the first film but they got cut and they never reintroduced him. I also would have liked to have seen the memories about Gaunt and more of Voldemort's childhood. I don't want to post any spoilers since BogoGog24 is still reading, but there is a part in the Goblet of Fire with Barty Crouch Snr. which would have been good on screen. I also would have liked to have seen Neville's parents at St. Mungo's and the the confrontation between Harry and Lupin.

Lol, I grew up reading Harry Potter and actually it was the first "real book" I ever read in English. I love it. I think that those books are perfectly eligible to become part of the English cannon in the future, just as Dickens' Oliver Twist did- both because of their cultural importance and the literary merit. It was one of the two books-the other being The Lord of The Rings- that got me into writing fantasy and magic fiction. I'd go on and on but I'll just stick to the questions:
Favourite character
Though one, but for sure NOT Harry. Don't misunderstand me, Harry is a great, courageous person with the right morals, but to me he wouldn't have survived through all the saga without Hermione. She's probably the character I like the most, both because of her virtues and her flaws. I can totally relate to her nerd-iness and love for books and also to her social awkwardness, occasional fits of rage and temperament. My second choice would be Remus Lupin, I absolutely loved his character, and I think his younger self is even more relatable to me than Hermione's- I also have a thing for secret passages and hidden rooms, so I totally see me making something like the Marauder's Map if I had the ability. Another character I love to bits is Luna Lovegood's. She is such a good person, and she somehow stays cheerful after all the bad things that happen to her. She has this unique, lovely thing about her- unlike Hannah Abbot. I also like Ron's character a lot. Most Harry Potter fans I know sort of despise him- and let's face it, he may not be the brightest spark in the universe, but it's not like he is Crabbe or Goyle level of dumb- but I think he is a really good person and it's a very realistic character: he is not that much of a perfect friend, but he has fallouts with Harry. Quite often, actually. Still, they are always for each other when the time comes.
Favourite Book
I think the last books are the best written ones. Deathly Hallows and Half-Blood Prince are probably the best in the writing department but I have this thing for Chamber of Secrets that's maybe more a Let Go sort of thing. Still I think that book still has four of the most memorable moments of all the series- more than any other in the saga- which are 1) when the Weasley brothers kidnap/rescue Harry from Privet Drive after stealing their father's car. I always thought it was based off of a real life experience- you know, it totally sounds like young JK Rowling getting grounded and escaping with some friends for a night out 2) when Ron crashes the aforementioned car against the Whomping Willow. That ALSO sounds a lot like it happened to her at some point. 3) when Dobby nearly kills Harry "for his own good". Like, Dobby is just like the Spanish Inquisition: it's wicked, it's brutal, claims it's for a good cause and you don't expect him. 4)The cooking of the Polyjuice potion. Hermione at her best, mastering the brewing of something that was beyond her years in such a chemistry-unfriendly environment as a flooded bathroom. The fact she got the wrong hair and all her work backfired for her is just the icing on the cake.
Favourite movie
Goblet of fire, maybe? I mean the dragons...I don't know, they all looked good to me-although I must say that I agree with Ezz. Halfblooded Prince could have been SO MUCH better. I also liked the last one a lot. But referring terms of visual appeal, Prisoner of Azkaban is the best. It had sort of this impossible Gothic sceneries that were more German than English at some instances, and the film has a warm, orange-ish lighting and colouring to it that it's really nice and deftly-handed.
Books or movies?
Books. The movies were great adaptations in general, but the books are on their way to become literary classics. I have to say that I loved most of the cast's performances, specially Watson's and Grint's, as the latter often goes overlooked.
What would I have liked to see in the movies?
Peeves is an absolute must here. I also missed something explaining the death of Helena Hufflepuff, and also Voldemort's mother story, and of course, the plot revolving about Grindelwald's imprisonment and Ariana's death- hopefully we will have that in Fantastic Beasts. And also some proper flashback to the Marauder's mischiefs. But I'm mostly content with the movies.

I agree with you thyarchery that it's going to be a literature classic, not only because of how well written it is but also because of its cultural impact I remember that HP was the first huge saga that came out... and it's probably the one with the most diverse fan-base, which still steadily grows I forgot to mention Peeves before, you guys are right... he is surely the character that I also missed in the films I think that many fans may dislike Ron for the fact that he's left the trio, because of its temperamental being and the fact that many would have loved Hermione to end up with Harry instead ( even JK Rowling admitted that Hermione and Harry would have been more believable, and that she paired her with Ron simply out of personal reasons) but I think I'm quite alike him in the sense that I'm pretty messy, I'm very loyal and just love to have a good laugh, so I also like him as a character I think the entire cast was great, and it's amazing to see how the actors have evolved and how much they've learned performing in the films do you guys think there'll be a re-make in the future? Like an animated series in 10/15 years? I could never imagine a re-make with a complete new cast haha I remember that in an interview, JK Rowling said that she's ended the series but that she could write HP 8/9/10 etc if she wanted to... do you think it'll happen or do you think the story is complete as it is now? To be honest I find it complete as it is now, I'd like to imagine Harry, Ron and Hermione's lives in the future, but I guess that's just for my imagination to play around

Yeah I think the casting for the HP movies was practically perfect. I agree with thyarchery that Rupert Grint doesn't get enough recognition for his portrayal of Ron. He played Ron exactly how I imagined him in the books, and his comic timing in parts was fantastic. @sarah93 I suppose Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is maybe an attempt at finishing the series and letting us see how everyone turned out, but I don't know ... I enjoyed the Cursed Child but it always felt kind of separate to the rest of HP for me. I would love it if she done a spin-off book about some of the less significant characters. I really hope they don't do a re-make. At least not any time soon. As mentioned above, the casting was amazing for the films and I just don't think that a remake would be necessary or even able to compete. I've seen a few people online saying that they would like an HP TV series because then they wouldn't have the same time constraints as a film and they would be able to fit more of the book content in. I don't think that's a bad idea, but only if it happens waaaay in the future haha.

I mean, when I see Harry, I see him as Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint as Ron, Emma Watson as Hermione and so on, beside the films are still doing great so I think that if it happens, it'll be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay in the future (hopefully when I'll be in my 80s haha so I won't have to worry that much about it haha) Edit: PS: I think that the reason why the cast was so perfect is because the actors have grown up with their characters (as we have haha) - same age, which made everything easier - that they've became one, they've discovered how their lives would go as we have (when the first film was released, the last 3 books didn't exist yet)... beside the characters seem pretty real

For a whole generation Dan, Emma and Rupert are going to be definitive of the HP series as their characters. It would be very difficult to get around that and make people not be sceptical about a re-make. Plus it might not have the same hype, as you mentioned, because the books aren't still being released. I think the films will stand the test of time anyway.

One thing I hate about this generation is that they keep re-making things, instead of coming up with new ideas. There's so many examples I can think of right now, live actions of Beauty and the Beast or other Disney films, sequels to lots of successful movies (Finding Dory, Toy Story 4, Frozen spinoff), the new Star Wars trilogy, Mean Girls musical, The Lord of the Rings TV series, etc.. There are very rarely original ideas anymore and usually the few original ideas are not that good.
I am not that far into the HP saga yet but I would hate to see it be remade down the road. The reason people love it so much is because it's original and it's its own thing, it's not a remake of anything. A remake would never do the story justice and I think lots of hardcore fans would be pissed about it, to be honest. NO. Some things should just be left untouched. Not everything has to be remade or made into sequels or into unnecessary musicals and TV shows. #RantOver
I haven't gotten to that part yet but I kind of already know that Hermoine and Ron end up together and I actually like that. I think it would have been too obvious to pair her with Harry, like that's so cliche to make the lead male and female get together. I think it's more interesting and different to have Hermoine end up with someone unexpected and Harry as well. Ron and Hermoine are also quite opposites in their personalities. I'm not sure Hermoine is like Harry that much either, but she and Ron are definitely very very different, so again, that makes their relationship more interesting IMO.

#RantOver I haven't gotten to that part yet but I kind of already know that Hermoine and Ron end up together and I actually like that. Yeah I completely agree with you Yes, I think that Hermione and Ron balance each other, they're different and complete opposites but complementary opposites sorry to have spoiled that to you btw
