I'm happy to see all this love for Crush. I still think the Holy Trinity of HAW is It Was In Me, Souvenir, and Crush, all together, one after the other, those 3 just put me in this really good mood and takes me to a better place all of a sudden, to the sound of Avril's heavenly vocals. <3

I can picture some music videos from some songs:
Birdie, I think it could be similar to HAW in a dark forest with a bird flying on top of those high trees and she trapped in the forest. Devil, A very dark video, Avril in black trapped in a field of roses with thorns, she begging and desperate crying for help. Maybe like Alice. It Was In Me: Similar to IWY, walking everywhere searching for answers Crush: set in a classical party trying to draw attention of some guy Goddess, she in bed with sexy clothes, similar to Beyonce's Rocket Dumb Blonde: lot of ideas, maybe the Melissa theory or featuring some "Dumb Blondes" recreating some shows/music videos. But it will need a budget. Warrior, she in bed and standing up, then a BTS of the process of the album, music videos, live performances, videos hugging fans and at the end entering the recording studio with a sign in the door that says AL7

Goddess is really great, from the snippits I thought I wouldnt like it that much but I do! As for Bigger Wow, from the snippit I really liked it but as a whole I don’t know, the b-b-b-Bigger Wow part annoys me a bit, maybe it’ll grow on me 😉

Is it me or does Crush sound familiar, the chorus to be specific. Not TMIO or any Avril song. There's just something about it. Maybe a song by Kelly Clarkson from the Meaning of Life album? The style is quite similar.

After several days listening to the album in all its splendour, I want to make a review track by track:
HEAD ABOVE WATER [5/5]
The song that opens the project and also the name of the album. How could it be otherwise, Head Above Water introduces the album in a masterful way, possibly being her best opener ever. The strength of her voice is expressed in deep lyrics that talks about asking for help. The instrumental of the song is powerful and epic. There is nothing negative to say about this song.
BIRDIE [5/5]
"Birdie" is the second song on the album that perfectly follows the first track. The piano is simply wonderful to soon introduce a powerful drummer that accompanies the song at almost every moment. The lyrics show fragility and vulnerability. She wants to escape from the place she’s trapped, and she wants her freedom. A standout track that can be a perfect single choice in the future. To say something negative about the song, I miss some ad-libs at the end of the song to make it mightier.
I FELL IN LOVE WITH THE DEVIL [5/5]
"I Fell In Love With The Devil" is, since now, one of her best creations. Her vocals are completely out of this world in this song, the production is epic and on point, the instrumental makes me goosebumps and the lyrical content is beyond impressive. Special attention to the pre-chorus and the last chorus with the mixture of layers. And absolute sophisticated song which should work the way to future releases.
TELL ME IT’S OVER [4’5/5]
I bet no one of us had ever imagined that Avril could make a comeback with a song like "Tell Me It’s Over". But having listened this non-stop since December, I can proudly say that this is one of her most interesting songs within her career. The vocal ability she delivers in this song is a proof of how an underrated vocalist she is. The production is also on point. I definitely love this. Perhaps it’s not a worthy single choice but its quality justifies its existence.
DUMB BLONDE [4/5]
Ok Avril, you have delivered your best pop song since “What The Hell”, but this song doesn’t fit the album at all. I mean, the message is great, and I understand why she wanted to include the track in the album. However, they should have placed the track in another position because I find weird the transition from “Tell Me It’s Over” to “It Was In Me” with Dumb Blonde in the middle. Apart from this, DB shows how good Avril is creating pop anthems. The Nicki Minaj verse adds some interesting touch, but I prefer the solo version.
IT WAS IN ME [5/5]
BRAVO, BRAVO. I just want to go down on my knees and thank Avril for having created such a masterful track. My God, the song is pure perfection from the very first note to the end. The lyrics are one of the most beautiful thing she has ever written; they portrait her suffering, how bad she wanted to find the strength within. The chorus is beautiful, it sticks in your head so bad, it makes you want to sing it along. Then, the bridge comes and the tears run down your face inevitably. Finally, the high notes come in the final chorus and your wig is in Jupiter. “I’m With You” has now a perfect successor. I beg Avril to make this song the 4th single of the album. And if it's not clear, yes, this is my favourite song on the album.
SOUVENIR [4’5/5]
The way this song has grown on me is completely insane. I wish the chorus was as good as the verses but anyway, the song is beautiful as a whole. The lyrics are surprisingly good to me, simple, but good. It reminds me some personal experiences, and this is probably one of the reasons why I like this song that much.
CRUSH [5/5]
Another song in which Avril shows the amazing vocalist she is. Gosh, this left me breathless. She is so damn vulnerable in this song. The lyrics are so lustrous, so real… Musically, the song can remind to “Tell Me It’s Over” vibe but in a slower way. Her vocals are on point again and the production is wonderful. Another one of my favourite songs. Don’t crush me, Avril, because I’m so crushed right now.
GODDESS [4/5]
The verses of this song are beautiful but there is something missing in the first part of the chorus. Maybe trying to rhyme “pajamas” with “bananas” cringes me a lot. I don’t know if I like that part or not. In Any case, I think it’s a great track in general. The lyrical content could have been better, but I don’t think is that terrible as I’m reading in other reviews. Absolutely in love with the last chorus and those ad-libs. Good job here.
BIGGER WOW [4’5/5]
When I listen to this song, I think that the summer vibe she wanted to portrait in her self-titled album should have been this. The lyrics are simple but the way she sings them lifts the song to another level. The production is great. For me, this is one of her most interesting upbeat songs she has ever done. The way she sings the verse “unafraid of those heights” drives me crazy, love it.
LOVE ME INSANE [3’5/5]
I think the main problem of this song is being placed in such a good work. I find interesting how Avril wanted to try out in this song. However, the song lacks strength in spite of the fact the instrumental is great –the strings are great here–. I definitely like the song but it’s also palpable that the song could be consider the “filler” of the album.
WARRIOR [4’5/5]
The song which closes the album is the yang of “Head Above Water”. Same message but from a completely different perspective. She has won the battle and she’s now a survivor who claims to be a warrior. Cliché lyrics but pretty well executed. The production is on point. Special mention to the bridge, absolutely epic and uplifting. If the song had had higher vocals or a gospel choir this would have been total perfection.
I just can say thank you to Avril because of this amazing piece of work she has created. I know I am not blinded by the hype because I perfectly know I will be saying the same in about two years. This is my favourite album of hers and I can say it with my head held high.

As for the critics.. I simply don't know why they prefer her fun side. Seeing HAW 59 and the self-titled 65 as a Metacritic score it doesn't hurt, it makes me so angry.

It Was In Me, Goddess and Birdie are the best songs. Also I love queen AJ her reaction video on YouTube, she has TASTE unlike certain little black stars and nostalgia critics who don't have mental capacity to appreciate great Adult Contemporary music.

Is it me or does Crush sound familiar, the chorus to be specific. Not TMIO or any Avril song. There's just something about it. I feel this too and I think the reason it sounds familiar is because it’s very reminiscent of Motownn and pop songs from like the ‘50s/‘60s era. That was something that hit me while listening to it and honestly I have kept replaying Crush a lot, I really love it! It’s such a cute song and I love that throwback sound. I can totally imagine her singing it live while dressed in a poodle skirt and saddle shoes, that would be adorable! Based on the snippet, I didn’t think I would like Crush but WOW! It may honestly be my favorite from the record. I also keep going back to play Birdie, that’s my other favorite. Based on snippets, I thought I’d love Bigger Wow but the full song isn’t as good as the snippet makes it sound. And I ended up loving Crush. So just goes to show you can’t really judge a song based on 10 second clips. My top 5 I think: - Crush - TMIO - Birdie - HAW - Warrior For some reason I can’t get into IFILWTD. It is objectively well written and well produced, but I actually don’t care for the song much itself. It just doesn’t do anything for me and isn’t one I care about replaying. It does have some great lyrics though, I really love the line “Can someone send me an angel to borrow a halo?” She did a great job. I’d love for Avril to keep experimenting with that jazz/Motown vibe. I seem to love those songs from her the best. Imagine if we got a whole album of that Zane and Rotem material? God! Would have been her best album ever.

While listening to the album I kept thinking how a lot of the songs are like updated versions of some of her old songs:
HAW = Take Me Away
IFILWTD = Bad Girl
DB = IDHTT
It Was in Me = IWY
Souvenir = Bitchin Summer
Crush = 4 Real
Goddess = Hot
Bigger Wow = ICDB
Warrior = Hush Hush
Also some of the tempos and beats are similar to other songs. Like the instrumental of It Was in Me is similar to IWY as well as the high notes on the bridge. TMIO and Crush have the exact same guitars and percussion like in the beginning of the track. Warrior and Hush Hush have a similar tempo. I was thinking in concert it might be cool for Avril to do a medley of IWY and It Was in Me.

I've got a friend whose favourite song from the album without doubt is "Love me insane", I can't understand haha. It's not an awful song, but I think it's clearly the weakiest.
