Avril Lavigne
In 2015, the “Complicated” hitmaker shocked the world when she revealed in a People interview that she was diagnosed with the disease the year prior. In her interview, Lavigne said that she thought she was “dying” because she was struggling to breathe and talk and she couldn’t move. She also disclosed that for a month she experienced night sweats and feeling like battling the flu.
While the characteristic symptom of Lyme disease is a “bulls-eye rash,” people who contract the infection also suffer a wide range of symptoms including fever, chills, body pains and severe fatigue, among others, according to Mayo Clinic.
The fashion model was diagnosed with Lyme disease back in 2012, and she’s not the only one to battle this condition in her family. Her brother Anwar and mother Yolanda Hadid also have it. Bella and her mother have Lyme neuroborreliosis, which means the infection has already led to the development of neurological complications.
Bella disclosed to the Evening Standard four years ago that her condition has prevented her from functioning normally. Aside from the excruciating pain in her back, she has memory problems. “I stopped driving because I kept crashing, because my brain just stopped working … It affected my memory so I suddenly wouldn’t remember how to drive to Santa Monica from Malibu where I lived.”
Shania Twain
The famous singer’s career has been greatly affected ever since she contracted Lyme disease in 2004. Prior this, she dominated the pop and country charts, but then the infection apparently caused some issues in her vocal cords. She had dysphonia, which is a neurological disorder of the vocal cords.
In order to continue singing, Twain has to do intense warmups and physical therapy. She admitted in the past that doing so has been very difficult for her. Nevertheless, she’s thankful that she’s still able to sing. “I was very scared for a little while that I wouldn’t sing again, ever. … [But] I found a way to do it,” she told People in 2017.
Ben Stiller
The Hollywood funnyman is lucky that he is now symptom-free; however, he has recognized that Lyme disease will never leave his body. In 2011, Stiller also revealed where he got the bacteria from and how it was a struggle to diagnose the condition initially.
“I got it in Nantucket, Massachusetts, a couple of years ago. My knee became inflamed and they couldn’t figure out what it was, they they found it was Lyme,” he told The Hollywood Reporter at the time. Joint pain and swelling especially on the knees are also common symptoms of Lyme disease and this is what the comedian experienced.
Alec Baldwin
The esteemed actor has battled Lyme disease for years. He first publicly recognized his condition during a 2011 interview with the New York Times. Back then, he already admitted that he had chronic Lyme disease. However, he didn’t open up about the disease again until three years ago. And just like Avril, he also thought that he was dying when he had the symptoms for the first time.

Lyme disease is an infection caused by four species of the bacteria Borrelia. Two of which, Borrelia burgdorferi and Borrelia mayonii, are present in the United States and about 300,000 people contract the disease annually through deer tick vectors. Even celebrities also battle this condition. Below are just some of them.

“I got the classic Lyme disease for each successive summer, for five years, every August, like [these] black lung, flu-like symptoms, sweating to death in my bed. … And I really thought, ‘This is it, I’m not going to live,’” Baldwin said.
