Does anyone know how I could possibly troubleshoot why my mom's laptop would just randomly switch off? The battery doesn't work, but been using it like that for a while. It doesn't seem to be heating up, but just in case tried a cooling pad, didn't help either. Did virus check, nada.

Can you tell if the cooling fan is running. When it's not, you usually get an error message. Not always. Do you live in a household where people smoke? Do you have pets. Even if the fan is running, it might not cool properly if cigarette smoke has fouled the cooling fins. When the cooling fins are gunked up with smoke residue, normal household dust and pet hair will stick and cause overheating. Also make sure the intake and exhaust vents are clear and allow air flow. If you let me know the brand and model number, I might be able to provide you some more specific guidance.

Thanks Uncle Bob. My Uncle is visiting and he smokes.... My brother does too when he comes over. I think it runs... Will have to check. It's an Acer Aspire V5 something. Will get the proper info for you. Also, it got broken a while back, so the corner where the charging port is was cracked and kinda gaped... But my friend's boyfriend fixed the port that wasn't working. It still gapes a tiny bit though. Wondering if something isn't loose. Also we moved so it was taken on an airplane...hope the flight didn't knock something bc we didn't have a laptop bag was just in a small suitcase with some clothes and stuff around it.

I'm going to recommend some hardware monitoring software to help determine if the problem is actually thermal. I still need the model number and what version of Windows is it running?

Sorry been busing sorting out our daycare that we are opening. It seems fine atm, we are using another cooling pad. So I am guessing that heating is the problem
