(verse 1)
I was so sure that you were gonna make it
I'd get to hold you tight and tell you how I almost lost it
And now I'm left to lose it
I was so sure you were gonna come out stronger
You'd be laughing at me tearing up and say "you really thought I'd go?"
"You really thought so?"
(chorus)
Now you know all the secrets of the universe too soon
Buddy I love you
I'm gonna love them all like you used to
Didn't get to tell you, did I?
I love you
(verse 2)
Damn it's not fair man you were s'posed to make it
Was gon' be clapping at your wedding, hold your babies, watch you grow old
Not watch you go
(chorus)
(Bridge)
I'm looking up
As I'm downing a shot
Saying "this one's for you"
Before I'm never touching alcohol again
(chorus)
**As a short backstory, one of my best friends from childhood passed away this February. He was in a drunken car crash and didn't die right away, he was in a coma for a couple of days in which we all hoped he would get better. I wrote this song just two days after he actually passed away. He was obsessed with physics, astronomy, the universe in general, and always talked about it with such a passion that it made you want to learn more about it too.
To be honest, the reason I'm posting these on here and asking for a bit of feedback is that I know Avril fans (including myself, not gonna lie) kind of look down on Slipped Away for its too-simple lyrics (even though the song is extremely moving and gives me chills every time). I was wondering if the lyrics of my song were maybe like that too. Usually when I write a song I tweak the lyrics multiple times before coming to a final result. However this one is genuinely how I felt in that moment, I wrote it once and that was it, never touched it again.
Anyway, what do you guys think?
