Thank you guys. This is all good stuff. Avril did state that a part of herself died in those early years. I've not been able to flesh that out. Damned curious if anyone might have details. I suppose for me the most jarring thing about TBDT era was the rictus smile. It wasn't her. Not one bit. The Avril I knew was not afraid to show boredom or displeasure. Fake smiles were for the Disney princesses and allied corporate products. Her smiles in interviews sometimes looked fake or forced, but trying to look pleasant as part of your job is being professional. As a teen she could maybe get away with looking bored or whatever, but it just comes off as rude and immature more than anything. Everyone has to sometimes suck it up and pretend they’re enjoying themselves or whatever if it’s part of their job and that means being an adult and acting professional. She was in her early 20s at this point and even then a lot of times she still came off bratty in a lot of interviews from this era anyway. She was happy and in love, it’s really not a stretch to believe her smile could have been genuine or that she was happy to be playing music she was excited about. You seem to have this very narrow minded view of what Avril or women in general should be and act like and as soon as she or other women like her don’t fit your (presumably male) preferences, that must mean she/they are fake, robotic, too commercial, immature, insipid, disingenuous, a Disney princess, and a bunch of other demeaning stuff.

The word I think of starts with "m" and rhymes with "genie".

Uncle Bob,
I will always be a fan of a certain vintage era. I may even like future releases with any luck (Which was my intent in the broadest possible sense - change for the good). Others here might not be so keen on the earlier work... maybe you like all of it and wouldn't change a thing?
