That Highland Ballroom concert really was... quite something. I watched it on YouTube several years ago, so I don't remember it too well, but I do remember that Avril barely moved at all, kept stroking her hair as if that was more important to her than actually performing, and just really seemed like she'd rather be anywhere else. Oh, and she kept using that super weird accent, ugh. I think they also started the entire show with some sort of instrumental cover of "We Will Rock You", which makes me cringe just thinking about it. This terrible wannabe-rock attitude during some part of the AL era was so annoying (at least looking back at it now).
I agree concerning that "Bad Girl" video, it's just plain disgusting.
The only thing I always found kinda cringey about WYWH's music video is that scene in the bathtub because it's so generic. I've seen it a billion times in other music videos. It's boring and, honestly, seems kind of uninspired at this point. Everything else is quite nice. I enjoy the simplicity and I actually kinda like the smeared mascara.

I know this is an unpopular opinion but honestly for me one of the most cringey moments was when Avril released rock and roll. It was all so much uninspired and so wannabe "rock" that I was almost dropping the ball and I kind of felt that has a fan I was not really looking forward to what Avril was going to do next. Fortunately AL5 was not all bad... but rock and roll left a mark on me. I always felt that Avril was very natural each era but that one... everything was so plastic and cringey to me that I felt betrayed as a fan. Like all her persona was a scam. But now with all the distance I don't think like that anymore obviously.

I actually used to love RnR for a really long time (hence my avatar, which I really ought to change, lol). I thought it was fun and had a pretty cool, empowering message. Looking back, I'm not sure what was up with me, lol. Because by now, I do agree, the song is pretty cringey, uninspired, and even kind of unauthentic. And there's certainly nothing "rock and roll" about it. Weirdly enough, I personally still don't really see it as a wannabe-rock song. Probably because I feel it's aware of how cringey it is? It seems very tongue-in-cheek to me.
I'd rather consider "Bad Girl" a wannabe-rock song. The drums are so boring and repetitive. And the entire song seems to try really hard to be "creepy" and "edgy" and "shocking". It's pretty annoying. Which is quite a shame because I feel the song had the potential to be a lot better. Oh well...

The scene and the rnr attitude was so bad and unbelievable - I don't know if I wanted to laugh or cry. The whole era was off. It looked like she wanted to be a cool rock chick, but the whole scenario was forced, unnatural and so fucking lame. I almost gave up being an Avril fan.

...am I the only one finding RnR, its MV, and the Kimmel live performance all endearing? I understand the criticism, it isn't something you'll 'wow' at, it's not something one would say to be Avril's magnum opus or anything, but back then when it was released, it was a culturally relevant jab from a big name artist - music featuring (electric) guitars was in in severe decline, and the softer 'hipster' indie sound, EDM, etc. almost entirely replaced the dying pop-rock scene. Sure, she became very popish herself, but RnR was a nice little homage to the previous decades. The MV was rather cringy at moments and so was the Kimmel show, but sometimes occasionally I'm in the mood of submerging myself in the cringy, ridiculous sound and visuals, because in a way it's wholesome how she and others just went along and made a goofy and silly spectacle. Hell, on a few occasions when I really felt upbeat, I even started singing parts of the song I remembered to myself, as it has quite a catchy beat!

Speaking of "Rock n Roll"...
I think the whole Instagram feed idea was cool, but Epic poorly executed it which resulted in a very cheap looking lyric video. I know the budget was likely very small due to it only being a lyric video, but they could've done a bit more to liven it up. For example, they could've had the Instagram feed being scrolled through or switched to the profile, search, etc. tabs. Instead, the video is just a PNG image where the Instagram video and caption switch. I'm not sure if cringe is the right word to use here, but it was definitely an underwhelming video.

Lol, I actually completely forgot this existed! I remember wanting so badly to be a part of this, but I didn't have Instagram back then (well, I still don't...) nor did I have a device that supported Instagram. But a fellow fan from Twitter told me I could send them my entires and they'd post them on their Instagram. Unfortunately, for reasons I don't remember, this plan didn't work out and the fan couldn't post any of my entries. I was a tiny bit bummed tbh, but it was no big deal. And then, a few days later, when this lyric video was released, I was actually hella relieved that I hadn't been a part of this after all. This lyric video is so, so bad. I agree, the idea was nice, but the execution was a disaster. I watched it once and then never again. And that's saying quite something, seeing as I was in quite a fangirl phase back in 2013 and would surround myself with Avril pretty much 24/7. On top of all that, they didn't even get the lyrics right! I remember the lyrics to be used by us fans were posted to Avril's website, and one line said "we'll be getting out of this time one day". But the AL album booklet says "we'll be getting out of this town one day" which makes (a little) more sense.
AL era was just such a mess, especially the promo. It seemed like Epic really couldn't have cared less.

Cringey af and a direction I'd never like to see from her again. But a bop. I like it more than HTNGU. And that's the thing about Avril, she makes bops. Yeah some songs are terrible and should never have happened (HK) but we can still have fun to her songs and sing along. So I'll give her credit for that.

Wasn't the HTNGU lyric video also bad? I remember it had the lyric "Let's get in this truck" instead of "It's getting us drunk" lmao
I think what probably happened in both those cases is whoever put the lyric video together was probably given an old version of the lyrics so they could work on it while the song was getting finalized and they were never given the final lyrics.

"let's get in this truck"? I never noticed that. Maybe she thought she was writing a country song. Btw Bitchin Summer is like a bro country song. Idky but it gives me that vibe. So random, sorry. To go back on topic, I find it cringey for someone long out of high school to write songs like they were still high schoolers. It's just something I don't really enjoy listening to.
