1) UMS (love the dark atmosphere and the outfit)
2) GL (gorgeous and it shows a mature side so well)
3) TBDT (it represents the album perfectly, love the pose and I thought it was scissors in her hand before i realized it was her hair, mess lol)
4) LG (simple but iconic)
5) AL (too dark and her face is so weird, could've been so much better)
6) HAW (the worst one, so bland, I don't like the idea with the guitar hiding her body, the water seems fake and her toes..., I liked HAW single photoshoot more)

Exactly, there were so many better photos from the AL5 shoot they could have chosen for the cover. Though maybe that was the point, is that they specifically went with the most striking and dramatic photo because it would catch people’s attention. Still, I think they could have edited the photo better and not made the lighting so washed out, and they could have toned down the eyeliner.

I counted up y'all's rankings and made averages of the positions from 1 to 6, and the results are quite interesting in some regards;

Head Above Water 5,58
It's very interesting to me that GL is the favourite, and how much consensus there is that AL and HAW are bad; they literally always land on the fifth and sixth spot, lol.

1- Goodbye Lullaby. The photoshoot iteself is pure perfection to me. I feel like ANY of the photos of Mark Liddel and what he did with her during this era is amazing.
2- Under my skin. Even though I'm not a big fan of the album anymore, I still have a pure love for the dark mood of it.
3-The best damn thing. I like it but I was going to choose LET GO, but I find more interesting the album cover at some point. Maybe bc of the whole photoshoot and the different styles Avril appears on it.
4- Let go. I like it. It's simple and if you want to dig deep it seems there's a message hidden on the image. Who didn't wear a similar outfit during that era and pose like her just to feel like you were cool.
5- AL - I just can't match the content of the album and the cover. Maybe, just maybe if the majority of the tracks would have made the final cut..
6- HAW - That foot... she really had better pictures to choose as the album cover.

I never noticed her foot on HAW. The pic with just the foot looks like one of those crime scene photos. Terrible cover.

LG is dated but so are UMS and TBDT. But I just hate her ugly ass shoes and the pants are way too loose. Then the people and the car behind her. Meh. She looks so cute tho and I like the pose. So Avril Lavigne.

TBDT I love the pose and the blonde /pink hair. But the polka dot shirt is so dated if not it would be iconic. Did she not realize that that was a fad 😭

UMS ok this one is very 2000s too. But I like the goth look. And the red X is the perfect touch. I'm not crazy about the black and white vintage look to it tho but it really works for the full photoshoot.

GL is my favorite. She looks like Avril with the dark streeks. The nature, the colors, the piano, the dress are all lovely. It's also the only font that I actually like.

I liked the idea of the guitar for HAW because it's a more piano driven album and is the opposite of GL where she sits on a piano but the album is more guitar driven.

Chronological order for me, which is crazy because it should be the opposite, I mean the more you experience the more your covers should get better but well, it's Avril.
1. Let go is just beautiful, simple and effective with the people moving behind her
2. UMS has a nice darker tone
3. TBDT nothing special but at least she looks good.
then the bad things start to happen:
4. GL is great if we consider the atmosphere, the look, the make up, the hair, her face in general. but THAT picture with that horrible foot standing out and looking like a frog?!?!
5. AL. Why? Just why? What is the need of that perspective, those lights? Just no.
6. The editing is poor and someone already mentioned her foot. Her face also looks a bit strange, piggy (?), I don't know it's unnatural.

For those who haven't seen it: Just to let you know the Japanese Edition is just the normal standard edition cover. The Limited Japanese Edition is like the Limited Editions in a slipcover. Then this cover is the Japanese/Taiwanese Special Edition, and it came out in 2008, the only difference is between Japan and Taiwan is the obi strip, and maybe the barcode! I hope this clears up some confusion. |
