Anyone else on here seen the Netflix series Bridgerton? It came out quite some time ago, but I've only just watched it now on the recommendation of a friend. At first I thought I wouldn't like it so I avoided watching it, but after seeing how popular it was and people discussing it online, I got intrigued and watched the first episode and I was HOOKED!!!!
I'm normally not into period dramas or romances, but I really loved this series (never read the books). I'm really excited for the second season and apparently there is going to be a spinoff series as well.

I watched it some time back! I liked it too.
What do you think about the consent issue though? People bashed it a lot, and I think legitimately so.

I just read an article discussing that actually and I agree it was a pretty problematic scene. I can’t recall if it happened in the original book or it might have been even worse in the book, but they could have softened it for the show maybe. I don’t think it’s necessarily an issue that the scene was included, since consent really wasn’t a thing in those times and Daphne was still so new to the idea of sex, it’s also what led to the fallout/demise of their marriage so it kind of was an important plot point that needed to happen. However, they could have added a scene where they discuss why what she did wasn’t ok or something to that effect. To just completely gloss over it adds to the idea that white women can’t be held responsible for also committing acts of sexual abuse, or that r*pe doesn’t happen to men. And while the show comes with a TV-MA warning, they could have put a trigger/content warning at the start of the episode. I’m surprised they didn’t.

I haven't read the book, but I have read the scene in the book and its actually more problematic. I don't like it how they have ignored what she did. By not addressing it they are sending a wrong message to people. I also think that Daphne doesn't realise what she did was wrong and how wrong it actually was. It has made me question that many people don't even know or realise what constitutes as rape/ abuse. That can happen in real life too. I have seen many romantic troupes where the hero/anti-hero is harsh with the heroine, pulling close physically, holding tight etc. But then is it abuse or passion? (Especially hate turning into love couples) I guess, it is situational but many people make grave mistakes due to inexperience or they do not understand the impact. How should such a situation be dealt with then?

It was announced some time ago that he was leaving the show, mostly because the next seasons won’t focus on his character. Each season will be adapted from one of the novels and I guess each book focuses on a different character. So next season is going to focus on Anthony’s story.

So it seems like Simon will leave and Daphne will be a broken hearted weepy wife in the next season. I was hoping for some conversation.

That’s not the impression I got from what the articles have said. It sounds like Simon will still be present in her and their son’s life but he’ll just be referenced off screen, like I’m sure a character will ask where he is and she’ll say something like “He’s doing a tour in Europe right now” or whatever, something that will explain his absence, but it’s a temporary one. It sounds like Daphne’s role is going to be more involved with her family and child, but the focus is not on her story anymore. Divorces didn’t really happen in those days so it’s unlikely IMO that they’d make their characters split up, especially when they have a child together. That was a no-no back then.

I believe he will be most definitely raise his son, given what he had gone through. Yes of course divorce/ talaaq is out of the question as they weren't common those days. I meant he would sort of abandon her as his wife, which is something I'm not looking forward to. I would like their relationship to get over this; even if its real slow.

You think so? I really liked it. I just finished it over the weekend. But I haven’t read the book so maybe that’s why - a lot of people who liked the book said the show ruined it. I don’t think I liked it as much as season 1, but my friend and I agreed season 2 has more emotion and maybe better overall storyline. What did you not like about it?

I couldn’t even watch it completely. That bee sting scene was so damn funny 😂😭

The Queen Charlotte prequel series came out yesterday! I haven't had time to watch it yet but I plan to! From what I have seen so far it looks fantastic. Well written, well acted, well casted.
