Recommendation. Weapon by Against The Current also sounds like Misery Business. Also if you like this album maybe you'd like Hayley William's Flowers for Vases it's basically an adult version of this. It has the same trendy slow ballads with good lyrics and even some pop rock tunes although yeah not as in your face as Brutal and Good 4 u, just a little more subdued. A lot of fans hated Hayley's album tho so who knows, I think it's similar tho. Nice, will check it out. I didn't really like Flowers for vases though. Too mellow for me haha. The only song that I liked was Just a lover. Wishing Paramore won't follow this type of style in their upcoming album. It felt kinda like Taylor Swift's folklore, which I just can't listen to it again haha. I think it's more like Petals for Armor (also by Hayley) for me. Slightly more upbeat but not as upbeat as good 4 u and brutal.

I kept hearing the “like a damn sociopath” bit of good 4 u on Instagram and it got in my head so much ive just listened to the full song and I LOVE it. this is coming from someone who exclusively listens to avril, taylor, country and early 2000’s pop punk and hasn’t known anything in the charts for about 15 years lol
now I’m gonna walk round the house singing it as if I’m going through a rough break up when really my long term boyfriends in the next room x

I really like "Brutal" and "Good 4 U", although I can't stand "Drivers License". I haven't had a chance to check out the full album yet, but I'm hoping for some more pop rock songs. If not, I think it's a genre that Olivia should consider exploring more of.

I get it now. The comparison to Avril. It's the vibe or energy that Olivia puts in her rock song Good 4 u that reminds me of the fire Avril had when singing MHE or HW. You know that energy that made you feel the song in that moment. She's still not the new Avril though but I get the "Avril vibes" now at least on Good 4 u.

So I decided to listen to Sour yesterday and it wasn't bad. I expected it to be awful but I kinda liked it. Don't know if I would go back to this album but it was nice to know what the hype is all about and I didn't knew she wrote her own songs wich I give her credit for!

Gonna talk about how much I've grown to appreciate Olivia's music here because the discourse going on in the main thread bothered me. I'm come to really enjoy this album and appreciate Olivia's songwriting. It reminds me a lot of Taylor Swift's, I'm not gonna lie, but I do really enjoy it.
Traitor - this song will probably be my most played song of the year. Calling it now. I fell in love with this song. My emotions when singing along to this song ahh love it.
Deja Vu - I love screaming the chorus. First song I got attached to after my friends all started singing it and I didn't know a word lol now I do.
Jealousy Jealousy - Can I just say? I relate. I think we all an but my jealousy/FOMO gets a little out of control sometimes. Anyways a freaking BOP. Another one to sing along to.
Favorite Crime - I love how she sings it 😭
Happier - ^ the feel
All good songs, I'm ranking them on how much I like them atm.
Enough for you - 1 step forward, 3 steps back - driver's license (the chorus 💙) - Brutal - good 4 u - hope ur ok

There's a lot of good songs on SOUR, however I think they all sound a bit similar and cover mostly the same themes. But it's very promising for a debut album and being only 17/18 when it came out. She wrote all the songs with just 1 other guy I think so that's still pretty impressive to be writing like that at her age and on her first album.
The "driving home 2 u: sour film" is excellent by the way. I recommend checking it out if you haven't seen it, it's on Disney+. She performs the whole album in different settings and plays instruments. It's really excellent. She also talks about how she made the album. She is a fantastic vocalist and live performer. The fact her debut album won a Grammy shows how promising she is already.

I stumbled across this video on YouTube about all the millions Olivia Rodrigo is having to pay out on her first album for copying others. It's kind of shocking just how many ideas she seems to be borrowing from others, especially after her receiving so many awards. Don't know what else to say, but I'm kind of saddened by this. It's easy to dismiss a thing or two, but, well just watch the video.

Oh please. These copyright allegations are so stupid and being blown way out of proportion because she's a new artist that is having lots of success, and everybody wants a slice of the pie. The things she blatantly copied like "1 step forward, 3 steps back" she already got the necessary permission to use. The other stuff like "deja vu" and "good 4 u" are such small pieces of the melody that are similar to "Cruel Summer" and "Misery Business" that they're not even worth giving credit for. Olivia's team probably decided it would be the safest option to give credit to those artists to avoid lawsuits, not because they're actually similar enough.
Adam Levine is totally right about songwriting and it being nearly impossible to come up with something 100% original that isn't at least partially inspired by something else, whether it's intentional or subconsciously. I doubt she was purposely trying to rip off other artists' songs. Taylor's "Lover" is incredibly identical sounding to Avril's "Tell Me It's Over," along with "Come Back, Be Here" sounding nearly identical to "Wish You Were Here." Yet Avril never claimed copyright infringement on those songs. Ironically Taylor is being sued right now for copying lyrics of "Shake It Off" from a 3LW song (which is also ridiculous, as the lyrics she's being called out for are common phrases). When it comes to plagiarism cases, it's very rare that the person suing for infringement actually wins their case. There have to be enough obvious similarities for it to be a valid plagiarism case and most of the time there aren't. (Remember when Avril got sued for Girlfriend? The hook was noticeably similar and that still wasn't enough evidence to claim copyright).
The visuals are a separate issue, however I think pointing out the similarities in the cheerleading outfit is stupid, since that's such a common visual that has been used by many artists over and over again. Like... you don't own the rights to pom poms and a cheerleader skirt. (Avril did it with TBDT video, Taylor did it with Shake It Off, and Toni Basil did it before either of them). Taylor has also copied visuals, like the You Belong with Me video containing many similar elements of Avril's "Girlfriend", and her ringleader outfit from the Red Tour a clear inspiration from Britney's Circus tour and "Circus" music video. Yet nobody has ever made a stink about those and if Taylor were being sued, she'd probably fight very adamantly against it. Like come on, no artist is 100% original.

Honestly I have not a lot of exposure to plagiarism cases and I did think the whole boyfriend/girlfriend case seemed utterly ridiculous and hardly similar at all. But you seem well versed in knowing more about these types of cases like this. So I'll lean in to your take on this. So I guess I don't feel quite so disappointed by this I was just a initially little bit shocked when I first watched that video.

It sucks that she has to give song credits to Taylor for screaming like she did on Cruel Summer. Taylor can't take credit for screaming on a freaking song. But oh I was surprised that she also used New Years Day instrumental for Happier I think.
