Htng was definitely not a high light lol. Sorry, tho I did like Sipping on Sunshine. I hope #6 isn't a bunch of woe is me songs. If she is with the same label, who knows. And hopefully she won't over work the songs. She should have let "let me go" as a break up song instead of reworking it.

I think it'd be cool if she went more in the direction of Melanie Martinez and did something creepy. Hip-hop/Pop styled music would be cool to hear from her. Something different you know?

I'm not sure about the Melanie Martinez thing but I like that Cry Baby is a concept album and that each song has its own video. But honestly I don't see Avril doing anything like this. I feel like she isn't creative enough to ever do a concept album or create an album that tells a complete story from start to finish. I think you need to have a wide imagination to do that, like how Melanie created characters and an entire "world" for this story. I just don't see Avril putting in that much effort or thought to do something like that to be honest. She's never been artsy in that sense.

I didn't really mean a concept album. I just meant stylistically. That hip-hop/pop type songs Melanie has I feel would work well with Avril. If she infused some of her own style in it too, it could work. That's just me and my thoughts though.
At this point, as long as she doesn't make an AL or GL 2.0, I'd be happy.

I always envisioned Avril releasing something similar to "Fight Song" by Rachel Platten - a commercial pop song but with meaning. I hope that the lead single of album 6 is not another GF/WTH/HTNGU. I don't expect the sound of it to not be pop in some form or possibly a ballad like Fly, but I hope the subject matter is something more meaningful. After her well publicized battle with Lyme disease it would just look shallow to release another motherfucking princess party song. An inspirational song like KHO would be really good. But even if it ends up being about love or breakups per usual, that's still preferable for me over the party songs. Back in 2012 I was selling merch for Rachel when she was playing shows to like five people in tiny bars. My friend works for her, and still does, but Fight Song was just a chorus then. It's amazing to see where she is today. Rachel is really awesome.

Girlfriend was a masterpiece. No wonder it became one of the most successful songs of 2007 and the first video in history to have 100M views on YT. But, as Andrea said, that was a one-time formula. Ever since then, they've tried to reproduce that same effect again, but have failed enormously to achieve it. And it's all gone downhill: WTH was less successful than GF, and HTNGU was even less successful than WTH. There's no doubt she'll hit rock bottom if they force her to release another generic bland pop song. They should have learned their lesson by now, which is that GF 2.0 will never ever work. Her team is terrible, They've kept making her stick to the "motherfucking princess" persona since 2007, and it is not appealing to audiences. She should start off with a completely new one.New label and new management. That should do the trick, IMO. Agreed. And it fit the album, her style, her age, her fan base age, everything fit so well together. I listen to TBDT now and realize it's actually become my favorite of her albums. Her other two albums tanked because lead singles didn't match the album, her style and look wasn't what the lead single was, and then HTNGU and AL was just a mess. Great song, but not lead single worthy. I think her not winning a Grammy and then not being nominated for a Grammy for UMS/My Happy Ending or Girlfriend and TBDT hurt her confidence and drive overall as a writer and performer.

I disagree, to be honest. I don't think hip hop suits Avril at all. And when she goes overly pop like electro or bubblegum pop it doesn't really suit her either. I haven't heard a lot of Melanie's music so maybe if I heard it I would know what you mean but from what I have heard, I don't think the type of music Melanie does would suit Avril (thinking mostly of the song Cry Baby). Perhaps what you mean is more like alternative pop, in which case I do think that would suit Avril. Dark pop like Lorde, Lana del Rey, Melanie, yeah I could see it (think GYWYL, Hello Heartache) I'll be happy if whatever style she goes for on the album is consistent and the lead single is something new that represents the album well and that Avril is passionate about performing. When she's passionate about the songs, she performs them better and it makes it more enjoyable. If Avril doesn't enjoy the songs, no one else will either.

Great song, but not lead single worthy. I think her not winning a Grammy and then not being nominated for a Grammy for UMS/My Happy Ending or Girlfriend and TBDT hurt her confidence and drive overall as a writer and performer. While I agree that a large part of the reason for the failures behind GL and AL was the singles and image mismatch, I don't think that was entirely the reason why those albums failed. There was a severe lack of support from the label and I think in general her popularity has declined. The 4 year gap between TBDT and GL made a lot of fans lose interest in her, especially when the lead single was GF 2.0. The only chance I think she has of regaining any popularity at all is releasing a mature album with a mature image and trying to appeal to the AC market instead of teen pop, like Adele, but I don't think her popularity will ever be what it was from 2002-2007. We also have to consider the fact album sales aren't what they were in 2002-2007 either. IMO there's several reasons why her career is at where it's at and why her last 2 albums didn't do well, I don't think it can really be blamed on just 1 thing. I know that Avril wants to win a Grammy and I'm sure it might have come as a hard blow when she wasn't nominated despite having successful hits, but if something like that were to deter her confidence, she wouldn't have lasted in this business has long as she has. I'm sure it's nice to win awards but I don't think she cares about it that much. If anything has ruined her confidence or drive, I would completely blame it on RCA and Epic. The Grammys have nothing to do with it, as far as I'm concerned. RCA rejected Avril's vision of writing a personal album, songs that were very meaningful to her, that she mostly wrote by herself, and to have a label say they aren't good enough I'm sure hurt her a lot. Then Epic did the same thing, only this time I think it was worse because it came from a man she trusted that she has been with for her whole career, and to hear rejection from someone you respect and trust had to be hurtful as well. Both Avril herself and Chad confirmed Avril was lazy during the recording of AL and that Chad had to push her to do more vocal takes, etc. It doesn't surprise me that after experiencing this kind of rejection from labels over and over that it made her lose her drive and not want to do anything. She had been going in the business for over 10 years, working almost nonstop, plus dealing with all her personal issues like her divorce from Deryck, that would burn anyone out eventually. I think that's kind of why she said going through Lyme was almost like a blessing for her because it gave her some downtime and I think that's also why she is going very slow with album 6 right now because she seems to want to spend time at home and with her family a lot. I hope that having all these things happen to her in the last couple of years, Lyme, family time, seeing other performers, has reinspired her and given her her creative drive back and that album 6 will be a return to the Avril we knew from 2002-2007, in terms of her passion and creativity.
