Yungblud On His ‘Wild’ Collab With Avril Lavigne
December 7, 2022
Avril Lavigne and Yungblud joined forces for a collaboration. ‘I’m a Mess,’ the new pop rock ballad, came out at the beginning of November. Judging from his last interview with Audacy Music, this collaborative work was a crazy experience for Yungblud as he had the opportunity to work with a musician who had a significant influence on him in his teens.
“It’s actually been so crazy,” he replied when he was asked about his collab with Lavigne. “Like, I just think, you know, when you’ve heard someone’s voice for your whole life, they were literally on your bedroom wall… I first did it when I worked with Travis Barker for the first time, but like, when you hear Avril Lavigne, you’ve heard of your whole life, and when you hear a thing that words have come out of your head, that’s crazy. Yeah, I mean, it’s like beautiful and wild.”
He continued, reflecting on the process, “Yeah. We literally just went in for a session together, just like we just met, and we just went in for fun, and it came out and was recorded within a day.”
When asked if their plans were always in this style or if they were considering a different genre, the young singer replied that this song almost developed naturally. According to him, it was just related to how he listened to Avril Lavigne and how she affected him earlier. Yungblud noted, “I think it was just about like. If I was going to do a song with Avril Lavigne, it was always going to be a song like that because that’s how she touched me, right.”
The rocker went on to say Avril Lavigne touched his soul with her music. He shared, “She touched my spirit through songs like ‘Complicated’ and ‘I’m With You.’ And I was always going to write something emotional with it because I don’t know, it just felt, it just happened. I don’t know, it was like it’s got weight and it’s got substance, that song, and it means something, and it was sick.”
This song featured on the deluxe edition of Avril Lavigne’s album ‘Love Sux’ released last winter. Yungblud isn’t Lavigne’s only collaboration on this album, as she also collaborated with Machine Gun Kelly, Blackbear, and Mark Hoppus of Blink-182. In the sound and lyrics of the album, it is possible to hear emo-pop angst, a pattern in Avril’s early albums. The album has received good overall feedback, even becoming the singer’s highest-rated album.
Yungblud and Avril announced the album with a video at the end of last October, and in the video, the young star was cutting Avril’s hair. The teaser made quite a splash when it came out. In a short time, they dropped the song.
The paths of the duo had met before this song. On a live stream of Yungblud, Avril joined him in singing ‘I’m With You’ together. The chemistry between the two seemed pretty good. Yungblud’s admiration for the singer was evident even in his excitement at introducing her. In his last interview, too, it was pretty obvious how memorable this ‘wild’ ride was for him.
