Skylar Grey (Holly Brook).
Pop star, but she's also a hitmaker, one of the extremely talented songwriters in the current pop scene.
Avril and Skylar Grey have something in common - their latest albums both flopped. (Skylar Grey's "Don't Look Down", 2013 released, sold 0.3M)
However, unlike Avril, Skylar Grey is currently attracting wide attention from GP.

Funny thing is they actually did work together already back in 2010 before GL's release, Alex da Kidd produced.

That's before she debuted as Skylar Grey.... Must have collaborated with Avril purely as a hitmaker.
The songs they have collaborated must have been the songs Avril stated that had hip-hop influences. Am I correct?
So sad the songs were not released.

Yeah I think the songs they did together Avril said were either pop rock leaning and others more hip hop leaning.

The problem is that when she's been "suggested" to make pop songs (last two albums), the results haven't been too good because they aren't genuine. Complicated or Girlfriend (her biggest hits) were pop gold not only because the co-writers and producers did a better job, but also because she did her best and was excited to make those songs.Lately, she indeed doesn't seem to interested on making pop songs anymore, but at the same time she has still compromised and released half-assed pop singles who aren't as good as older ones and they weren't even that successful. I think it's better to let her do her thing and work from there, because if she releases what she REALLY wants from the start, I think it will all flow much better. Last two eras were messy (especially AL) because she had a concept for the album (even completed) and then the label(s) came with their "bureaucratic BS" and made her change it. If she doesn't really care about success/relevancy anymore and mainly about artistry and do what she likes, she should go for it , I'm sure she will still a solid fanbase that will support her and she might new fans, or regain some that left years ago.
Girlfriend? Yes, but Complicated?
Didn't Avril wanted to make a rock song rather than a pop rock song, and most importantly, what did she exactly do during the process of creating her debut song? Didn't Matrix control almost everything during the Let Go era?
If she doesn't really care about success/relevancy anymore and mainly about artistry and do what she likes, she should go for it.
That is the ideal future, but I doubt that she doesn't care.

I not only meant that she gladly made those songs from the start (more clearly on Girlfriend, of course), but also she did a good job to make the songs the hits they were and she was excited to promote and perform them, unlike other "hitmaker" songs like WTH or HTNGU that I personally don't think she really enjoyed. I don't think The Matrix neccesarily "controlled everything", in the sense of forcing her to do this or that, but they work with her to help her to create the "hit songs" she needed for her debut album since L.A. and Arista didn't seem to thrilled about her initial "rock album" idea she had started with Cliff Magness. There's always been a debate on how much influence/involvement Avril had on those songs, but I think in the end she had good time making, promoting and performing them. As for Dr. Luke and Girlfriend, I remember an interview where Dr. Luke's manager said that the "original" TBDT was pretty much finished but Avril needed a first single, so her manager contacted Luke's and hooked them up. She apparently had so much fun with Luke that they made more songs than they initially thought, and she scrapped some of the "original" songs to make room for Luke's songs, replacing Butch songs (some of them registered) and perhaps Chantal and more Rob Cavallo songs. I'm not too optimistic about that, either, but one can dream, I suppose

I listened to GF the other day and it occured to me that even though it's a fun, upbeat song it still has some quite heavy guitar and Avril sounds sort of... aggressive. I feel like she can sell her music better when she's being angry or aggressive or having some kind of attitude. Her past singles have mostly been playful and not as serious and I don't think she can sell it as well. She needs to be mad, irritated, confused etc

I wish she'd step away from working with the same producers/writers she's been working with since 2009 I wish she'd work with a new set of people who will focus on and work with Avril on creating a stylistically consistent record.

I agree but to be fair for this last album she did collaborate with new people such as Alex da Kidd, Skylar Gray, supposedly Pharrell Williams, and Bonnie McKee. Unfortunately none of their songs made the album. And Chad, David, and Martin Johnson were all new collaborators for her at that time. But I agree for next album is like to either see more self written songs or collaborate with some new people, maybe even a female for a change. I guess maybe we can expect Ryan Cabrera to be on this next one?

I wish she'd work with KMFDM, or Skold. It's probably delusional to think KMFDM would have anything to do with Avril, but I think their sound would be perfect for her. She should at least have a mainstream producer rip off their sound on her next album.

When it comes to releasing "rock" music, I would see her working with people like Rob Cavallo or Rick Rubin, at most. I think her "rock days" are long gone, and we would be like if she released something even comparable, a la Bad Girl.

I would love it if she'd work with John Feldmann. In the last few years he produced some great albums and he has great connections to other musicians too! For example he worked/is working with Andy Biersack on his solo album and brought Gerad Way, Patrick Stump, Rian Dawson and Ashton Irwin into the making of the album. He worked among other things with 5SOS, Good Charlotte, All Time Low, Sleeping With Sirens, Panic! At The Disco, Plain White T's and Boys Like Girls. I think with him Avril would go into a rockier direction and she'd have the chance to make music with some who are musicians as long as she is (GC for example) or she could work with younger bands like 5SOS who are great songwriters as well despite their age. And I'd like her to work with Simple Plan. I'm dreaming of this collaboration for years now and I hope one day they will work together.

He is pretty well known for rocky sonding songs that still have catchy hooks and can be radio friendly. It would be interesting for her and might satisfy everyone. Fans want songs that have a bit more depth to them and better production, the label wants catchy radio hits. Some producers don't match some singers no matter how good they are. They should try her with different people rather than just who's popular right now

Greg Kurstin, I like sound of songs he produced. He co-wrote Hello with Adele, produced the whole Sia's album, Pink's Try and True Love, Lily Allen's songs etc. It's like he has the ability to make even simple songs sound extraordinary.
