Has anyone watched this series? It's based on the book series by Jenny Han. I watched season 1 when it came out last summer and really enjoyed it enough to read the first book (there are some notable differences between the two but I enjoyed the book enough to want to read the others). They just announced season 2 today, every Friday starting July 14th!
I'd recommend the series if you like young adult rom-com/coming of age stories. It's basically about a teenage girl who realizes she has feelings for her 2 guy friends (who are brothers) that she has grown up with all her life and they have feelings for her as well. It's your typical coming of age story where she navigates puberty and growing up, etc., however I like that there are some modern changes to the storytelling. It's shot in a beautiful location in North Carolina I believe.

I just finished season 1. I like how they gradually escalated to the love triangle and revealed the big picture behind their personal lives. I'm not crazy about the pairings, mostly because they're brothers and I've always felt uncomfortable when that happens. But I am very fond of all the characters, including the moms. Actually, I really loved the moms (cries for redacted) and I'm glad it wasn't just the kids storylines. I feel bad for Conrad for going through all that and keeping it to himself. And Jeremiah when he found out and Conrad didn't want to talk about it then because he was with Belly. But then Belly found out and ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜
But the best part about this series has to be the soundtrack. And they picked some of my favorite Taylor songs too.

You’ll have to watch season 2 now and share your thoughts because it’s quite a departure from season 1. I have thoughts but I don’t want to spoil anything.

The summer element is dimmed for S2. Replaced by road trips/spur of the moment vibe. The overarching theme is still there but it's darker/sadder. I prefer the more relaxed beachy vibe of S1 and I'm not a fan of the flashbacks. I'm also feeling some type of way about the selling of the house. Yes, the characters come together for that reason but the rest of the storyline falls flat. Maybe it's because I love Kyra Segwick but I think they could have done more with her story. For example, establish a connection with Julia and Conrad and why they are both so grumpy while their siblings are sunshines being that they all grew up in that lovely house. I'll talk about the love triangle in another post. Let me hear your thoughts first, Bo.

But I think they did it that way because that’s how the book does it, I haven’t read it yet, but I believe that’s how it’s done. I don’t want to say too much as I’m not sure if you’ve watched the whole season and don’t want to spoil anything. I’ll just say the storyline about the house ends up becoming kind of pointless in the end and doesn’t really go anywhere. The addition of Skye was unnecessary, apparently they aren’t in the books, and the character was added. I don’t see much what value they really contributed, I honestly think the show added Skye for diversity points to feature a non-binary character because they didn’t contribute much else, other than maybe as a bridge between Julia and the kids. I didn’t get the chemistry between them and Cam either. Belly is annoying this season, she can’t make up her mind about who she wants to be with and it’s just frustrating, like pick a side already! Idk how you can sleep with one of them and then decide to date the other, like how is that not weird at all? I know many liked the storyline between Steven and Taylor this season but I just frankly didn’t get it. They tried hooking up in s1 and it didn’t work, Steven was all hung up on Shayla. Now suddenly we are supposed to believe he’s in love with his little sisters best friend, that he didn’t want last summer? Why does he suddenly do like a 180? It made no sense and I didn’t see any chemistry between them. S2 had its moments, especially concerning Susannah’s death, but it fell apart once the house storyline ended. S1 was so much more streamlined in the storytelling and overall writing. S2 just felt kind of all over the place.

I finished it. The last two eps dragged on and the Cousins house storyline was pointless. Why is it called Cousins anyway? They literally grew up like cousins 💀
Belly annoyed me too. She's not as bad as Bella Swan or Elena Gilbert but she's close to the latter. She's still too young. The scenes she made in public and at the funeral show it. I know it's ~2yrs between her & Conrad but he's jerking this girl around with his own problems. I hate that he always expects her to be there when he's ready. Same goes with how he treats his brother like he's fine cause he's the sunshine brother. But I mean he asked for his blessing so it's okay 🙄
And when Belly learns, she's like "if I would have known I would have fought for you" but then jumps into Jeremiah's arms 🤨 I understand she found her feelings for him and maybe she has moved on, but obviously Conrad still feels some type of way. I think Jelly are the better pairing rn, but I wonder how things will turn out. Especially when he finds out they did it and at the house!
I just hate that they're brothers and they're going through the worst time of their lives and have a lot of unresolved issues and they're so young and are in the middle of a freaking love triangle while grieving. This time should not be spent fighting over Belly and I wish someone told them the old sayings, "if you love them, let them go. If it's meant to be, it'll come back."
But the parents are oblivious and I don't want to judge Laurel but her insecurities and her grieve over Susannah is really affecting her parenting. Susannah was dying but she was backing the messed up rs between her oldest and Belly when she knows her youngest also has feelings for her and isn't all sunshine and rainbows like everyone else seems to think of him. Steven too.
I liked the rest of the characters but yeah they seemed to just put people together.

Yes that was my thought about the house storyline, they spent probably half the season on whether or not the house will be sold, then she sells it, then decides to back out of the deal, so it's as if it was never sold. I mean, what was the point of dragging that on just for basically nothing to happen?
I believe Cousins is a real place, I don't think it has anything to do with the fact they grew up like cousins lol
I read the summary of the books on Wikipedia so I know basically how it ends and who she ends up with, but I agree her and Jeremiah are the better pairing. They are classic best friends and the chemistry is just there. I get she feels a certain type of way about Conrad and he has always been there for her in a certain way and loved her/cared for her, but they have no chemistry! At least in s1 they really didn't at all, then suddenly in s2 they do. And yeah he is too emotionally unavailable all the time, each time Belly says she's done with him only to come back to him again. I guess maybe that's the point, that she loves him in a way she never will with Jeremiah, but ugh girl, have some self respect! I don't get what either of them sees in her either, like I get because they all grew up together it's natural to develop romantic feelings when older, but the fact they are both in college going after a high schooler is ick. Her and Jeremiah is a little more believable since I think they're only 1 year apart. Also why would you want to date her knowing your brother is into her? Ew!
I plan to read the second book soon just to see how it compares to the show and what they did differently. The first book was radically different and I preferred the way the show did it to the book.

Yeah she loves Conrad like she doesn't Jeremiah but maybe it's because he's her childhood crush. She's built him up and she now knows how it went. Except, I don't believe she's really over him and there will always be something there and that's why you don't go for his brother.
And yeah I don't know what they see in her either. It's probably their co-dependent relationship and because she's suddenly pretty. The likelihood of them having a crush on each other at some point in their lives is high but with the current events things are just heightened. Like I don't believe Jeremiah would be so butthurt if it wasn't her brother suddenly falling for her. He did not seem like he had it this bad for her until he saw them almost kiss. And totally the chemistry will Conrad wasn't there in S1. I don't even believe he has real feelings for her. He's just a little bitch rn
I just checked in on the books and WOW

I’ve finished season 1 and have watched 1 episode from season 2, it’s quite enjoyable. But she must make up her mind about the brothers. And the flashbacks and present time is a little confusing when you start with season 2, like so apparently Susannah passed away while I just saw she would do the trials for her sons… so apparently she didn’t make it..

Yeah season 1 ends with her saying she’ll do the trial but in between that and the start of s2 she passes away. The second book I believe is also told in flashbacks so that’s why they decided to do it that way.

I’m currently in the middle of reading the book. So far it is told pretty much how it happens in the show, I think they added some scenes in the book that the show didn’t have but they aren’t consequential to the story. There are some subtle differences, like the way she discovers the infinity necklace is by going through his desk drawer and not that it was just sitting on top. And in the books it’s never stated what Belly’s mom does for a living, so there’s no plot point about her writing a memoir about Susannah. I haven’t gotten to the point yet where Aunt Julia comes in, but I’m pretty sure I heard Skye is not in the book.

Forgot to mention some other things that are different in the book. Taylor's boyfriend is named Davis instead of Milo and I don't think he's in a band like in the show. There is no storyline (at least yet) about her and Stephen. Cam Cameron also doesn't appear at all. The book also moves at a snail's pace, I am over 200 pages in and still no Aunt Julia yet. I think the show might have done a bit better job moving the story along and making it more interesting.

I just finished the second book in the series last night and it was fine, but I think the show was more developed (this is also how I felt about the first book/season). Aunt Julia and Skye are not in the book and instead it’s Conrad and Jeremiah’s dad who wants to sell the house. The runner about selling the house is over and done with a lot quicker than in the show. I think I understand why they brought Aunt Julia and Skye in just to add more depth and find a way to create more conflict that would end in a more satisfying resolution. The way the book handled it was relatively anticlimactic.
