It’s taken 23 years for her invite to Worthy Farm to arrive, but there has definitely never been a better moment for her to show what she has always been about than right now. From the opening sass of ‘Girlfriend’ to the heart-wrenching grit of ‘My Happy Ending’, she looks and sounds every bit of the superstar that she is.
Covering all bases across her musical journey, and receiving rapturous singalongs from the tens of thousands assembled to witness, it is a celebration of the past as much as it is a long overdue party. ‘Bite Me’ and ‘Love It When You Hate Me’ offer a pristine insight into her most recent chapter, whilst an emotional ‘I’m With You’ and spritely ‘Here’s To Never Growing Up’ remind everyone that she has had this mastered for a very long time.
As ‘Sk8er Boi’ sees things off with the sort of bang that not many can achieve, there’s a real sense of this being a moment instantly written into the sprawling scriptures of this illustrious festival. A solid reminder that alternative music will always have a place in contemporary culture and a sure fire way to ensure that this won’t be the last time that Avril Lavigne gets to visit here. Utterly sensational.
