In order to keep track of my PC building progression, I decided to make a little table going as far back as I can remember. I will be sure to update it every time I upgrade a part. Some upgrades are merged together or fuzzed to make the table more compact.

Is this a legit Samsung 840 series SSD? I ripped it out of a Thinkpad which was being upgraded to a 750GB SSD.It is a legit Samsung SSD. An OEM one, to be exact, installed in Lenovo Thinkpads. I connected it to my PC and ran CrystalDiskMark, it's a good deal faster than my HyperX 3K and is about as fast as an 840 EVO, so I'll just call it an 840 EVO. Since it's also 256GB, I cloned my drive onto it. Only downside is that it is ugly Not good when your case has SSD mounts designed to show them off. I'm going to see if I can rip the guts out and place it inside the housing of my HyperX.

i7 for the price of an i3.

I found one too. Must have been 2011-ish. Note the 'ghetto' cooling solution*, ancient 5:4 monitor, lavish furnishings and general untidiness. *Why the floor fan was pointed at the HDDs is anyone's guess.

When you have to format some hard drives but are too lazy to install them properly and also too poor for an external 3.5 inch enclosure.

When you have to format some hard drives but are too lazy to install them properly and also too poor for an external 3.5 inch enclosure. I built my current desktop about four years ago. For a variety of reasons, the side covers have been on for only about six weeks. At the moment, I have a four inch case fan that sometimes makes noise. The fan has four LEDs that are the only indication the power is on (unless the fan is making noise). I have a replacement fan, without the LEDs sitting right next to the computer. I plan to replace the noisy fan. But, anytime I feel motivated to make the swap, it runs silently. When I'm in the middle of something that can't be interrupted is when it makes the most noise. Can't you use a fan curve to make it run silently all the time? Unless the fans are connected via molex that is.

I know two definitions for "fan curve". Neither of which would be useful in this situation. So, I guess I don't know what you mean. I think he means using software such as SpeedFan to stop the fan going beyond a dictated RPM, thereby making it quieter. I believe it has an autostart option. A good philosophy. On a related note, sometimes my video card fans briefly spin at full RPM when I restart my machine. Don't know why it happens, don't care tbqh. I chalk it up to a little electronic ritual that EVGA implemented.

Intel 7th generation Kaby Lake was just released. Minor stock clock increases across the board. Apparently the i7-7700k can easily reach 5GHz (with a stock clock of 4.2GHz and a boost clock of 4.5Ghz, there isn't much room left! ). Otherwise, very minor improvements. In other words: The unlocked i3 costs around $160. Why not spring for a better performing i5 at that point? I think I'm going to stick with my BCLK overclocked Skylake i3. Maybe I could pick up a used 6600k or 6700k for cheap from people dropping their Skylakes for Kaby Lakes. Hoping AMD Zen sends Intel running with a 6900k-killer at around $500 and a 6700k-killer at around $250.
