Her new single Focus just came out today as well as music video.
What do you think? Personally it sounds like a poor man's version of Problem to me. Catchy, but a bit unoriginal at this point for her. It's clear they knew Problem was such a huge success so they just used the same beat, same formula, even an annoying guy in the chorus. The "chorus" really ruins the song for me. There's nothing to it at all except some guy screaming FOCUS AWN MEH!!!! in this ridiculous voice. It sounds really cartoonish.
The MV is ok, but a bit trashy IMO. The crawling around on the floor, feeling herself up, licking lips, flipping her hair around, etc. are just a bit much. It's like stripper moves. Personally I think Ari can be cute, like how she used to be in her Nickelodeon/Yours Truly days, or she can be sexy without being trashy IMO. I hope the rest of her album is better than this. It's an ok song, but it just sounds like what she has already done. I want to see evolution.
Has anyone tried her new fragrance Ari? I smelled it at ULTA, to me it just wasn't anything super special. It smelled a bit cheap, like it is marketed towards her kid fans, and IMO not worth the $60 they're charging for it.
ETA: Forgot to mention I hate that platinum/gray hair on her. It just looks terrible and makes her look like a little old lady or something.

The chorus would have been better with those trumpets after the second chorus playing and Ariana doing the "focus. Focus on me" Singy bit she does durring the current chorus.
But I agree. It's trying to be problem.
It's a catchy but okay song.
I haven't smelled her perfume but I hear it's gourmand? With that marshmallow note.

The song is pretty similar to Problem, even in the way that it's constructed, not to mention it has a nameless male singer singing a little part throughout the song just like Problem. The song isn't anything special or attention grabbing; I don't even think it's up to par with the current pop hits - and depending on who you ask, that says a lot.
As for the video, it's kind of boring and unoriginal. And I think the purple hair is unflattering on her.

It's trying to be problem. It's a catchy but okay song. I haven't smelled her perfume but I hear it's gourmand? With that marshmallow note. Yeah it sort of has a marshmallow-ish scent to it. You'd really have to just smell it to know what it's like. It was fruity and sweet but IMO nothing super special. Like I said, targeted towards her kid fans. All the reviews of it I saw on YouTube were from like 12 year old girls raving about how great it is. I hate the ad campaign as well, with her doing that stupid duck face thing. The actual commercial is cute though. |

I've heard the song and I think it is quite good. And I also don't mind the similarities with Problem. What annoys me is the random guy screaming in the middle of the song. I'm wondering how did they think putting him in the middle of the song was ever a good idea. The music video is nothing really special, even though it wasn't bad at all. I also think that that hair colour doesn't suit her at all and it looks like she wore too much makeup. But other than that, I like the song. It's catchy.

Yes her hair had become so damaged from having to dye it for her role on Victorious for so many years. I guess the ponytail disguises the damage or whatever. Her hair looked good on the AMAs though and what a fabulous performance she gave. Anyone who doubts her talent and why she's so popular needs to see it IMO. |
