So the HTC Vive is now available, and the Oculus Rift and Playstation VR are on their way. Virtual reality is hardly a new idea (just Google it), but I guess now is the right time to talk about where this technology is at in 2016. I'm starting this thread from an odd perspective, as I've never worn a VR headset. But I find it very interesting, both from a technological standpoint and a social one. If you're stuck for something to say, here are some questions to help:- - How do you feel about VR? An expensive gimmick and a one-month wonder, or something that could really catch on?
- If you've worn one of these headsets, or a development kit, how was it? Was it awesome, or did you feel sick and dizzy after 10 minutes? Would you want to wear it for several hours straight?
- How do you feel about the social, or rather anti-social aspect of wearing a VR headset? How do you think this will affect its success?
- What about the 'serious' applications of this technology, e.g. medical training? Do you think the future of VR lies not in games and fun, but in more practical areas?
ETA: Yes yes, everyone who knows what VR is knows what virtual porn is, but let's not drag this thread into the gutter.

As far as regular people/the entertainment bracket is concerned, the startup cost will initially hamper the success of VR. The PlayStation VR - the cheapest of the 'big three' - will cost £350 in the UK. That's more than what the actual PS4 costs. It doesn't matter how much of a mind-blowing experience it is, I think it will be a few years before every home has a VR headset.

I think VR is the next generation in gaming. Games nowadays are getting so realistic that the only way to effectively increase their realism is to view them like you are actually there with a VR headset than with a 2D monitor. The closest thing I've worn to a VR headset was the Google Cardboard. I used it to simulate being in an Avril concert by watching concert videos with it. I'm definitely going to buy the HTC Vive in the future, but, that $800 price tag though. I would need to upgrade my computer as it cannot handle VR at all, according to system requirements. There are already some sweet looking VR games on Steam. Some games, like Elite Dangerous, already have VR compatibility. I can't wait until I can feel like I am in my very own Python. The technology is still expanding. Maybe one day we will be able to simulate being in a 2003 Avril Lavigne concert... If someone can transport a 4k 360° camera back to 2003 that is. To anyone on the fence, I recommend waiting. Prices will eventually drop and revisions with improvements will be released. That being said...

There's definitely something there- it has potential to be the next big thing for sure, but right now I don't think it won't be in most homes for a few more years- It'll get there eventually. Just not yet.

Apparently there is a HTC Vive competitor known as the OSVR which has similar specs to the Oculus without the bullshit DRM and with half the price of the Vive at $400. Motion controllers and sensor boxes have to be third party. I might get it instead of the Vive unless there is no support for SteamVR games. I am completely forgoing upgrading to high end monitors for VR instead.

I'm not convinced anyone will want to wear a headset for several hours straight.
Does anyone remember all the hoopla about hands-free gaming a few years ago? Turned out that people play games to relax, and they don't want to wave their arms around like a lunatic. If VR headsets aren't super comfortable - anecdotal evidence suggests they're not - then I can't see them replacing monitors as the convention.

I tried the Oculus Rift only for a couple of minutes but I found it extremely interesting. I didn't feel dizzy but my colleague did, and the graphic also has lots of potential to be improved but overall it was great to see what's possible. I'm not really into current gaming as I prefer the old Nintendo stuff but I can see that this will def change the gaming business. Can't wait until VR will be used for movies etc. Though it might take another 3-5 years.

Granted, there's a looooooong way to go before games are indistinguishable from reality, if that's even possible (or necessary!). But out of all the reactions to VR this is a new one to me. Either you have impeccably high standards, or someone was doing something wrong. Can I ask what game was being demoed, and what kind of computer the headset was plugged into, if you know?

Maybe because I'm not so crazy about gaming, so I wasn't that enthusiastic when I tried the Oculus. The demo wasn't gaming but a simple situation (concert in a church) and unfortunately I have no idea what it was plugged into. I also have to say that I focused on the sound and the sound experience. But it was very impressive

Aren't "audiophiles" those people who fall for nonsense like this?:- www.pearcable.com/sub_products_anjou.htmtl;dr Two grand for an audio cable. No shit. I'll bet their refund policy is.... interesting.

It's not audio, but on the topic of snake oil cables that reminds me of this: Thankfully the Vive doesn't require "dna-helix oxygen-free copper" cables.

Since we probably aren't going to be seeing Avril live anytime soon, this is the closest one can get to experiencing Avril live. Just need to get an HTC Vive to up the immersion even more.
