The difference though is that Avril was still in the public eye in 2005-2006, she didn't finish touring until late 2005, then made headlines in 2006 with her wedding, plus she had a couple movie roles with Over the Hedge and Fast Food Nation. In 2009 she laid pretty low except when she made headlines for her divorce, then in 2010 she was nowhere to be seen except when she released Alice. There's also the fact that artists like Katy, Kesha, Taylor, Adele, etc. did not exist yet in 2005-2006 but by 2009-2011 there were so many other big pop artists around and it created a lot of competition. She chose to do a non commercial album at probably the most inopportune time in the music industry. I'm sure you're right about GL being overshadowed by the competition and I see what you mean about her pubic presence in those days, but she wasn't exactly living under a rock between TBDT and GL. There was TBDTour in 2008, Abbey Dawn was in full swing between 2008 and 2011, and the media and paps were all over her throughout those years (Deryck, divorce, Brody etc).

I think the label didn't help her with GL not just becaue they were a large part of the reason it was pushed back but because (and this probably sounds bad) they released upbeat songs like WTH and Smile which were less personal when everyone knew she had just gotten divorced and was probably expecting something personal and emotional. They could have capitalised on her divorce. Up until then people expected songs about her life and most of the album was about that but the general public never got to say it
