There were reasons RCA found Max Martin for her. I don't understand that I Love You wasn't made it to the single choice. I think it is one of the strongest material from the album. My rank:
I Love You Wish You Were Here Not Enough Remember When

Woo hoo, it's GL's 10th anniversary today!!! (Not in the U.S. and some other countries, but here in Germany and other countries of the EU it was released exactly 10 years ago.)
Gosh, I can't believe it's been 10 years, an entire decade! I still remember holding the CD in my hands for the first time so well. It was a Friday, and I was supposed to be in school, but I remember not feeling too well, so I debated with myself whether I should go to school or stay home. But since I knew GL was about to arrive with the post, I decided to stay home. I'd pre-ordered the deluxe edition (or rather, my mum pre-ordered it for me - I was too young back then to legally be able to order stuff online), and it arrived some time before noon. I still remember opening the little package and then removing this protective foil from the CD case, and then just staring at it, taking in its beauty, then flipping through the booklet and breathing in this weird "new" smell, haha. That's the moment I remember best of receiving the CD. I still think GL probably has the prettiest album cover and overall design, the standard edition as well as the deluxe one. I still love just looking at it, even though I rarely do it nowadays. And every time I pick up the album, this fond memory of first holding it comes back to my mind. This is so sappy, haha!
The entire GL era is also the era I am most fond of. I became a fan of Avril during TBDT era, so GL was the first album of hers I got to look forward to. I was also deep in a fangirl phase then; half my life revolved around Avril, lol. I think it was also around this time that I first picked up a guitar and started getting piano lessons, so I could play along to Avril's songs. Then, in September of the same year, one of my biggest dreams came true and I got see Avril live. And I think it was also that same year that Abbey Dawn finally got its own website and started shipping worldwide, meaning I finally got to purchase some AD stuff. Really, it was mostly during GL era that my Avril collection went from 3 albums to a whole bunch of things from her perfumes to Abbey Dawn to songbooks, to calendars etc.
There's really barely any negativity I remember from GL era (once it finally started, that is). Sure, the Abbey Dawn promotion was rather over the top, there were interviews where Avril seemed to care way more about AD than about music. But she always seemed very passionate, her performances were great, and the aesthetics were amazing.
Of course, years later, I started noticing GL's musical flaws, the rather weak production and songwriting, but despite that / due to all the things mentioned above, this album will probably always have a special place in my heart.

I agree. It's crazy to think how different life was 10 years ago and where we all were when it came out! I was in my senior year of high school at the time and I remember listening to the album on the bus ride home after a class trip to London in April of that same year. I had been a fan of Avril's since the LG era but GL was the first era I got to follow as it happened in real time. I had stumbled upon Bandaids in 2009, so about a good year before GL actually came out. I remember it was fun reading all the fan theories about titles, songs, etc. (Remember Pink Crust? ) I remember one of the most fun bits about that era was the WTH.TV videos, it such a cool way for Avril to interact with her fans and let us see what she was up to all around the world. I don't think social media was huge yet, it existed, but not nearly in the same way as it does now. I think we had Twitter but no Instagram yet. There wasn't as much immediacy and spontaneity with social media as there is now, so vlogs like this would be sort of obsolete now when she could just upload Instagram stories in real time. I don't remember much about the actual experience of buying the album or the day it came out, I'm sure I went to the store after school and bought it (deluxe edition), probably from Walmart. I also remember a week or so before the album came out that clips of each track leaked and someone compiled them all in a YouTube video, I had that video on repeat forever until the album's release haha

"Pink Crust" yeah, lol! I remember the most popular German teen magazine "Bravo" printing a small piece about that very rumour, except they "failed" to mention that it was a rumour, and instead sold it as fact. They used to do that kind of stuff all the time. I think I even still got a special High School Musical edition that had several pages of info about the third movie (before it was released), including track lists and even full lyrics. Turns out none of this was even remotely true. But this is off topic, lol...
The way I remember it, those WTH.tv videos / vlogs from celebrities were something rather unique back then? But maybe it was just me, living in a bubble where no other celebrity but Avril mattered, haha. Either way, I really loved them, too, they felt quite personal and special. Which, btw, also reminds me of that virtual autograph session! Anyone remember that? I still wish she'd do that again, because I wasn't lucky enough to get an autograph that one time. (Gosh, that iPad looks so outdated, and it's sooo slow! lol)
As for the leaked tracks, I remember that too! I'd listen to them several times a day before the album release. Then, when I finally got the record, I realized that I'd not only been listening to a low quality version of the leaked songs, but a slightly pitched version, too!

I also listened to GL on the bus home from Grad night my senior year lol. I remember giving an ear bud to my friend, a fan, but she hadn't heard Avril was back. It's funny because to me it was a huge deal. My first real era being a fan. I first started my obsession through GF even tho I loved Comp.,MHE, SB. But I was still kind of late to TBDT. So I waited years to finally have her back.
I think I first illegally downloaded it but it wasn't long before I saw it at Target. I remember the register girl asked my sister if it was for her (she was paying). I still don't understand why the girl asked. I was shy about it but not ashamed of getting my CD. Since it was the first album I had of her. It's still very special. Every once in a while, I just stare at the pic and open the booklet. It's so pretty. It's my favorite booklet.
I haven't played GL in a very long time tho. But it was very special to me. The songs really helped my anxiety for a long time. I remember my faves when I first heard it were Push, WTH, Smile, and WYWH.

Happy ten years of Goodbye Lullaby! The first album I've been to its shows. Goodbye Lullaby Album Launch Showcase and The Black Star Tour. Great acoustic-leaning album. Before its release, rumours say she didn't even want any electric instruments in.

I remember I had to work at the vet back then and I didn't want to go to work cause about half an hour before work started the cd fell on my doormat and I wanted to listen to it so badly. I think I listened to the first 3 songs or so and then had to break it off. But I loved that album immediately.

I do really think that Avril was planning to incorporate MUSIC BOX SOUND into every songs of Goodbye Lullaby which serve as the trademark sound of it since that music box is related to lullaby but unfortunately her original ideas were scrapped but we can still hear some of these fragments in tracks such as "Black Star" (all throughout), "Push" (In the chorus when she said, 'Baby this is love, Baby this is love'), "Not Enough" (first part of the verses), "Gone" (all throughout the Chorus), "Complete Me" (Verses), "Goodbye" (Bridge) & "I Love You" (chorus)
The self titled album has also trademark sound like VOICE DISTORTION since that it is common in party songs which were common during the era and i think they adapted it in the album. We can hear this in tracks such as "Here's to Never Growing Up" (autotune chorus), "17' (autotune chorus), "Bitchin' Summer" (autotune), "Let Me Go" (distortion at the end of the song's post chorus), "Bad Girl" (echo-sound voice all throughout), "Hello Kitty" (glitchy japanese lyrics), "Sippin' On Sunshine" (autotune), "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" (distorted bridge), "Hello Heartache" (distorted bridge).
In Head Above Water, the trademark sound is the FINGER SNAPPING which i think is related to "Snap out of it" since that the album is about survival. You can hear this in tracks such as "I Fell In Love With The Devil" (pre chorus), "Crush" (all throughout) "Goddess" (chorus), "Bigger Wow" (all throughout), "Love Me Insane" (all throughout), "Don't Stop" (pre-chorus), "Break It So Good" (pre-chorus) & "Bright" (verses to pre-chorus).

Although your assume about "Lullaby" and "Music Box sound" make sense, I don't see she wanted to go for straight Music Box sound at least through "Complete Me" and "Gone" instrumental where she originally wanted to include in the album but somewhere in between folk and country was actually her true direction with little bit of electronic guitar following all those loud acoustic and string arrangement. I still embarrassingly notice that she tried to take her fans back in Taylor Swift's from entirely leaving her significant folk sound in most of the The Best Damn Thing behind deapite she sincerely want to be back to her root. Therefore, Butch Walker was so amazing by adding accordion in SST which rarely heard from pop album

Goodbye Lullaby was the last CD I think I bought at Zellers (Canadian department store chain) before they all closed. My brain likes to keep pointless personal trivia drilled into me lol.

DID THEY CHANGE THE TRACKLISTING??
I owned the physical album and clearly remember Alice being LAST. It’s listed as track 12, after Darlin and before Remember When & Goodbye on streaming now?

It is sad that many people hate this album very much. The album has some bad songs but also has many very good and emotional songs.
