The battle between smile and push was so stupid tho like, she literally had WYWH there, debuting on hot100 ORGANICALLY and did nothing about it. The MV was so big on youtube, and that with the era dead as hell, now imagine if it was the second single. GL was so misrepresented. An album full of ballads with 2 upbeat songs leading the campaign, a big mess. Weaker choices or not, at least her last 2 albums were represented by the right songs. Choose the two first singles carefully, Avril 🙌

Smile would be a fantastic song if its verses didn’t sound like they were written by an 11 year old. The problem with GL is absolutely nothing on it was single material.
I think TMIO was fine as a second single, just again nothing on that album was really destined to smash. RNR.. meh. It’s not great but again not much on that album really was great and how do you even begin to represent such a mess of an album? LIWYHM however was the worst choice ever, literally picked the worst song on the album as the second single.

I remember that poll as well; I actually randomly think about every now and then, lol. I loved both "Smile" and "Push" back then, but I voted for "Push" and added in the comments that "Smile" should be the third single.
I still like both songs, but the choice for the first two singles was indeed ridiculous, especially the second single choice. WTH charted well enough AFAIR, and it was and is kind of a bop, but why have it follow by a single that sounds so similar? When neither song is representative of the album in the first place? I guess the label was really desperate to recreate the hype that "Girlfriend" got....
If I hadn't been a fan, I probably would have expected the album to be full of "Girlfriend 2.0" kind of songs. It's no wonder the album wasn't such a success. (The single choices certainly wasn't the era's/album's only flaw, though, but I'm sure it highly contributed to the - in comparison to her previous albums - poor album sales).

A little off topic, it sucks the climate in mainstream music at the time didn't allow for pop rock music. Idk what was their fascination with making Avril pop at the time tho. She failed miserably and didn't even try. I believe if GL had a few pop rock songs it would be more of a classic today. But I still can't find it in myself to write it off as it was the one album I played a lot, because it was my first and only CD for a while. My life without Spotify was rough lol

I always like SMILE more than PUSH. But if there's a song that should be made as Single#3, it should be REMEMBER WHEN.
But again, if single#3 is ballad, 3/4 singles from that album will be a ballad. Because after single#3 she released GOODBYE as the last single. But it's very dead compares to SMILE.
And btw I just found out GOODBYE is a soundtrack of JACK N JILL (2011) movie, along with ALICE she had 2 movies songs in an album.
GOODBYE could've being Avril's biggest ballad, but I don't really know what really happened cause I was still 14 back then and a new fan. I think GOODBYE is in the same league as Evanescence's MY IMMORTAL.
And since WISH YOU WERE HERE & GOODBYE music video, we barely see Avril's emotional acting again. Even HEAD ABOVE WATER music video can't make me cry.

I love movies and obv Avril, , so eventually. img onna have to rewatch that godawful movie for the 3rd time to hear those 2 songs. Hate 2 amazing songs are int hat unfunny trah fucking movie. Also hate that the first time i heard Goodbye was in...that movie. First proper time was when i was a fan 11 years later and heard it so take that Adam sandler and Jack & Jill. Goodbye is incredible though i agree her vocals outstanding. Also about her emotional acting.... i wonder if we will get a music video of a song about a certains omeone and she will get emotional and its real emotional.... Dont know we should see. Id love to see her dip her toes in acting again.

Goodbye was not released as an official single from the album, she just made a music video for it. So that is probably one of the main reasons why it went nowhere, but tbh I don’t think it would have done well on radio at all. Not in 2011 when stuff like Lady Gaga was the popular thing. Goodbye is nicely produced and performed but so blandly written. It’s no IWY as far as her ballads go.

Goodbye doesn’t even come remotely close to My Immortal imo lol. It’s even more repetitive than WYWH. Her worst ballad by quite some way.

I always liked Goodbye because it felt personal like she was saying goodbye to he rmarriage with Derryck and wanting him to be ok and still cared for him. It felt like a personal letter to him.

I’m from Slovakia and I remember that time when GOODBYE music video was released one of the biggest radio station Europa 2 was asking people on Facebook if they want add song to radio playlist but lot of people commented it’s too slow and song is too much in lullaby sleeping vibe for playing when you drive. Dunno it is how it is I mean with bigger push more her songs can be more on spot light but she missed opportunity. GYWYL - Fifty Shades of Grey, Bad Girl - Suicide Squad/ Harley Queen, Dumb Blonde - Barbie, It Was In Me - Frozen 2 I Love You - as a Valentine single with nice music video LOVE SUX - as an Anti-Valentine single with music video!!! I think exist much worst songs which are produced or written more simple way but are just catchy and had big push or crazy/original/big music videos what makes them successful. And In my personal experience lot of my friends speaks different languages as is English so they don’t even pay too much attention what’s Artists say or mean with the lyrics just they like it because is catchy. So even not the best songs but she could and still can (see Taylor) make them shine/ give them second breath/ make more streams/ raise more money …everything is different today than 10 years ago and is never too late even it wont be Grammy thing or biggest radio hit but still can improve those streams and bring her back to audience. I think that’s why Taylor is still where she is because she remembering to people hey I’m still here and don’t let them get bored from long breaks. Today is all about streaming don’t have to perform everything live when it’s release. Just feed the audience. While you preparing new stuff ..use your old one
+ People going crazy around Halloween as well IFILWTD / BITE ME have such a Halloween vibe for some merch or promo that time and she love that period of the year so it’s need just more creativity

Fifty Shades being a huge success and a fanmade video for Bad Girl using clips from Suicide Squad got like 40 million views on youtube in a very short amount of time... It really was a waste. On the other hand, taking into consideration the allegations against Manson today, it is better that BG stayed under the radar.

I kinda get why the label had her make at least two upbeat songs as a way to compromise. After all, WTH was the biggest thing from GL at the time. Even if Avril had gotten her way and was able to make the entire album the way she wanted and release the singles she wanted, that album would not have performed well at all. At the time I was on Avril’s side because I wanted her to have the freedom to make what she wanted, but looking back, I get why the label wanted her to go back to the drawing board….

I think they could have at least tried to find singles that still represented the album though. If they wanted to go with something more generically pop, what would have been wrong with WYWH as the lead? WTH and Smile just make no sense in the context of what GL is about.

The more I think on GL era, the more I feel she could have followed the Adele path with 25 as she wished with this album: something more mellow, organic and focused on her voice and interpretation or even Pink's Funhouse sound like "Please don't leave me" and "Sober"
There were a lot of rumors on "Not enought" being the first single and It could had been huge. Also. After The Best Damn Tour (Back in 2008-2009) she talked a lot about "Everybody hurts" and even played it to some journalists. "Everybody Hurts" as a second single could have been as Iconic as "My happy ending". The song is still a fan favorite to date. Listening the instrumental of "Gone" it made me think that it had potencial to be aired on radios and having a good music video could had a good perfornance. For closing the era we could had "Stop standing there", with this 50's aesthethic (the one we saw on Goodbye's video).
I know, WTH sessios brang us great songs as Wish you were here and I love you but, I'd rather had the original concept of Goodbye Lullaby that was missunderstood and scraped because her label wanted a Girlfriend 2.0 so she gave us WTH, than having those songs.
The reason this era flopped was because her label and her management that didn't gave her the proper promotion.
