I wonder if HAW was another AL5 situation where the cover art was chosen long before the track list was finalized. I think they could have chosen a better photo, maybe one of the ones where she is actually underwater or something. Her sitting on top of the water doesn’t really make any sense. And the charcoal color grading is.... bleh. I don’t know why they couldn’t have left it as full color, it probably would have looked better. Maybe the photo is so dark to represent the dark times she went through. I think AL6 was one of those situations. I will always wonder why she uploaded that pic on IG with the caption that she was choosing something for the album cover among many dresses and then she appear naked with an acoustic guitar. Maybe she was going to pick one of those under water shots and suddenly change her mind at the last minute. I don't know why she thought that appearing naked would make her feel or seem vulnerable. I got her idea and the description she gave of it but being underwater also could make her look totally vulnerable. It described very well her journey and her battle with Lyme, but maybe at the end when she went to the studio to record those "love" songs she changed her mind. This is why I'm thinking and begging that she releases or finishes AL7 ASAP so there's no time for her to experience new situations and go back to the studio to change songs or re-record them. You wanna make a new song, do it, but release it on AL8. She seems very focused this time, I hope nothing gets on her way!

It's just sad we're discussing that she should have chosen the underwater pictures which are also pretty bad executed....seriously the photography for HAW was one of the worst things i've seen in the celebrity world regarding music or cover arts and all that stuff. It's just bad. really bad.
I don't mind the color palette they chose for the cover, that's the least important thing when you have such a bad photoshop work.... i guess it's so dark bc it's supposed to be at night (?) at least that's how i always looked at it.
I don't think she floating or standing in the water like Jesus lol. I'm assuming that the water it's not deep, that's all, if you look at the picture the guitar is slightly underwater form the buttom. So yeah... I don't even mind her being "naked" which she probably wasn't and they just photoshopped her underwear.
But the light coming from underneath her....that kinda of light make everyone look bad. Her head is way too big...and well...the photoshop job is terrible. Seriously, AL5 is ugly as hell...but at least it's not technically bad...

I find it interesting how much harsher opinions are of HAW's cover now. I was a bit.. underwhelmed by it back then already, but I didn't complain for too long, because why spoil the party, haha. Anyway, albums declared as "most personal yet" almost always have either just a "raw" picture of an artist with a bland background and face nicely visible, or they have nudity, which funnily enough also is the case even with Britney Spears' "most personal" Britney Jean album. as far as symbolism goes, at the moment I can only think of Swift's Folklore as having "vulnerability" sort of depicted differently by its album art, and there it's sort of associated with coldness foremostly I think, and hence why coats and sweaters are such a prominent artifact in visual art, and in lyrics (Cardigan), and I personally like that, because my emotions are literally directly connected to how warm/cold I feel. If I become cold I'm going to feel vulnerable/weak, and when I don't feel okay I always get horribly cold (that's why I have 25°C in the room atm, ha ha). If I'm honest I'm a bigger fan of album artwork produced by bands, as they generally don't just stamp themselves onto the cover, but instead use paintings, drawings, and unusual photography, which kind of enables them to not be as constrained at what they're trying to message .

I mean, if you're actually gonna make a nude photoshoot underwater...do it right. This is a single cover art. It's not even close to being one of the best photos underwater that i've seen. But something like this would've worked 10.000 times better than the crappy photoshopped thing we got. Jesus...basically all the photoshoot they did underwater was out of focus... I can also garuantee you that this singer has absolutely no money compared to Avril and she still managed to deliver a beautiful cover. This is how you show vulnerability with the same elements (except the guitar, which is also stupid considering there's only one acoustic song in the whole album but OK...) Edit: not actually AL7 related but sorry, but i guess it's the thread to discuss what they should not do as well. So, sorry for going off topic.

To be honest...they were VERY lame with the HAW booklet. They added the worst pictures and only the underwater photoshoot which was basically ALL blurred and messy....but oh well....that was her aesthetic from 2016-2019 i guess... There were some photoshoots that weren't added like the one with white background and stripped blouse or whatever that was, then the Devil photoshoot which they obviously had more shots not just one, but they only used one picture...and then the ones with the crown in her backyard....like seriously, all of those photsoots were FAR better than the crappy booklet they gave us... and i don't even want to talk about the cover art again.... I understand what you're saying and you're right about the pictures themselves not being the best but I'm going to play devil's advocate for a second: I've seen several people on here saying they wish for consistency in her music and style across an album. So I don't think it is a bad thing that the booklet and cover use pictures from only one photoshoot that represents her primary theme for the album. It's extremely consistent and it gets her point across efficiently without any opportunity for being "messy" since there's nothing that deviates from the primary theme visually. Personally I quite like the booklet.
I do find it funny that the dislike for Head Above Water's horribly photoshopped cover keeps coming up every so often. The more I see it the more I've also started feeling like the color grading/tint feels really strange to me. Though I wonder what the story behind it really is and if it was given as much thought as we'd hope? I just immediately assumed the colors are to represent something a bit darker and more emotionally heavy for her, her being naked is the easiest and most cliche way to express vulnerability and the guitar of course then represents the music that saves or "protects" her. But it could also just simply have been a case of "let's shoot kind of a mature picture for your mature album with a look that's already accepted by the public". Does anyone have a direct quote or something where she explains why she chose the picture?
my emotions are literally directly connected to how warm/cold I feel. If I become cold I'm going to feel vulnerable/weak, and when I don't feel okay I always get horribly cold (that's why I have 25°C in the room atm, ha ha). That's interesting, I personally tend to feel stronger when fighting against the cold! And when it gets pretty warm I start feeling like I can't do much and am stuck in my situation. Though it's true that when my emotions go down if I'm not doing anything else my extremities get noticeably colder.

Yeah, i mean, i wouldn't have a problem with only a photoshoot for the booklet BUT at least make good quality pcitures for it, not blurry pics that looks like they have been shot with a Nokia from 2006. You could also make the same theme but different locations. Like, the HAW single cover and the booklet are different type of pictures even tho it maybe was the same location but you get the idea. Water themed photos is not just underwater. And the underwater shots from the music video are also different. But the booklet is pretty boring, and has literally only 7 pictures...like WTH xD and all the pictures look basically the same. It was a pretty lame work after a 6 years hiatus if you ask me...but maybe i'm too used to kpop albums where they give you like 50-100 pictures photobook with extra stuff in it (that's where taylor got her idea for reputation special edition idk what). But anyways. And well...the photos only represent 2 songs from the album if not only 1 of them. It's a pretty messy album in terms of themes. Drowning, asking for help to God, a captive bird, toxic relationship with Devil and vampire symbolism, cheerleaders boybashing-female empowering anthem...self-love song, a bunch of cute love songs, and a warrior themed song....LIKE the booklet literally only represents the head above water song. but that was not the case anyways xD I actually don't hate the idea of the cover, the composition is pretty ok for an album cover actually... IN FACT it's probably her most technically correct composition for an album cover, it's centered, enough space for the title, it's simple but effective HOWEVER....the execution of taking the picture and then editing and retouching it is TERRIBLE. I don't even midn the black-white-sepia tint or that it's dark...but Jesus, that hard was to hire a good retoucher for the era? 🤦♂️

Let Go will hit 1 billion streams on spotify sometime this year. It earned more than 200 million just last year. Now it is around 900 million. She's getting better at streaming. Now with a new album, and an upbeat one things can get even better Let God is such a monster album. It's interesting how Complicated & Sk8er Boi completely destroys Girlfriend there. I really hope she does something about it for it's 20th anniversary. It's her magnum opus, the most critically acclaimed one. It's time for Avril to takes more care about her legacy. I love Let Go but I still don't get why UMS isn't listened to as much... it's her best album people, come on!

TBDT also got only one hit BUT it's more remembered than ums bc well...how can anyone forget pink Avril? xD it was pretty iconic too, broke youtube's records and it was also closer to the digital era, not to mention GF was the FIRST video to hit 100M views in history SO...that's a pretty big deal. UMS is somehow burried under those 2 eras. The album is more iconic in the fandom but the general public don't really care about it sadly. It's also my favorite era D: (don't know if the album) but the era yes. Professional Rocker Ramona is the best Avril 😂😂

This is a lot of emotion with the blue sea/water around that person! Loved it to be that theme! back on topic... I really hope she would release something soon. As someone said earlier, no time for her to re-think about her decisions and scrap things. Indeed, wanna make a new song? great! for the next era!

What? I'm sorry, but hard disagree to this. The album clearly express a journey from a bad place, illness, toxic relantioship, to empowerment, overcoming, fallin in love again and meeting herself on a good place. While only HAW express herself in the lowest point of the illness, both Birdie, IFILWTD and TMIO kept the feeling of feeling trapped. She has said plenty of times that Lyme actually helped realise who in her life was good and who was a devil. "A pretty bird, you can't sing, but I buy you diamonds and ruby rings", she clearly correlates her lowest point in life with her lowest point in "love". DB and ITWIM clearly showcase her taking agency and realising she is stron enough. Crush, Goddess and LMI kept refering to the demons and the toxic relantioship she had and her insecurities. IWIM and Warrior clearly showcase her progress from asking god to help her to being able to stand for herself. HAW is one of her most consistent album thematically wise. And the only one that kinda tells a story from beggining to end. GL is the only other album that comes to mind to be consistent on its theme (being it love and goodbye for the 80% of the album). TBDT has a bunch of boy-bashing songs, and UMS kinda has a feeling of "lost in life, lost in love" in its first half, but both then do a 180° degree in some parts. And both LG and AL touch a broad area of themes, one with better results that the other, as LG at least feels like "thoughts of a not ordinary teen-age girl". So yeah, HAW is pretty consistent thematically wise. At worst, it lacks a couple more songs that directly address the illness (like a song talking about her feelings about not perfoming again or about some of the bad days she still has even if she is healthy right now). But the title of the album is "Head Above Water", not "Still Drowning In Water".

You didnt understand what I said xD I didn't said it doesn't have a clear narrative, which let's assume it has...even tho it was made up by us, fans, not her. It's all speculation at the end of the day, BUT yeah, let's say the narrative it's cohesive. But I was talking about theme, i don't how to say it, maybe it got lost in translation. What I mean is the symbolism, the art part of the song, the imagery and all that stuff. That's not cohesive, not even close. Water, birds, Fire, devil and hell, self-love song about a masseratti lol, boy-bashing-self-empowerment song, love songs and warriors. Think about how would you make a pciture or painting of every song, that's what I mean. Artistically speaking it's not cohesive. That was my point, it's a mess in terms of concepts. What you are talking about it's the message and the narrative behind the lyrics. Maybe I didn't explain myself well enough, sorry xD

Talking about her description for new album, everytime she uses "personal". Omg, she is running out of vocab. I always like "Okay, the only thing we look up to will forever be in her music, told us to not worry about it". God, a lot of words over used, to a point she starts treat her music become more commercial service rather than telling us about her story where we get inspired in life

Since I'm not professional at photos and graphic. I couldn't comment about HAW's photoshoot quality. But on the imagery side, pretty match. The reason why photos are such blur maybe because they want to create the vision when you are under water, you basically couldn't see. However, I agree that her posture seems weird and out especially she is not mostly immerse into the water

Evan is following Avril again on IG. We’ll have to see if she follows back, but I wonder if they’ll work together for the album

The album HAW may have in some songs basic lyrics but I don’t think the „imagery“ of the words give a wrong picture for what story the album tells. Water, fire, devil, all of those makes sense to me. Even songs I personally didn’t like tell a clear story. „I drove a Maserati, no fulfillment there“ this line is not about the Maserati. It‘s about the void that you try to fill with anything you find. (I agree tho it is basic songwriting.. even tho i like the song..) As for the Photoshoot, I don‘t have much to say to it. I‘m not a photographer the cover never was something special or bad to me. I never cared about it.. And now back to topic.. I came here to see if there are news that I missed but it seems that we don’t have anything yet? I wonder if Avril will keep releasing new stuff after the music video. It would be great to keep the hype up after Flames.
