I can definitely tell the difference between mp3 bitrates, and I'd happily undergo a blind test to prove it. The difference between 320kbs mp3 and FLAC? Not so great. There's no reason not to use FLAC if you have heaps of storage space, though. Yeah. I still wonder about how listening to vinyls is different from 320kbps. If I'm purchasing them, it's for collection purposes.

So 200GB? At what bitrate do you rip them to? 256? 320? FLAC/ALAC? Never FLAC or anything like that, 9 times out of 10 I'd be listening to music on my laptop with its rubbishy speakers so there'd really be no point going for amazing quality files. Normally just the standard m4a/mp3 or whatever that itunes/laptop does, whatever that may be. If I had unlimited memory then I'd get the best quality I could, but until then... Right now I have 10431 songs which is coming to 80.24gb if that's any help? I dunno if you can calculate an average bitrate or something?

I don't like FLAC, as it's not always supported on Mac computers. My choice of lossless is usually WAV or AIFF.

I just can't tell the difference between one step of mp3 bitrates like 128 and 144, if I get a bigger difference like 128 and 160 I can tell a difference. But that's probably just me being used to not so good quality. (main reason is the quality I have of the Origin album by Evanescence) And I have to admit that I've never tried the difference between mp3 and FLAC. On the other hand I'm always afraid to run out of free space on my iPod

Luckily for me, I don't keep all of my music on my phone. My phone shows that I only have 10.4 GB of music on it, which is less than a third of what's on my iTunes.

I have mine on my iPod, my laptop and an external storage. Ever since my small mp3 player broke the first time I had a copy on my laptop dropped that when I got a new one and when that one died the first time I was lucky to save what was on it. But on my phone I have like what? 200 songs? Small amount of my 2000+ collection.

Currently up to 119.59gb, I've slowed down drastically in the last few days, it's getting really boring...

You could buy like ten external CD drives to make the process a bit less tedious. You might need a powerful computer and lots of USB or eSATA ports to make the process any quicker, though.

There's a saying here that goes like "Using cannons to kill flies" to describe this kind of solutions, but with such an amount of data, it doesn't seem so implausible.

When I put my entire CD, DVD and PC games collection on my computer [about 2.5TB of data btw], I dropped £100 on a stack of external optical drives, because that was the only way I could do it without going insane. Sold most of them on eBay after I was done with them, kept a couple around because they're useful to have. Whether it's worth it for a mere 200GB of music is admittedly debatable. But I'd probably still do it the expensive way. It's how I roll, mothafukka.

It depends on what format you have it. I try to put everything that's digital on a CD just in case something is happening
