I think with the way her voice has changed over the years due to different reasons, possibly vocal training and techniques or Lyme (maybe she partied too much in the late 00’s and fucked her nose up with too much coke, who knows?) but her voice is so much more powerful now than its ever been and she can really go for the high notes.
But I’ve noticed when singing live she struggles to hit the low notes when needed, so that the lyrics kinda come out in a flat whisper if people get what I’m saying? Which is why they alter her voice in studio versions to make it more polished.
That’s why I ultimately love live music, it’s not perfect. People can’t always hit each note perfect. Like I much prefer listening to live performances from most artists when they first started up, after success and vocal training over the years I think some artists seem too polished.
I’m also getting blink 182 vibes from the self titled blink album from ModSun on some of the versus.

The first time I listened to it I wasn't that impressed but it's growing on me. It sounds like alt rocks songs I used to hear on the radio all the time when I lived in the US. Maybe it will get some play on rock radio....probably not though lol.

I like the song a bit more with every listen but it isn't a masterpiece. I'm no expert but I don't hear the 'good production' Feldman did but as I said I'm no expert and clearly I don't have a clue. Everyone talks that all albums past TBDT didn't had good production but I don't hear it. Song are good to me.

Whenever people say the production ruins 17 I always think it sounds fine to me. I don’t know what I’m supposed to be listening for with “good/bad” production lol, to me a songs either good or it isn’t!

This song doesn't sound better to me than GL songs (wich people say those lacking production). Also, I have to point out I hear the emotion and anger in ModSun his voice but Avril sound a bit blank, is that a word? Not really feeling her emotion on this one. I hear ModSuns pain for sure tho. But it's his song so that might be the case.

A song being "good" or "bad" is intimately related to the quality of its production. Imagine a cake, you can add eggs, flour, sugar and yeast and make a cake. However, the cake will taste differently according to the way you've measured each ingredient, the order in which you added and mixed everything, and also any other special ingredient you might have added to obtain a special flair. That's exactly what production does to a song. You can have all the same ingredients, but if the production isn't good the song will most likely sound flat, lack the necessary structure to carry the song, or simply sound incoherent/unorganized.
That being said, anything that is of artistic nature is obviously highly subjective, which is the whole beauty of it in my opinion. And in fact, the resurgence of lo-fi music lately proves that for a lot of people a more rudimentary style of production can be a popular genre of its own, which is awesome. So if you listen to Avril's latest albums and find that nothing about the production bothers you, that's more than fine.
For me personally my biggest issue has been how inconsistent the production value across the last 3 albums was. Part of it had to do with the amount of people she brought in to produce her songs, so I'm hoping she can have John Feldman produce the majority of her new album, if not the entire piece.

I feel she doesn't practice her singing that much, like vocal exercises etc.

If you go under the Alternative page on iTunes, Flames is listed under the “New Music” section and it’s currently sitting at #23 on the alternative chart in the US. It’s not on the all genre chart yet.

I’m going to agree with the sentiment that this song is definitely a grower as well. And I think it’s something more suitable for putting on in the background while doing something else or while driving since the lyrics are so repetitive, you don’t really need to sit there and focus on it too hard. If you just listen to it more in the background, it’s actually really catchy rather than feeling repetitive.
On Apple Music I see it’s been added to their New in Alternative playlist. It’s likely getting playlisted due to Avril I would think and we saw last week she’s following some person who’s in charge of curating these lists, so I think her team is working more this era to focus on streaming.
Avril should curate some of her own playlists while adding her own stuff in. That’s what a lot of artists do, they create a playlist with their favorite artists in it but thrown in their own stuff and that’s how they generate a lot of streams.

I would really love to see a playlist made by Avril of all her fave songs. I thought she did this back during AL era with Spotify? I could be wrong as I don’t use Spotify I have Apple Music, but sure I saw something way way back. But not sure if it was actually Avril’s input? We know she’s a technophobe lol

#178 on US iTunes now. We have to see what the Spotify numbers are but it's not charting anywhere on Apple Music so charting on the Hot 100 is really out of reach. Good thing is Billboard has a few rock charts and they're not really competitive so the song should chart there at least. This will probably Mod Sun's first song to chart on a Billboard chart, so far only his albums charted.
