I have no idea what the habits are of alternative and rock listeners these days. Are they more traditional in the way they consume music, in that they actually buy it still, or do they primarily stream? I get the sense a lot of rock fans probably tend to lean more traditional and buy it.

Mgk in the US and yungblud in the uk. But mgk is good at both. His album has like 700M on spotify and for a pop punk record with less than 6 months that's pretty big Maybe Avril can have this kind of support too

According to it, 68% of rock listeners in the US use audio/video streaming (as comparison, pop listeners use it to 83%); 32% of rock listeners still buy their music (both digital and physical; pop listeners only do this to 16%).

Avril's fans are not that young anymore. And I mean, 12-17 young people, not 25-30 like us lol xD She really needs to do something about it, maybe not tiktok BUT still. Artists these days are basically influencers that happenes to make music as well lol. And I mean incluencers not in the meaning of posting cute pictures and selling products no, i mean personalities that people can relate to. I think Avril does have what it takes to be incluencial in social media, except for one thing. Her poor social skills. She's maybe too shy, even tho for posting a video it doesn't take too much courage especially when you've been in front of cameras for 20 years. Once you get to know a little bit more of her, you see that she's quite relateable and funny and genuienly a nice person. She's just terrible at showing that to the world SO....yeah. I do think that if she keeps working with this team, music and video wise, it could go a lot better. People are waiting for her to come back to her roots and it shows. Maybe nostalgia would do all the work for her but i wouldn't bet any major success on that xD

The beauty, the cool personality, the young spirit, the talent... It's just a matter of know how to use it that in her favour About the success i'm not expecting her to do numbers like in the early 00's or anything. But something along GL streaming wise would already be a success for me. I guess more than self-titled and haw it's pretty possible doing everything right.

Avril had 700 million streams on spotify in 2020. That number is great. Britney did 1 billion and she has the double amount of music. Many artists from the early 00's couldn't adapt to streaming so that's pretty good considering avril's last solid WW hit was what the hell HAW did great there too. A christian ballad with almost 200 million plays for her first lead in the spotify era is very telling how she can grow there. I'm really curious on how this next lead supposedly upbeat will do on spotify

I thought that at some point this collab is benefitial for both Mod and Avril. Mod is having the best numbers he's ever had thanks to this collab and bc of Avril fan base is SO SO supportive that they do some promo for him just bc she's there. And avril is really having new fans as Modsun is making her relevant again thanks to the music genre he's making with this new album. Also, working w/ MGK is making her well at all sense, they both have young followers and maybe they didn't know about the existence of Avril or they just heard about her name but never cared about giving a try to her records/singles. I know there's still a lot to do to make her relevant again but now it's the time, people and media are talking about her and FLAMES and at some point I get a little mad bc they speak as if this song is from her and not mod's. Yes, she's back again but wait until she's really back with her own new record and single. I have a good feeling that what's coming is really good. Maybe when Mod releases his new album or new single is when Avril will release her new single for AL7. I was also checking numbers for Yungblud "acting like that" ft. MGK official video which was released a day before flames and it has 1M views. Considering they are good and very well known in the music scene today I'm surprised that they didn't break the internet.

Great point, ame. I was about to type something along those lines.
Avril needs to let her personality come through more. Be more personable. Express herself more. It's all about connection. She's improved a lot in just a couple months, but there's more room for improvement. An easy way to establish more of a connection is to actually show herself more. Show her face. Talk verbally to her audience, express what she's feeling. That's how people sustain fanbases these days, through connecting on a more personal level with their audience.
Remember when Avril posted that video of her playing It Was In Me on the piano with her hairstylist unwillingly appearing on camera and then realizing it and awkwardly trying to get out of the scene while Avril laughed her ass off? That's a real moment right there. That's the type of stuff people connect with. Firstly because it feels like we're getting a glimpse into Avril's day to day life -- it allows us to feel close to her, like we're special enough for her to invite us in -- and secondly because it's something genuine, candid, unstaged. Not only did we get to hear Avril playing and singing for no reason other than she wanted to (typically we only listen to her singing as a formality, a duty she has to fulfil: TV performances, concerts... I'm not saying she can't be genuinely passionate about those performances, but there's always a contract behind them, as opposed to just sitting in your living room playing because there's no other thing you'd rather be doing in that moment), but we also got to see a tiny bit of a real interaction with one of Avril's friends in a genuinely funny moment. That's the kind of stuff virtually anyone can relate to. That's how you go from being this untouchable artist to an actual human being in people's eyes.
For instance, Modsun making stories expressing gratitude for all the support and being super genuine about his excitement VS Avril just typing "Flames is out now, go watch it!". What are you most likely to connect with on a human level? The man who's showing real emotion, facial expressions, verbal speech while talking directly to his audience, or the person who typed a quick sentence on her socials? Now, I know this example is flawed because obviously Flames is Mod's song and he's seeing this level of success and recognition for the first time in his career, but it still goes to show how much being personable and interacting with genuine emotion can help form a connection. The premise is still there.
I was thinking that perhaps Avril could bring back vlogging for her next era. Just some simple stuff showing what she's up to, her thoughts, what she's working on, what she's excited about, even mundane things like what she's been watching lately or something that inspired her recently. It doesn't need to be anything super elaborate or overwhelming for her, just a few videos here and there would be awesome. Also show more behind the scenes of her studio sessions once she releases new music. Any fan of any artist ever LOVES that shit, we love getting to see an artist in their natural element working on their craft. And in general just be more personable, allow the world to see her personality and get to know her beyond the "omg, 2000s icon, that's the girl who sang Complicated!".
ETA: oh shit, sorry for the long post.

I have no idea what the habits are of alternative and rock listeners these days. Are they more traditional in the way they consume music, in that they actually buy it still, or do they primarily stream? I get the sense a lot of rock fans probably tend to lean more traditional and buy it. Rock listener here! I mostly prefer going physical which I know is a rarity these days but it's usually one of the few ways I can get the music in good quality. Spotify, etc don't do it for me because music compressed for streaming sounds quite dead once you've tasted the forbidden fruit of lossless. My only streaming habit is that I'll occasionally use youtube for music if either A. I don't own a track yet or B. for the video (I still buuuurn for yoooouuuu~π₯π₯π₯). Otherwise it's physical releases all the way. And I mean incluencers not in the meaning of posting cute pictures and selling products no, i mean personalities that people can relate to. Wasn't she recently trying to peddle a skateboard line and now motorcycles? Or her clothing brand? Joking and I see what you mean about what she could try but all the influencer (I hate this term) stuff I've seen from her is actually pretty much only posting cute pictures and selling products. Though I haven't been here that long so maybe I just only saw a period where she did that so far?
Interesting to me how quickly stuff turned around for her with a single collab. When I joined here to express my confusion at the livestream a few months ago I saw a lot of "She just ripped us off I'm really doubting my support", "Wow she's hit an all time low with effort", "She'll just make us wait forever while posting studio pictures", etc. Now almost everybody seems to be expecting her to drop new music imminently and is discussing how big her comeback will be. It went from disappointment and faith seemingly down at the earth's core to pretty heavy excitement and sky high expectations. Seems all it takes is adding green hair into the mix? Think that worked for Billie Eilish too. Oh wait... someone else used to have green streaks right? Who was that again?
Wonder if she actually follows through like is now being assumed or if history repeats itself? Could also be the thing that really kills it forever if they now build excitement the biggest it can go and then just don't deliver. What happens if everything initially points to good signs but then it just goes like it apparently has before? Just curious since the narrative seems to have flipped so quickly.

It almost feel like a different fandom i totally have this feeling too My two cents on this is that all the criticism towards that live stream became the reason she's doing all the things people wanted her to do now. Fans were really frustrated about that terrible situation and that brought up every bad shit prior to that. Somehow she read all of it and decided to clean up her career or she would have none to comeback from. So my guess is that the lyme concert brought us here today in this scenario were things are going the right way for once in a decade

She couldnβt miss how angry fans were about that, the comments were all over her posts. She does seem to be trying more (by her standards anyway) since then. That definitely helped change things I think.

I think is too soon to have a 100% opinion about this, at least in my case. Yes, it's not the first time we get excited lol, and nope, it's not the first time she let us down SO....i'm excited but...if things go wrong again i wouldn't be surprised to be honest.
It does look different this era tho, especially the timing, it's her fastest release since LG-UMS, i don't think she's ever responded that much to coments so that's also good. It seems like AL7 will arrive sooner than we expected BUT again...it's Avril, until I don't have the album already released i won't be calm...lol. A lead single, or a date release means nothing in this fandom. She had 3 "lead singles" for AL5....and she's delayed every single album since TBDT.....as i said, it's too soon for me to say that indeed this era will be different or that she changed...
Time will tell, it looks promising tho and i hope she really learned the lesson 'cause the lyme concert was terrible, and yes...people don't talk about it anymore and they are excited for Avril coming back to her roots, but will they forget the lyme concert fiasco? i can guarantee you that they won't.

Actually she's never spoken about "a release of a new record" but mostly "new fun music in 2021", all the time.
So, imo, I'm not surprised if she wants to follow Mod's style to release 3 songs (and again, among these, the collab with MGK who has a great big fandom) and then release the record, at the end of this year. Tour, will follow next year
Probably she just wants to release songs in the time they matter to her, while, in the meantime keeping on working on her record which will contain them.
Who knows.
