YouGov conducted a survey among a polling sample of 1,622 Americans between January-March 2021 regarding their opinions on Avril Lavigne. Apparently the pollster is frequently cited among the media in the United States. I’m not sure about the exact veracity of the survey results as I’m not sure what qualifies as a good sample size, but I still think it could make a fun discussion. Here are all the highlights: - 79% of Americans have heard of Avril Lavigne
- 43% of Americans have a positive opinion
- 10% of Americans have a negative opinion
- 26% of Americans have a neutral opinion
- 57% of Millennials have a positive opinion about Avril Lavigne, making Millennials her most popular demographic
- 49% of Generation X have a positive opinion
- 29% of Baby Boomers have a positive opinion
- 46% of women have a popular opinion compared to 40% of men, making Avril Lavigne more popular among women
- Avril Lavigne is the 76th most popular* pop music artist
- Avril Lavigne is the 66th most famous* pop music artist
* “Popularity” is defined by the percentage of people who have a positive opinion of a pop music artist * “Fame” is defined by the percentage of people who have heard of a pop music artist

I’m interested to know why they conducted this survey (her team trying to get feelers out there before she drops new music?) but the results are not surprising. For example, GenX and millennials being her most popular demographic or being more popular amongst women given she’s a female artist.

In 2008 on Avril's official site, the average registered user was 17.5 years old. The females outnumbered males 2 to 1.

What are millenials and GenX people? I'm not familiar with those terms.

What are millenials and GenX people? I'm not familiar with those terms. Millennial is people born from about 1981 to 1997? So Avril for example is a millennial since she was born in 1984. GenX is 1960s-1970s.

Not gonna lie. I have heard Girlfriend before, but I didn't know the name of the singer when I first heard it. Avril was big back then, but I never heard her name once. I'm surprised that 21% of Americans have also never heard of her.

My grandma used to read things like People magazine so she was quite up on her celebrities and she once clipped out the article about Avril’s wedding with Chad because she remembered I liked her, but otherwise I’m not so sure how familiar she was with Avril. I think she also heard about when I went to see her in concert in 2019 and emailed me saying she never heard her sing but was glad I got to go or whatever lol I imagine most elderly people are not familiar with her though unless they have grandkids who like her or something.

I must have been living under a god damn rock, then. I was 3-4 when Complicated came out and I never heard it until much later.

Well it's also important to remember that around the time Avril started her career, the Internet didn't exist in the way it does now and there was virtually no social media. It was a lot harder to keep up with artists back then unless you religiously watched stuff like MTV and VH1, listened to top 40 radio all the time, and maybe read magazines and stuff. I remember when I first heard Complicated on the radio and loved it immediately but I didn't catch the name of the song or artist and it wasn't until several months later when I saw her perform on TV that I realized it was the same song I had heard months earlier.

I'm not sure that I knew her name but I remember hearing Complicated and Sk8er Boi on the radio. I knew the songs but not Avril. It wasn't until MHE that I have memories of seeing her face while performing MHE at Jingle Ball. It's funny because she was on Sabrina the teenage witch during LG but I don't remember seeing her. Maybe it was because I watched reruns and not the live episodes. Girlfriend is when she stuck out to me and stayed there. The internet helped a lot in 2007 tho.

Missed this thread earlier but the sampling itself is so bad, how are the results even relevant. 1600 people only?
I had a batch of 500 students just in my class in school.. lol.

Hi ArnavKiKhushi, I don't know about this particular pool, but a sample of 1600 persons it's ok for the US population. The key is to choose these person properly to make them representative of the total amount of the population (random and diverse kind of persons). If someone pick the 1600 with all american members of Avril Bandaids the pool was very bad, 100% have heard about Avril Lavigne and probably 90% or more of them have a good opinion of Avril (or the opposite if the pollster choose them selecting persons in the AL7 thread ). Same problem with the student of your class if someone use it to made conclusion about the opinion of the people of your city. But 1600 if were choose properly give the pollster information of 330 million persons population with less than 3% error margin.
