I never understood why she had to make the song Hello Kitty and who told her to.Its easily the worst Avril Lavigne song for me,even though the self titled album is a really, really good album as a whole. No one made Avril do anything, if you go back and watch her interviews from that era that was clearly the song she was most excited to release (in fact, I don't remember her ever having that reaction to a song of hers since). She would constantly bring up the song on her own during interviews and sounded quite proud of it. Was the song good? Not really, but i respect her for trying to do something different...

What a poor decision considering the controversy and backlash.Very sad how that song overshadowed what otherwise were amazing singles,at least in my opinion. Here's To Never Growing Up,Rock N Roll and Give You What You Like were really amazing. It ruined what could've been a great era otherwise because I loved the album and the tour. She has always had a great voice but during that era,her vocals were on fire and still are today.

The blasphemy of Complicated being that low… 😱/joking AYE. I’m happy Bite Me entered top 10!!!!!one of her best lead singles!!!! Tho, imo, her lead singles are usually really strong so it’s no surprise.
I’m a little shocked to see how high birdie is tho. It’s a great song, so I don’t mind it being high up.

Look, it just so happens to be a bop and one of my faves off the record😂 Hello kitty aside, there were a few controversies that era. Don’t forget her distancing herself from fans because she wasn’t feeling well and didn’t know she had Lyme at the time. Everyone misconstrued it as her not liking her fans.

Here’s my little ramble on why I think UMS songs/videos/the album as a whole are always so popular..
I’ve been a fan since the Let Go era. LG was great, it was iconic, she was iconic and it’s my favourite album from her and I consider it by far her best (despite questionable writing credits).
But UMS just hits me straight in the nostalgia. It’s the kind of music we all wanted (and mostly still want) from her - solid 10/10 pop rock with fairly mature themes. She did upbeat without being bratty (hello Who Knows and Freak Out). The videos were flawless - I’ve just watched them all on YouTube and now I want to go back and watch them again. The single choices were FLAWLESS. The Bonez tour was her best. Her look evolved - every outfit was on point and the black and blonde hair was perfect. She went from being the tomboy with greasy hair (lol) to someone every girl wanted to be and every guy fancied. It was the first era a real fanbase kicked in - everyone loved LG but she was a new artist, UMS was the first time we all got the excitement of the buildup to a new album and followed it from start to finish. She was absolutely everywhere - every magazine, every TV show.
The UMS era was all round special and we’ll never get one like that again. It’s impossible to do these ratings on quality alone, so much more comes into it. Are the songs on UMS 12 of her best ever songs? Probably not. Do they bring something no other era (other than maybe LG) can? Absolutely.

Yeah, true.Especially when there are pictures from the same meet and greet where she was literally hugging fans if they asked for it.I heard her security guards messed it up for her.The Hello Kitty controversy was also terrible and her marriage to Chad Kroeger, the lead vocalist of Nickelback also made people hate her for absolutely no reason. She's been overhated by most people and most people assume she's a bad person but they have nothing to prove it.She's in reality,a very sweet, grounded, humble person. But the controversies could've been avoided.

Do they bring something no other era (other than maybe LG) can? Absolutely. Wonderful post and analysis, Katy! I actually think the music on UMS is some of her best. The dramatic composition in songs like Together, Forgotten and Take Me Away is something of beauty. The production is super strong all across the board. Even a song like How Does It Feel, which some may consider boring, has some of the most beautifully layered outros of her entire catalog imo (those "ah ah ahs" at the end always get me). The upbeat songs don't feel childish or bratty like you said. And even though the lyrics are simple, they feel real and authentic and I like the fact that she covered a variety of themes. And you're right, the era itself was amazing. It was the evolution we all wanted to see in her career at the time. It made sense. Plus, she became a much better performer during that time. Her vocals improved drastically from the previous era, she was playing instruments on almost every song and really stepping up her game in every aspect of her career, which was really exciting to watch.

There's nothing THAT special about it, the lyrics aren't strong, her vocals are nothing special... People just miss this type of sound from her, which is fine, but they look at it with no objectivity. I also don't think Avril would have remained as popular if she continued doing these sort of songs, even if she probably would have been more respected as an artist.

True.Forgotton is an underrated gem and I also love the fact that since 2005,she has played drums on almost every tour(except The BlackStar Tour in 2011) and she brought out Tom Delonge on Tour as well in Brazil to sing 'All The Smalls Things' by Blink 182.She performed 'Forgotten' LIVE in Japan and it was a fantastic performance and then the 'Unwanted' performance in Japan was a killer performance.Avril Lavigne has had great vocals since 2005,but they really started to shine in 2010-present,especially the self titled album Avril Lavigne Tour from 2013 and BlackStar Tour in 2011 was great too.Head Above Water Tour in 2019 and now Bite Me/Love Sux Tour this year in 2022.

Glad to see HAW still in the top! It's one of her best songs, I always think I got bored of it but within the first seconds it amazes me. Obviously the classics MHE, NH, IWY belong to the top. Also love to see my favourites Losing Grip, Take Me Away and Avalanche in the top 20. I miss IWIM though.

I don’t think it’s as good as LG but for me it’s definitely her second best album. Even if the music isn’t that special, the era as a whole really was and I think it’s very hard for anyone to do these ratings purely on quality. Agree she wouldn’t have remained popular if she kept doing UMS-style songs, but that’s not because they’re not any good, it’s just that style of music didn’t remain popular. And to be fair, the lyrics aren’t strong on any of her albums other than Let Go (which I think we all now know she did not write the majority of). She was still a teenager when UMS came out - it’s a solid effort for her first go at having more of a hand in writing.

So you mean to say she got worse with every album she released?Nah.Under My Skin is her best album. All albums are great except Head Above Water, which is just okay.Don't get my wrong,it does have good songs but stlll pales in comparison to her other albums.

Besides UMS-Avril being the coolest girl I have ever seen and basically being how I wanted to be when I was 14 years old, the music of UMS is great. Mainly because of the tempo. Everything is so mid-tempo, not too slow (GL), not too fast (TBDT, LS). The mid-tempo, heavier songs, have always been my favourites on every album.

It was great but I have never loved the TBDT-tour with the dancers and all that. I preferred the UMS-Tour with just her rocking out. Looking forward to see her next year hopefully!
