Yeah I think compromises are definitely necessary sometimes, and GL is just a unique case because the label wanted another TBDT-type album with that level of success, whereas Av wanted a more raw stripped down album that fit the mood of her divorce. Idk I just think about how Kelly's "My December" album wasn't really what they label wanted but it was a passion project for her because of what was going on in her personal life, and they kinda just let her do it because they recognized it was a therapeutic passion project. And that's how I think the label should've handled GL. Or only pushed her to write a more radio friendly lead single that still fit into the theme of the album, rather than forcing 2.
I agree there was totally a shift after GL but she seemed a lot more inspired/excited during LS, hoping that continues.

I'm sorry I just want to talk kelly for a minute 😅 min 24:04 she starts talking My Decmber. She got her album but Clark Davis the head of the label "completely shat on it" in front of a convention and they fucked her over with the promotion of this album. It was all so petty. This interview as a whole is very informative especially from the mid point of the interview she goes into all her struggles with her label from day 1 and it is unbelievable. I wish Avril would lay it all like this one day. |

Damn, yeah I’ll bet Avril’s got some of her own stories like that of how writing sessions went, etc. I remember in the beginning they didn’t really let her have much input because they were like “You’re a little girl, what do you know?” She had wanted to put Darlin on an album for years and never got the chance until GL.

There's so many stories about how trash RCA was tho (still is!) Isn't Normani from 5H signed with them? Not a single hint of her debut album til this day. They have a reputation of blocking albums when they don't like the material/think it's a hit, and with that they keep destroying careers They were trying to teach Avril how to behave with GL, expecting that she would've just do what they want next, but she then decided to just end the contract when she had the chance to. Too bad epic wasn't any better She has a lot to say about labels, but I think she wouldn't do it. There's some forces on the industry that you don't mess with it or they can damage your career for good. |
