6. The Forced Smile
A forced smile looks manufactured and unnatural. We need more than pulled-back lips, through the use of a muscle called risorius to show our teeth, to convince someone we are happy and exuding a positive emotion.
This can be detected especially when eyes are not engaged with mouth - resulting in the eyes looking dull or listless. The fake smile gives the impression that we do not mean what we are saying - and it evokes a response of dislike or will damage social bonding. #QueenOfFakeSmiles #IAmCurrentlyMakingMoney

I've seen so many pictures of Avril with this forced smile before! But somehow I always feel as though I'm the only one who thinks like "ehm.. this looks so forced" because everyone around me is just like "OMFG LOOK AT AVRIL'S SMILE!!! ♥♥♥" But this "forced smile" is totally understandable. I mean, imagine being on the red carpet and having to smile the whole time, no matter if you're actually sad or angry or sick, no matter if you've already smiled so much that your whole face hurts. I'm sure there are at least a thousand pictures of every celebrity with a forced smile like that. And anyway, we all know that Avril can also wear a 100% real smile =)

Avril's smiles are not forced, imo. I consider her "forced" smiles more as insincere rather than forced. I don't understand how Avril does it so much. A natural smile is easy, but a forced smile takes more effort and seems like it hurt if done for a long period.

A natural smile is easy, but a forced smile takes more effort and seems like it hurt if done for a long period. Hmm. Care to explain the difference? A [sincere] smile conveys an emotion - e.g. happiness, contempt or embarrassment - and is an involuntary reaction to external stimuli or a memory, yes? So it follows that an insincere smile doesn't convey this emotion and isn't involuntary, and the only way you could pull it off is by forcing it, unless you have some kind of illness which affects the way the muscles in your face work. EDIT: Unless you just meant that her "forced" smiles aren't happy smiles, but who says that only happy smiles are sincere smiles?

Nothing beat this That 2004 interview was from my country. They chose the wrong interviewer - who didn't know a shit about Avril's songs - the interviewer asked whether the last track from UMS was a song about her grandfather's love affair. And the interviewer gave her a "Naver" hat, as if Naver was a name of her fandom in Korea, when it was actually a sponsored advertisement portal. The interview sucked, and we were really, really embarrassed.

Not only is that just a plain stupid question, it's also really rude and disrespectful since it was really about his death. If they didn't actually know what the song was about, they could have just said "What did you write that song about?" I can't blame Avril for those weird faces she made.

The second pic isn't actually a weird face, she was more like waiting for the translation of the next question.
The question of the second pic was, "What color would best describe your music?" Lame, right. All the questions were like this, and Avril didn't try to hide her boredom during the interview.
She didn't make any weird faces when she was asked about Slipped Away, she just calmly answered that it was about her grandfather's death, but that didn't make the situation any less humiliating to the fans watching the interview broadcasted on TV.
Never understood why they chose an interviewer who couldn't understand English.

02:47 Slipped Away question
#warning : extremely boring interview
The last time I watched this interview was, well, in 2004. So I was wrong about some important things.
1. The interviewer was one of the fans.
2. The interviewer spoke English (even if it was slightly broken), so Avril wasn't waiting for the translation, but was listening to the question directly.
3. Her smile was more of a "wry smile" than "forced" during the interview.
4. The first "smile" of the two gifs Gabo posted was right after Avril answered that she would 'describe her music as dark color'. And it was not a forced smile (but weird indeed)
But that promotion hat of a certain website still sucks.
And don't like how that interviewer brushed off the "Slipped Away" question easily as if it was nothing, after she knew that she was mistaken and the song was actually about her grandfather's death.

EDIT: Unless you just meant that her "forced" smiles aren't happy smiles, but who says that only happy smiles are sincere smiles? When I hear "forced" smile, I think of Avril being told that she must smile; therefore, she being forced by someone else to smile. I don't think of as a voluntary smile, or opposite of what you defined as a sincere smile, as forced. Even if you are purposefully smiling and doing so voluntarily, you aren't automatically smiling in the same way as Avril does when wearing her "forced smile". If you have an insincere smile in which it wasn't involuntary, then you have complete control over what kind of smile you put on. Avril's "forced smile" is certainly not the only kind of smile that could be considered forced. Anyone can fake a natural smile easily; Avril just doesn't and tends to wear this deemed "forced" smile. And when I hear the word "force" I think of an actual force, as if smiling voluntarily is a struggle takes much effort. A fake smile is as effortless as a natural smile, the only difference is that you have to think about faking a smile and you don't when it naturally occurs. I just don't view voluntary smiles as forced just because they take effort. In my opinion, a forced smile would be the case of smiling unwillingly because someone else is requiring you to do so, or if you had a physical condition that made smiling difficult and you literally would have to force yourself to smile.
