I still can't understand why people say that "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana is a catchy, perfect pop song. Feels extremely indie and psychedelic, only liked the first 7 seconds of the song.. But then, I never liked Nirvana's music. I wasn't a big fan but, I did like some of their work, especially 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. I thought it was catchy but, far from "perfect" and I don't think "pop" at all. Then again, I don't get hung up on labels.

Kurt Cobain himself labelled the whole Nevermind album as a pop album. In comparison to their others, it definitely is a pop record. Easy to digest, watered down rock music made for the masses in comparison to some of their other stuff. Literally some of their other songs are just him screaming off key into a microphone over some loud distorted guitars. Smells Like Teen Spirit is a melodic, cohesive pop dream in comparison. It might be overrated but I do think it's a great pop/rock track. Nevermind has better songs than that though.

Check out this performance of Angie Miller, a finalist from American Idol season 12, covering Jessie J's "Who U R":
I was reminded of it because someone sang it last night on The Voice and I remembered Angie's version, had to look it up, and WOW is it even better than I remembered! Holy cow! If you don't get chills when watching this, then I don't know, there might be something wrong with you. Just damn. Vocals, emotion, everything. Pure perfection! I love the way she says "true" on "just stay true to who you are." Sadly she did not win her season of Idol, but damn this girl needs to be on Broadway or something, she has the voice and theatrics for it for sure. Her original song "You Set Me Free" is amazing as well, she wrote it by herself: This girl has never had vocal lessons, piano lessons, nothing. Pure, raw, natural talent.

Disagree with that part. Just because their other albums and songs are less melodic and more psychedelic, doesn't mean Nevermind is a "watered down rock music for masses" - Nirvana became popular because their music was "completely different" from the rock the masses were used to. The whole alternative rock music scene since Nirvana started from the antagonism of mass-producing of the radio-friendly mainstream rock. It's a different genre from the rock music before it, not a watered down version.

Let's just say that Nevermind was Nirvana's most accessible album, and leave it at that. And I don't want to get into another "is X pop?" discussion, but Teen Spirit is one of those songs you could play literally anywhere and people will dig it.

^ Yes, essentially what I meant. By today's standards, Nevermind is just as rock as probably anything else is. But again, IN COMPARISON, to their other albums Bleach and In Utero (also Incesticide if you want to count that), it's definitely more accessible/watered down/more listenable, whatever you want to call it. If someone who wasn't familiar with Nirvana had to listen to one of their albums and got their choice, most people would probably choose Nevermind, not just because it is their most well known album and most recognizable work, but probably also because it's the only album of theirs IMO that really sounds anything close to the kind of music most people are used to hearing. Most of Bleach is him screaming off key over some distorted guitars with no real structure to the songs, at least from what I remember from only hearing the entire album once. In Utero is a little better but there's still some of those kinds of "songs" on there. That's why I said IN COMPARISON to all of their albums, Nevermind easily the most pop, most commercial, most accessible, etc.

A pop song is -a song that follows verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus layout. -written in a way to attract a wide audience (thus the word pop or popular) usually by melody or hooks. -borrows styles from other genres of music, but usually uses electronic beats and instruments but not all the time.

In comparison to other Nirvana albums Nevermind really is the easiest one to listen to. Songs like Smells Like Teen Spirit, In Bloom, Come As You Are and Lithium are no Heart Shaped Box. BUT people wanted to hear the trashy, the uncommon. The 90ies really stand for themselfs. Grunge was more than music, it was a lifestyle and a belief. And that belief had nothing to do with being easy to digest or watered down. Bands like Nirvana, Garbage or Pearl Jam stood for something more than just their music and that feeling of being an outsider, of being not the mainstream actually made some of those bands mainstream just because so many people wanted to be against it. Really just a bit like the Avril Britney affaire.
