Even though I gave UMS the best rating, I would've liked a more surprising result. But I wasn't expecting one anyway, so...
I personally can never decide whether I like LG or GL more, even though I can totally see that GL is objectively only an okay album. Simple lyrics, always same chord progression, flat production. But to me, the second half of the album is pure magic, nearly every song of that half makes me cry. How can I not love an album like that?
TBDT is, I think, a very, very good pop-punk album with some really clever lyrics. Thing is just, I don't like pop-punk much. It often (like in the case of TBDT) sounds kinda chaotic and childish to me. I used to love the brattiness as a kid, now I think it's over the top and, once again, childish. And then the topics of the songs - they're either about some guy or simply something funny and bratty. Nothing I can relate to. I prefer serious lyrics about other stuff than the same old relationship issues again and again and again. A fun song here and there - no problem. But not almost an entire album of it. Which is why I personally couldn't give this album more than 6/10.
AL doesn't have a single song that I would give 10/10, yet it has two songs that I give 1/10 every year. Half of the songs are lyrically childish and senseless. The autotuning is awful. The production, mixing, and mastering is even worse. The gang vocals annoy me. The instruments, especially the "drums", are lame.
Then there's the other half, the one Avril wrote with David Hodges and Chad. Those songs have potential, but somehow still don't manage to fascinate me. But what probably bugs me the most is that "Hello Heartache" could've been one of Avril's best songs, if it wasn't for her annoying accent.
And then, of course, the album structure overall is totally chaotic. We go from silly fun songs and a summer song to a Nickelback leftover that doesn't just mention December, but gives me total winter vibes. We get more winter-ish vibes with the calm, mysterious GYWYL. Then there's a crazy rock song, then some EDM thing, then a happy song about falling in love, followed by yet another dumb summer song, and then back to piano/guitar ballads. It's a total mess. There's no golden thread. And above all, I simply don't really feel Avril in most of the album. Didn't she mention that Chad sometimes had to persuade her to go to the studio? I feel like I can actually hear that in the songs. She just kind of lost her way with this record. 5/10 from me. Rant over lol.
