Random Avril Discussion Thread

So just some opinions now that I finished derycks book….

It’s really interesting Deryck’s version of things overall.

It really sounds like they were doomed from the start and that makes me feel awful for the things they had to endure individually and together.
The fact that his band largely disliked her (he wrote that she’d often ask if they hated her and he didn’t have the heart to tell her they did, thanks to their manager who influenced them) and that they didn’t support their relationship is wild. Even at the point they got married, they didn’t care for her.
He admitted it was the first time he fell in love. The fact that his own fans would talk shit about her to his face, and likewise her fans would shit all over him - which I recall in real time - is still so disgusting.
His take of the break up somewhat surprises me given the content of GL- how he fought for her, demanded she put in equal the work to rekindle what they’ve clearly lost or just let each other go for both their sakes and that she quickly and easily (seemingly) decided they’d fizzled out and it wasn’t worth the effort. In other ways it only confirms what I’d assumed back then. That I recall from the time, which is spot on how he reported- her being away from home, partying, the cheating rumors (which he said she vehemently denied and he believed her). Between the way the media was back then, his band and both their fans opinions, it seems it literally destroyed them in ways we likely won’t truly ever understand.

With all that said, he never villainized her in any capacity. He told his truth while respecting her, noting how in love and devoted he was to her throughout their relationship, even when he said they were married but living separate lives. How he fell deeply in love right away but she was okay hiding it at first (how she thought it was fun) and he desperately wanted the world to know. They discussed children and they both felt like it was them against the world. That when they did the Alice promo, that was his closure from his relationship with her and he finally felt free to move really on. It was overall a really good and interesting read. I tried condensing it to what pertained specifically to Avril but there are more bits I didn’t touch upon

It’s good to see that despite what happened between them they still remained friends, even were able to work on GL together, and to this day she even just sang onstage with him. It’s good to see that despite what happened they clearly still have a lot of love and respect for each other.

By his side of things, it wasn’t. He didn’t get out of control until after they split. He was self medicating for pain, mental health issues and he felt he didn’t have a problem because he was functioning and proved he could quit cold turkey anytime he wanted. And he did, multiple times. I think once he felt like he was on solid ground again and the more he saw and heard about her out and about after their split and that she was doing okay, he was like why am I hiding inside miserable when I can go out and party too? So that’s basically what he did and it got completely out of control- he just didn’t realize it at the time.

Man it’s so sad the way people trashed both of them. You don’t have to necessarily like the person your fave celebrity is with but why on earth would you show up to their concert or be asking for an autograph and in the same breath be insulting their partner? That’s just so rude! Imagine if a stranger came up to you on the street and started insulting your partner, I’d throw hands 😤 It’s no wonder after a while Avril started keeping her private life more private, except for Chad and Mod who were more open to the idea of being so public.
