Have just listened to the song. As an usual rock listener, I like it A LOT. I might play it on loop for weeks. Even though the hook is kinda repetitive, it might make some noise on alternative charts. It sounds really alternative, and it is SO nice hearing Avril's voice through heavy electric guitarsand real drums again after all this time. She's still got it! I like the way Avril is like a cliff hanger, the calm before the storm... It is usual in rock duets, one person singing "clean" and the other singing "dirty". Her clean vocals here remind me of Don't Tell Me and Who Knows, she sounds like she did on Under My Skin and yet it sounds SO refreshing. Nothing special on her vocal range here, this sounds kinda "easy" for her to sing, but her volume technique on this song shows how much of a professional she is. Her interpretation is good too! I love Mod Sun's take on this as well, the desperation on his voice, his interpretation This is by far her best duet yet, and I hope it becomes big enough to Mod Sun drop his album. REALLY excited for AL7 now. This might be my fave album (or 2nd) if she goes down this road in sound. Okay, my excitement is through the roof 🤯 This sounds so promising!

The more I listen to it the more I think it's rather "alternative" than "pop rock" considering the random track radios & style playlists I listen to on Spotify I can't see it as pop rock... I say it as a rock fan. It really falls into the Alternative Rock niche in instrumentation/melody and production. Pop rock tracks are mixed differently too, the vocals are way more to the "front" instead of blending with other instruments on the sides. They didn't have any intention of making a pop rock track with this. I love it more at each listen tbh.

I haven’t been able to find it in HQ, so maybe I’ll just wait until its official release here to give it another listen and get those streams pumping.
John Feldmann has done a great job producing the track, as edd said above, it brings a nostalgic feeling, but still manages to sound modern. This is what I’ve always wanted from her to begin with. And if this is a taste of what we can expect from the album, well, let’s just say this might take TBDTs place as my 3rd favorite album. And maybe, just maybe, surpass LG, but that would be too much of a milestone. As long as it’s better than any of her last 3 albums, I’ll be super pleased.

Hmm.... I dunno. Avril sounds good, mod is like yelling at me. I prefer Karma more over that. This pretty sums up that I don’t like Av collabs. It’s sooooooo repetitive which for three or so writers..... not good. Avril sounds better with softer songs. This was... idk.

I prefer Avril on heavier songs. But I see where you're coming from. The song is a grower... Give it two more listens if you will, it might get a bit better for you.

Just heard it, I think it's safe to say it's not quite what I was expecting based on the descriptions we got so far. I don't dislike it but I also don't love it. It might grow on me eventually but for now I'm firmly in the middle.
It definitely is very repetitive like others have said already and I don't feel like Avril and Mod Sun's voices mash very well (like Avril is doing her own thing in the background and Mod Sun is yelling over it). Though the production on it is good and towards the end it gets much better in my opinion. I literally said "suddenly, pop punk" out loud when that part kicks in. I am glad Avril is featured heavily, though it's absolutely more a Mod Sun track than an Avril track and I feel people should go in expecting that to be less disappointed maybe (given some of the reactions I see on here so far)? I can understand where the hype came from but it's better to go in expecting that I think. It's definitely better than most of the other collabs though!
Personally I'm slightly underwhelmed, it's short and repetitive which for all the hyping feels like I'm being shortchanged a bit on the final product. It's also interesting to me that the lyrics are so repetitive with three writing credits. Did they all contribute one of the phrases that gets repeated constantly? If the song was a bit longer and had more varied lyrics I think it could have been more special. It feels like every section is pretty short, a bit underdeveloped and gets repeated one time too many for what it is. I would also almost say it leans more towards rock than anything else.
Overall I think it's good news for AL7 even though I expect Flames itself to not do amazingly well. But to everybody who really likes it: Enjoy!

Like i said earlier i think she keep it cute to go all for it with the lead. That's why modsun is doing all the agressive tone while she's more poppy. I think it's smart. The lead will probably be a banger and very upbeat. I bet this collab was something coming last minute when he was already finishing the album that's why is a little repetitive and short. I don't mind it i just want a music video and then we can start the new era with AL7 lead single. Feldmann production was the stronger think about this track

Can someone help me with the second verse? What the hell does he say? "and left nothing more than ashes"? it sounds weird and with extra syllables lol.

My biggest takeaway from all of this and the one thing I'm TRULY excited about here is the production. Production = chef's kiss. SO many of Avril's songs across her last 3 albums were massively let down due to weak and inconsistent production that it's honestly a huge relief to see her working with someone who can clearly take a genre she loves and was known for and make it sound more current and a little more interesting to fit into today's music scene. That's the winning formula right there. Now all she needs is to write some clever lyrics and be more passionate than she's been in the past, and I think we could definitely have ourselves her best record in years.
"Flames" as a song is not anything spectacular in my book and will probably go over most people's heads, but it's still a nice song and it definitely grows on you. I still believe they should have chosen a more fun and aggressive track to kick the year off tho -- this start of the year is begging for uplifting fresh new energy after the turmoil of 2020 imo.

I absolutely agree 💯 I didn't expect the pop take and I think that's the problem with almost everyone who's not really keen on it but I find it a good balance. I think I'll be looping this. In the late 00s this would be a gem. I think in 2021 it will be a niche song but honestly that's were I prefer seeing Avril as a musician: in a niche more than only inside her fandom where's she's stuck for years now. If she goes down this road as you say I think fans either from modsun, yungblud, Halsey, MGK, and others might let her "join the group" on their playlists. I also am curious to see this live. VERY!

Bones and Karma are both under 3 minutes and most of MGK's album is under 3 minutes per song too so I'm not surprised at the song length. Typicaly pop-punk songs are shorter. Maybe that means Avril will write shorter songs this time and make a 15 song album. Who knows I haven't heard Flames yet

I haven't listened to it anywhere yet, but as far as the length is considered, nowadays most songs are short. Not only are people's attention spans shorter than they used to be, but I think it helps songs get placed on more playlists if they are relatively short. At least that's what I've heard.
