Ok I finally found it uploaded on YouTube. I'm not gonna post the link so as not to take away from official streams, but if anyone's not heard it yet, a lyric video was just posted on YouTube with the song less than an hour ago. Just search "mod sun flames" on YouTube.
Well, I'll say I think the song's just alright based on a first listen. The writing is nothing great and definitely very repetitive. This song seems like a last minute addition that probably didn't take long to complete, hence the short track and repetitive lyrics. It almost seems like a filler.
Pros: I think the instrumentation and production on this track is really solid. I would describe it as alternative rock more than pop/rock or certainly pop/punk. I agree with the comparisons to Listen, it's like a harder version of that.
Avril's voice sounds really good for the most part, especially the end. The first time we hear her sing though, her voice sounds a little weirdly autotuned IMO.
The song is definitely underwhelming, but I think it's important to remember this is Mod Sun's track and Avril is just a feature. I get sort of a "Love the Way You Lie" vibe from it where Avril is there to add some softer vocals to offset Mod Sun's aggressive vocals. I didn't like the bridge where his voice gets very distorted though, it was just too loud.
Overall this is not a great track on its own, but is a promising indication of what we can probably expect from AL7. With better writing, this could be her best album since TBDT. At least the production and instrumentation here is really solid and that's something that her music has lacked for a good decade. I just hope the songwriting itself is better on her tracks than this one.

Just listened to it albeit in very low quality. It was alright. Think it might be a grower.
I actually liked MOD SUN’s parts more than Avrils’s. I can see where he’s coming from saying it sounds like the Foos. And yes I also get what someone above saying it sounded similar to Nickleback. The last part of the song is the best where it ramps up a bit. Reminds me of Airplanes by BOB and Hayley whatsherface
I doubt it will make a big impact on the charts.

When we first heard the 5 second clip, I was a little concerned the song would sound outdated and I was sort of getting Nickelback vibes from it. But I'm pleasant surprised and relieved after hearing the full song that it sounds very modern and not dated at all.

But I'm pleasant surprised and relieved after hearing the full song that it sounds very modern and not dated at all. I think it’s just his gruffly voice that reminded me of Dave Grohl or Chad. The actual sound of the song doesn’t really sound like Nickelback. But yes you’re right it is modern sounding. |

At best it might impact the alternative or rock charts, but I don't see it going anywhere on the Billboard Hot 100. Mod Sun is not known enough and even though Avril is a big name, most people don't care about her anymore enough to seek out this random track. Especially because she's only a feature. As for digital/streaming, Taylor just released the deluxe edition of her album today so those tracks will be sitting near the top of iTunes for a while. Justin Bieber also released a new single that's currently #1 on iTunes. She's got some tough competition this week. Depending on what genre they release it under (guessing alternative), they might have a chance to get #1 on the iTunes alternative chart, though Taylor will probably take the top 2 spots with her bonus tracks. |

Ok I have to take something out of my chest. Loud guitars and real drums and percusion is not the only factor that qualifies as good production. I think HAW has many, many songs that are incredible well produced, mixing a lot of real instruments and contemporary sounds and no song in the album has actual loud guitars. There is also voice mixing, backing vocals, pith correction, autotune if used...
This song in particular has some problems in the mixing of Avrils voice in some of the louder parts (and prob the reason many people say their voices don't blend together). I'm waiting for the HQ version to judge the production of the song, but other parts seems like "too loud" and some of the harmonies and background instruments get buried.
And the song is clearly alt-rock/rock inspired, but there is no deny that there is a lot of pop, catchy and melodic element to it. And Avrils voice sounds nothing like her voice in UMS. From UMS to HAW she has played in a similar vocal range with the exception of the big vocals moments, but there is no rage nor angst in her voice like she had in DTM. If anything, the voice here is more similar to how she sings How You Remind Me.

Just listened on YT (thanks Andrea!). It’s more to my taste than I expected. I was expecting some loud in your face song. I don’t love it, but it’s not her song so I don’t really care. I like it enough to add on Apple Music tomorrow lol

I don't see this song having any expressive chart run at all, but hopefully the streams are decent. I'm excited to see what kind of visuals they deliver for the MV now  Hopefully we don't have to wait too long to find out. A good MV is always something that can help get songs stuck inside people's heads. I know I've rewatched the MV for Karma multiple times just to watch the video as I find it quite a fun and colourful visual experience -- and the video has a super simple treatment, which proves you can make nice, clean looking MVs on a smaller budget and have them be just as effective. |

I see the song has been added on a lot of New Music Friday playlists across Asia and Oceania. Not played that high but someone around 15-25 which is I think a higher placement that what any song from the HAW era (minus title track) got.
Do you think Big Noise is working with Avril's management to promote this? Mod Sun really didn't get such (good for him) playlisting for his other singles. Spotify occasionally puts him on alternative playlists.

i think her part in this song could also be on her Head Above Water Album.. she only shows ''look here i can sing super duper'' and only mod sun's part is the Rock part. i wished she would also make more rock vibes like Halsey with machine gun kelly

Just listened to it. I'll never do that again. My taste in music developed back in ancient times, when singers actually sang. The electronic processing done to Avril's voice is unforgiveable.

It’s good, not great - it’ll probably grow on me. Some of the lyrics are very rudimentary and probably could’ve been improved upon (“I still burn for you like the sun burns in the sky” made me wince a little lol). I definitely don’t see it charting anywhere - knowing Avril and her team’s abhorrent promotion skills, and Mod Sun’s low level of exposure, it just won’t happen. But, that being said, super happy to start the year off with new Avril!
