First, autotune is not supposed to give any effect on the voice. that's distortion or whatever the effect is called. If autotune is done corectly you shouldn't notice it. Only people with pitch perfect or the ones that work as producers will probably be able to tell when autotune has been added, which in this days, basically every song (unless you're a hippie or an indie artist lol). I don't hear any "computer-like" voice on her. I think what you guys are hearing it's her damaged voice from lyme. It's nasally as hell as it has been since 2018 and maybe that's why it sound weird. Cause i don't hear anyone complaining abut modsun's voice, and the track was produced by the same guy, so it doesn't make sense to me and i don't think Avril needs more autotune than modsun lol. anyways, she's not able to defend her songs live since TBDT-GL. Her studio versions almost all the time sounds better (a few exceptions like 17 or push) but overall she's been a mess vocally lately. She wasn't able to defend it was in me live not a single time. But that's another topic xD anyways, i get that some of you don't like, that's cool. But i think is a bit unfair to blame it one the "production" when the production is pretty great tbh. say you just don't like the song, there's no need to justify you disliking of the song lol xD don't get me wrong and i'm sorry if i sound rude, that's not my intention. I hate LMI for example and i guess i couldn't actually explain why rather than the annoying "yeah-yeah" parts. But that wouldn't be enoguh for an objective reason to hate the song xD back to my point: her voice has been sounding weird since a couple of years now and i don't think it's the production, i think it's her. or her damaged voice let's say. This. I only hear reverb, low pass filter, compression and distortion on the last chorus. There might have been pitch correcting as well, but in the verses in the beginning some of the notes are not hitting the 0.0 tune, which might be indicating that not even pitch corrector was used (at least in the first verse). Singers record various takes of the same song and mixing engineers merge them into the "perfect take" after that, most of the times auto tune is useless. To be honest, I suppose her voice might even be healing from Lyme, it sounds healthier than on HAW already

Maybe I just donβt feel the connection because itβs not really an Avril song.

This is song I guess? First 20 second to me sound like Bitchin summer, 17 and slippin on sunshine, to me it sound like something from AL5 I dont like his voice (MD) to much, probably I will not listen song again, maybe rare, but i will be happy if this is how AL7 will be, and I will maybe love song if only Avril sing Whatever folks' opinion, this song has more character than those three songs, especially "slippin" on sunshine, lol, even if intros might at first glance seem roughly of the same dough. I also agree with the observation some made that he seems to be maybe a bit more powerful, more invested in singing it out than Avril - I'd wish to maybe hear her not only sing out the lyrics, but scream them like she means it and feels it, even if just for a few words, I think it could enrich any song of hers that would contain such an element.

I listened to the song a few more times by now, and I think it's actually quite quickly growing on me after all. I still think Avril's voice is too autotuned (no, I'm not talking about post-Lyme effects, there is definitely something computer-ish / unnatural about her voice, but we all hear differently, so yeah, whatever... ). But I in no way want to imply with this that John Feldmann isn't a good producer. Look at his discography, he's produced some albums with absolute killer / top quality production. Therefore, I'm sure adding this autotune / effect to Avril's voice was a conscious choice. I still don't much like it, though. And I still think the mixing near the ending, when everything is at its loudest, is kinda off. It sounds to me like whoever mixed this song tried to put everything in the foreground, but the result, sadly, is what sounds like quite a bunch of noise; it just doesn't sound very comfortable to my ears. But I really do enjoy Mod Sun's distorted vocals (I'm not talking about that effect near the ending, but about his vocal technique throughout the song). And I'm absolutely in love with how the song transitions from piano/ballad sound to something a bit more rock, to powerful pop-punk drums, and back to this piano sound. These transitions are so smooth; it's like all of a sudden you're like "wait, when did this song become so heavy?" Instrumentally, I especially love the drums. Man, I've been missing this so much on an Avril song (or rather, a song featuring Avril)! I really, really hope she'll add drums like this to AL7 as well. Not necessarily this heavy (though I certainly wouldn't mind ), but I'd definitely love for her to keep live drums and interesting drum patterns with some hi hats and toms here and there. I'm sick of this repetitive, super basic pop percussion.

Well, well, well...I'm on my 3rd listening of the song and it's kinda interesting the direction of the song takes while it develops. The overall production for me is also interesting as you can hear real drums and those riffs are also kinda good for me. First thing is that I thought that I'd be dissapointed for the snippet modsun uploaded yesterday but I really like the song even though it's not one of Avril's best works up to date. At the very beginning it gave me some BURNING.mp3 vibes but as I said before it turns out to be something really different. Not like a ONE OKrock song but almost similar, heavier at some point. Second, lyrics are not that interesting to me...I was also expecting something like Bloody valentine or more pop-rock but it's good. Again, love isn't the topic that I was expecting but well... it seems is the direction modsun's album is taking this time. Avril's vocals are good and those last lines gave me goosebumps, I don't know why. Maybe bc it reminds me to some of the iconics tracks of GL era or some acoustic version of an Avril song, maybe nobody's home? maybe not. I don't have much to say for now until I give it a few more listens but it's not bad...maybe a grower. Maybe with a MV video it could be bigger. At least we can have almost 99% guaranteed that AL7 will have a good production, maybe not a perfect one but a real good one.

I've listened to it 4 times now and I like it more each time. It isn't as instant as Karma, more of a grower to get the rhythm of it. I literally have no idea what anyone's talking about with autotune. There's some distortion right near the end with both their voices but that's for effect. I don't hear anything anywhere else that doesn't just sound like basically everything she records It's mainly noticeable in the opening verse with just Avril singing. Listen carefully to how her voice sounds particularly on the drawn out "youuuuu" and "fire." It's really subtle, but you can tell her voice sounds overly processed there and a bit unnatural, not the way a human voice would sound without that polishing.

I'm sick of this repetitive, super basic pop percussion. The effect you guys are listening is not autotune, but a low-pass filter... it basically cuts some of the frequencies of the lows in the sound, to make the singer sound brighter... This is completely stylistic as Avril has been using it in her vocal mixing since The Best Damn Thing (few of her songs don't have it nowadays: Head Above Water is a rare example of a song without low pass filter, ie), I guess she asks for it when the songs go to post production (mixing/mastering). Even on some TV performances her mic is with a low pass filter... it doesn't fix pitching or anything, but makes the singer's timber sound thinner, younger and higher, she might not like the low harmonies of her voice, or likes the sound of the effect, who knows.

I think that it actually makes sense that Avril isn't full on screaming the lyrics like Mod. First of all, her voice isn't really made to do that anyway. Secondly, I think the song is meant to clearly show 2 sides of a relationship. One side being more angry, the other being more sad I guess. It's about 2 people who are in a toxic relationship or maybe who have broken up, but still have feelings for each other. The girl feels sad about it, while the guy is more angry. It wouldn't make a lot of sense for them both to be screaming in the song, it would just sound the same all the way through. It adds more dimension to have those different perspectives. Not to mention that Avril doesn't really possess the right technique to do that so her vocal performance would really pale in comparison to Mod's.

That's low pass filter, as I said before... Those notes are not even hitting the 0.0 tune, so it's not auto tune. They cut a part of the low frequencies of her voice in mixing, so the notes where those low frequencies were most listeneable are the ones that sound "less human". She seems to be the one who likes this filter, she's been using it for some years in a lot of songs to make them sound brighter/younger.

Around 1:30 the song turns into something soooo crazy. I love that climax The energy in there needs to show up on some AL7 tracks

Interesting interpretation of the message, though I don't feel as much duality/variance as you seem between the two. And I agree, both can't scream, at least not the same way, I personally am only thinking about maybe hearing Avril try being more aggressive in a new album. Can she do it? I think potentially she could, but I'm not sure of course :-)

Itβs great. She was brought in to sing the chorus, she ended up making a record with MGK, Travis Barker etc.
Her voice is like butter. Especially that last 10 seconds. Woof.

You got that interpretation right, I guess this is what they tried to tell with the production and stuff. They could really milk it in the music video, that's a good way to tell the story I just don't understand all the "fake singer" vibe you guys get from Avril with that "that's autotune", "she can't do it", "her live singing sucks". She has one of the healthiest techniques in the pop industry and a long career (only a disease could damage her voice, to prove her technique is great). She could do it, of course. There's a difference between knowing and having the technique to do, and choosing to do, which is an artistic decision on how to approach the way you sing. I mean, she's done the dirty vocals already in the I Don't Have To Try bridge, but that's mid range... it would be higher in this song, but yeah, it would ruin the storytelling and wouldn't fit the song and doesn't fit her clean timber I guess, and with it I agree, and she probably knows it.
