With all of the lyrics mentioned in this thread I don’t find issue at all. With the “like a fat kid on a pack of Smarties” still makes me chuckle. The *only* lyrics that makes me wince is “I’m not nobody’s fool”. Double negatives, ya’ll..... I can’t. Wow, that song is 20 years old and I have never heard "I'm not nobodys fool", I have always heard "I'm nobodys fool" because the "not" is so short. Thanks for destroying that Lol I need to learn to read through threads more thoroughly before I quote and/or reply

"Nobody's Fool" is one of my favorite songs from Let Go, although that lyric has always bugged me. For years I only heard "I'm nobody's fool", until I noticed in the CD booklet that it actually contained the "not". I'm not sure what Avril or Peter Zizzo were thinking, since the song was completely fine without the double negative.

I’m surprised no one noticed she’s always said “not nobody’s fool,” I’ve noticed from the first time I ever listened as far back as the 4th grade lol
It was likely done as a stylistic choice and to make it fit into the music, it’s pretty common for artists to use grammatically incorrect phrases in music just because it sounds good or fits the music. Example: Ariana Grande’s “Break Free” - “I only want to die alive, never by the hands of a broken heart, don’t want to hear you lie tonight, now that I’ve become who I really are” - it should be “who I am” but “are” rhymes more with “heart”
If we’re going to talk about her grammatically incorrect lyrics, the one that’s always driven me nuts is in WYG when she says “The words I need to hear to always get me through the day and make it ok, I miss you.” It’s not a complete sentence or thought. The whole chorus goes:
When you’re gone The pieces of my heart are missing you
When you’re gone The face I came to know is missing too
When you’re gone The words I need to hear to always get me through the day And make it ok... then what?
I miss you
It only makes sense on the final chorus when she says “The words I need to hear WILL always get me through the day and make it ok, I miss you”

The Smile lyrics were really "in-your-face". On EBBY I never noticed that until I had the special edition where it's explicit. I always heard the "not" in Nobody's Fool.

Maybe the words she needs to hear to always get her through the day and make it okay are literally: "I miss you" (coming from the other person ofc), so its like: "The words I need to hear to always get me through the day, and make it ok: 'I miss you'"

The not in Nobody's Fool just blew my mind and I'm still here recovering. So she actually is somebody's fool!? I need answers.
Honestly I cringe at the "rapping" in that song. It doesn't...flow very well IMO. She also predicted the travesty that is 4Real in there. So that's a double negative in a song that now turns out to already have a double negative! And since I just mentioned 4Real: "'Cause I'm for real, are you for real? I can't help myself, it's the way I feel" doesn't bother anyone?
In WYG I hear the "And make it ok" as intentionally pausing the song or feeling like it doesn't cleanly connect to show that something is indeed missing. It works well with the music itself since it slows down to a stop which makes you feel that something is still supposed to be there but it's not and just moves on after she says I miss you. Something that you're expecting to be there isn't. Lyrically something is missing but paired with the way the music flows it feels intentionally "off" to me for effect and her "I miss you" refers to that emptiness.

It feels like she left some space for the listeners for their feelings - she left it hanging in the air so everyone can fill it with their own feelings or memories.

Double negatives can still be negatives, so she isn't anybody's fool, some Southern American dialects do this thing quite regularly (e.g. " I haven't seen no car"), and some languages (like slavic ones) are full of such negative multiples. Usually it means strongly affirming the negative, in this song's case it was also for the sake of keeping lyrics flowing nicely, I think.

Yes I always interpreted the part in WYG as an interruption which was made on purpose. It‘s like you are telling it and stopping before finishing to sigh because you feel the pain. I don’t know if they really thought about it that way when they wrote the lyrics tho.

Another lyric that always drove me nuts in ILY: The reason I love you is all that we’ve been through And that’s why I love you Like you literally just said the reason why you love someone, it’s redundant.
