The UMS ones aren't self-written TBH as to me that is melody and lyrics.
So I voted for IFILWTD. It's one of her best full stop. Very underrated.
Notable mentions to RW, FF and DTLM. Which are next level down but decent.
YASNY & BOAH are interesting cos they are the only self-written songs she has done that are fast and neither have bad melodies. The former though has dreadful production which is a shame.
Goodbye is let down by the terrible lyrics and 4 Real by the really bland verses.
Darlin is 'ok' but is just missing something that makes it good.
SST has the really high pitched vocal and again bad lyrics but melody wise it's not so bad.
I'd probably love her to to do a fully self-written album sometime in the future but only if she really pushed herself lyrically like she did on IFILWTD and worked with a great producer.

I think Av deserves more credit when it comes to melody writing, tbh. Especially when Butch admitted she had the entire chorus of My Happy Ending figured out before hand.
Although her writing in general isn’t super strong, she’s good at catchy melodies, and striking lyrics when she wants to be creative or poetic XD although sometimes they can sound really cheesy XD

I thought all songs of Avril are self-written and that other people change it after finishes to write it.

She usually cowrites. meaning she and a small group of other songwriters/producers write and compose the songs together c: sometimes she starts a song on her own, other times the others have songs started, and they all finish it together. it also seems like occasionally she’s handed songs written by others and just changes up the lyrics to fit her better. The way we know whether a song was self written by her or not is via the booklet credits, and online public music registries where artists copyright their work!!! Also from Avril’s words from interviews and stuff XD |

If anyone votes for Black Star, I need an explanation... I voted for Falling Fast. It's not a personal favourite but I like the lyrics and it actual sounds self-written. Other songs I'm not so sure about. I voted for Black Star because I can't decide between Darlin and Falling Fast  |

To be honest, I didn't realise Nobody's Home was self-written... The fact that it's such a fantastic song and that no other self-written songs even come close... Does make me think there may have been a 'ghost' writer involved?

I would say that after all these years we might be able to recognise how she sounds and what lyrics are typical for her. For example I dont believe she wrote YASNY by herseld as the lyrics and the structure doesnt sound that much like her. |

Nobody's Home. I really hope she works with Ben Moody in the future again (though I don't think it's ever gonna happen) because he's a great composer and lyricist imo. Amy was right about being pissed after losing Ben to Avril lol. I didnt know about the Amy-Ben-Avril thing. What did Amy say then?

Some of you people not being able to separate melody from lyrics makes me really sad. There are many different talents out there and all should be praised for it. A designer doesn't have to be a good painter, the same way a photographer doesn't have to know anything about videography.
I don't understand why writing the lyrics of a song that already has the chords and melodies is somehow "less" of a job and that it doesn't deserve the same credit. Yes... composing the song AND writing the lyrics too is impresive and should be praised too but not Avril writing her best song of her career ON HER OWN and people not taking that seriously lol....
I'm sorry but i really disagree with that type of thinking. As if Celine Dios is less of a vocalist bc she doesn't write her own lyrics or something like that. There's people really talented at composing and other at writing. Considering how weak of a writer Avril is AND what an amazing job she did with NH is just worth praising.
I choose NH obviously. It's probably her saddest song and funny enough the one that can be related to the easiest and be more "personal" and it's not even about her. She did the opposite the only time she wrote a song about someone else LOL.
