I feel like IFILWTD is the best because she was making an effort to sound more poetic and really pushing her boundaries. Falling Fast is also a great self-written one, the “I never knew I needed you, like a sad song needs a sea of lighters” is superb.
I think she’s actually a very good writer, but doesn’t really push herself too much to get better. Same happens with her instrument playing skills. I feel that she reached her peak in UMS and then settled for all the skills she learned. Didn’t get better at guitar, didn’t get better at piano, didn’t get better at lyrics (other than a few exceptions)
I also want to point out that BOAH is actually very well-written and quite clever. She does some great word playing and I’m obsessed with the “I don’t want to feel another rip, another strain, another bruise , another break of a heartache” part. Just because it’s boy-bashing and fast doesn’t take away the fact that it’s one of her best for sure. I feel it’s been a bit overlooked by many, which is a shame.

This is an excellent point and while this thread may not be the ideal place to talk about it . . . what the hell! I think the thing with Avril is that she is very comfortable with being comfortable. She obviously has a natural talent that she has managed to improve upon over the years, to a point. However, she seems to have plateaued out at a level that works for her both creatively and as a revenue stream for her backers. And I really wonder how many people around her actively encourage her to grow or evolve as an artist? All of the twists and turns through her albums after UMS seem to be centred around chasing the Next Big Trend one way or another. And that's not to say that Avril was not onboard for such an approach to her career but it seemed that she was more drifting with the tide rather than following a charted course. She certainly has the potential to develop much much further as an artist but it's hard to see that happening when at the moment she is so in her comfort zone hanging out with "the boys" whom it is doubtful will try and push her to reach higher artistically. Not while they are all raking in the $$$ by letting Avril do what she is comfortable doing. As always, YMMV. |

A toss up between “Remember When” and “Nobody’s Home”. I remember getting a little teary the first time listening to “Remember When” because it felt so personal and imagining how she was feeling watching such a big relationship come to a close so young was heartbreaking, so I’m leaning towards that. The way she sings the second verse especially. But whew it’s hard not to pick those Under My Skin songs 😭😍 That album in general is top tier

This is hard. All the songs listed are great, I especially like those from Under My Skin & Love Sux. But Goodbye Lullaby has a heart of which Avril’s songs are at the centre of. Black Star stands out for its ethereal quality as a possible favourite, but the lack of a full version holds it back. Stop Standing There is lovely & sang fiercely. 4 Real has an air of the older & newer music, able to conjure up feeling in the classic way Avril excels at but seldom quite so perfectly. Darlin is excellent, it puts a smile on my face, the “It’s not your fault” lyric like a comforting hug from a friend, in that way friends do not always actually provide but music can! Remember When, hits a spot, in a terribly sad but uplifting way. Goodbye, whilst perhaps the simplest lyrically, has the most heart with the passionate…

I love you so” It is between 4 Real & Goodbye, this is very close indeed for me, but it is Goodbye, quite simply the harmony. Great topic, it makes one realise how Avril’s songs are some of my favourites overall. |

Avril Lavigne is far more talented than the average popstar today and certainly has improved at doing interviews,talking with more confidence,vocal ability overall,her songwriting is good too,she also started playing the drums,which many popstars don't do and during the downtime she had while fighting Lyme Disease,she learned to play the rhythm guitar. I think she's good at doing everything,including playing the guitar and other instruments. |

I always forget which songs she writes on her own and it always surprises me that NH is on the list. That one and FF are really good. Voted for NH. Omg I was listening to "Falling Fast" earlier today on the train and I had forgotten how beautiful and pure she sounds on it. I voted "Remember When" because , like FF, it also feels very vulnerable and true. You can really hear when an artist has lived in and deeply feels the words they're singing and I'm so glad she writes and shares that with us |
